The shit show began with the useful idiot David Cameron’s fear of the ultra libertarians

Great article below. Our issues today are a direct result of the Brexit vote. In June 2016 the UK approached the fork in the road and chose to walk down fantasy lane. We cannot damage trade with our closest neighbours and expect to become richer. True sovereignty does not exist as economies are inter-dependent.

Whoever replaces Liz, needs to improve our relationship with the EU. We need realists, grownups and experts back in charge. We also need to be humble and realise we’re not special.

I disagree - our issues today are to do with the 2008 banking crash - since maggie T the UK depended on the financial system to pay our taxes and thereby run the country - they collapsed and then, worse still, our tax money baled them out. So we had austerity - and more austerity and we're in for more austerity.

Ok then it was still David Cameron’s poor decision making but earlier. Austerity was due to ideology. It was never necessary, they just wanted to shrink the state and used 2008 as their cover.

When everything inevitably went to shit and people saw less public services, the Tory’s deflected blame on to the EU. Then held their reckless referendum.

yep we never recovered from the 08 & Thatcher encouraged the practice of prioritising shareholders above all else.

David Cameron also signed the agreemet with Alex Salmond to hold the Scottish Referendum. If independence had won he probably would have been cautious about holding the Brexit vote.

We went from being the fastest growing G7 economy in 2015 to the slowest in the G20 in 2022.

You are spot on OP.

I know most brexiters just do not seem to or want to understand but all of this debacle is directly the outcome of the catastrophic decision to leave the EU. The sheer diabolical nature of the vote, the flagrant lies and the relented BS about “we can do deals with other countries around the world” has fuelled the political turmoil and paralysis that has come to pass. Liz Truss is just the end result of a group of people misleading their way to power.

Before Brexiters try to blame the 2008 crisis or Thatcherism- just remember you voted for this crisis we are now in. I am afraid you were all clearly warned this would happen but nobody wanted to listen to “experts “

Also warned Brexit would risk break up of UK by accelerating Scottish nationalism and jeopardising the peace process in Northern Ireland but they didn't care. Brexit at any cost

Yes, was just having this conversation with DH last night. Cameron fucked it, everything that’s come since has stemmed from that. If there had been no referendum, with covid and all the other shit that’s been going on over the last few years I don’t believe many apart from the lunatic fringes of the Conservative party would even have still seen Europe as a significant issue. Most people didn’t care about it before and they wouldn’t care about it afterwards.

Cameron agreed to Brexit to save his own skin.
Johnson won his majority on a Brexit mandate, he campaigned for Brexit because he made a calculated decision that it would make him more popular.
Austerity was popular with the Tories ideology and neatly hurts the "undeserving" poor the most.
Sadly people are deliberately misled by so much of the media who have an agenda laid out by the richest in society.

Agree it began with the act of economic self-harm in June 2016. Then the mental illness of choosing Mr Johnson as Prime Minister by the Tories, a man who turned out by his inactions and actions to lead to more deaths in the UK than Hitler's bombs in the blitz.

The Conservative party have prioritised their party's interests over the country's best interests. The EU referendum was designed to stop the haemorrhaging of Tory votes to UKIP.

However, Boris made things worse by deselecting any MPs who didn't agree with him.

We need a governing party that embraces talent, diversity and different ideas, not one full of yes wo/men.

Nicked from Twitter:

John Major called them “swivel-eyed loons”, David Cameron gave them a referendum, Boris Johnson put them in his cabinet and now we have one as PM. Progress, huh?

One thing that is apparent - and I don't know whether this is a modern or even recent modern phenomena is the way that politicians flip flop between viewpoints or I guess lack any genuine conviction. Johnson jumped on the Brexit bandwagon to boost his career and Truss has seen all her apparent deeply held policy beliefs pulled out from underneath her and yet, she'll not leave her position willingly.

BTW did you mean to call Cameron a "useful idiot" in your thread title?

In what way was he useful? Unless you mean useful in the sense that he was a bit of a tool

At some point, you have to stop blaming governments and begin blaming yourselves - the people, the electorate. voting these liars and incompetents in. England, Wales, and NI gave the Tories a majority after all newspapers articles, tv programs and endless discussions in social media reminding people about their Brexit lies.

Even now, most people voting Tory refuse to take responsibility for their vote. There is always an excuse/justification for that vote, except accepting they made a serious mistake.

Brexit is over, finished and the UK is on its own. Hopefully next time the UK electorate vote a government, they will take responsibility who they vote for and their policies, instead of looking for escape goats if the people elected end up being a bunch of incompetents.

well you can only vote for whoever stands.
I suspect much of our problem , which is worse imv than the rest of Europe, is the newspapers and media - we had evil phone hacking journos in the 90s and 000s and now we have evil medias based in the English speaking US whose job it is to wind us up. Lie and manipulate votes.
what decent sensible person would choose to stand for election, very few and I don’t blame them.
Evenvtheir lives are at risk now.

Brexit is a done deal, ...... “So let me be very clear: with Labour, Britain will not go back into the EU. We will not be joining the single market. We will not be joining a customs union.” Keir Starmer !.
