To ask when you dress up / make an effort?

Lockdown turned me into a bit of a slob in terms of wearing gym type clothes (although not working out), no make up and wearing my hair up in a bun.

We are long out of lockdown now and I haven't quite ditched these habits.

When do you dress up / make more of an effort with your hair and make up?

Is it every time you leave the house?
Every time you meet people?
Only when working in the office?

It's like I've forgotten how to present myself!

I also find sometimes I'll put a dress on and do my make up for the most mundane of weekend tasks just because I've been quite slobby all week. So one extreme to the other.

Tell me about how you balance this out?

I don’t. I put a bit of make up on every morning so as not to scare people, but I don’t go anywhere to get dressed up. I like to have a shower after tea and get into PJ’s.

lannistunut · 09/10/2022 07:10

I only dress up if I want to, so if you're happy in what you're wearing now I'd go with it.

Not bothering much about appearance is liberating and saves both time and money. I doubt you look like a 'slob'.

petpig · 09/10/2022 07:13

casual when wfh and wear a little bit of makeup every day (I need it) and dress up when I go to the office. The only time I don't bother with anything is when I'm working on my allotment.

HotDogJumpingFrogHaveACookie · 09/10/2022 07:14

I dress smarter when I go to the office. When I'm at home I wear gym wear as I usually work out at some point during the day.

I only get properly dressed up with hair and make up done if I'm going out out.

Hearthnhome · 09/10/2022 07:17

It comes in waves for me. I always put on a bit of make up and a nice dress for the office. I don’t generally tend to wear comfy clothes when wfh. Blanket hoodies are my favourite at the moment.

But then I will go through phases where I enjoy putting make up on to be at home. Then through phases where I don’t. Same with my hair, I go through phases where my hair gets done every morning. The phases where I just brush it. I am growing out my grey hair and stopped dying it, so I tend to try and make it look styled at the moment just because hair with 3 inches of grey hair and just hanging there tends to make me look like I have given up on myself. 😂

I am not a big fan of dressing up for nights out. It’s a very occasional thing. I am currently trying to work out if I can get away with jeans and nice top for one of Christmas nights out.

BertieBotts · 09/10/2022 07:19

I don't work in an office and I got a bit of a jolt recently when I was about to go out to a formal (ish) event without bothering to do anything except brush my hair Grin and I realised other people were making an effort so I bought a new top and wore that with jeans.

Since then I've made a bit of an effort if I go out in the evening. But jeans/nicer top than normal is my version of dressing up - day to day I'm wearing gym pants and Primark Blush

Roselilly36 · 09/10/2022 07:21

I actively avoid situations when I need to dress up, so bored of that now.

GingerPigz · 09/10/2022 07:30

Ooh! This has really got me thinking... I stopped making an effort a while ago (I noticed that no one else at work wore make up or 'did' their hair - and all still look totally presentable) and still find it quite liberating - but now I am thinking maybe I should push the boat out occasionally? But weekends are generally spent walking the dog and doing chores at home so... Nah! Only if I go out of an evening - which rarely happens (and that suits me fine!)

ldontWanna · 09/10/2022 07:34

Only when I go on a night out some other special occasion.

MysweetAudrina · 09/10/2022 07:36

Sweaty Betty 80% of the time. Def make an effort clothes wise going into office. Never bother with make up but do keep my brows waxed and tinted and have a v good daily skincare regime. Haven't worn jeans in a long time, find them really uncomfortable now. If going out, I get a blow dry and wear something with a bit of boobage.

waterlego · 09/10/2022 07:38

Only if I’m going out for dinner or to a social event.

The rest of the time, I only have three modes of dress: gym kit, scruffy dog walking clothes, PJs.

PaperPalace · 09/10/2022 07:42

I'm not into make up and hardly ever wear it - just a few times a year for a big night out.

I wear casual clothes if I'm wfh or at the weekend, but by casual, I mean jeans rather than joggers. I only wear joggers / leggings to exercise in. I could wear jeans to work too, lots of my colleagues do, but I choose a smart casual look - a nice pair of trousers and a top, occasionally a skirt.

Malfi · 09/10/2022 07:43

I rarely wear make-up, but I don’t think that means that I don’t make an effort. I suppose I might put on some mascara and eyeshadow perhaps. I don’t really style or do my hair either. Making an effort, to me, means nice clothes, not jeans and a hoody. I try most days, otherwise I’d just be wearing the same old stuff.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 09/10/2022 07:45

Im content with my face so I don't feel the need to wear make up daily but I really enjoy putting on a bit, and a dress and tights for a date night with DH. We have a disabled child so we don't get out ever but we get nice food in and have lounge dates. The only person I care about thinking I look nice is him really.

I'm going away with my sister and brother this month and I think I'll enjoy getting a bit more dolled up for that as it's a rarity.

If I'm going to the office I might wear a bb cream and a nice lipstick but nowhere near how dressy I used to be

georgarina · 09/10/2022 07:53

I make a basic bit of effort when I leave the house in the morning. It just makes me feel so much better even when I don't 'need' to.

Fairislefandango · 09/10/2022 08:02

I always wear make-up, even if I'm not leaving the house. Mostly just BB cream,a bit of blusher and concealer. As for clothes - I am in work every day and dress code is pretty much smart casual, so I never really dress up as such, but neither am I ever in jeans, jogging pants etc.

Essentially I am almost always the same level of make-up and clothes regardless of where I'm going (except I often wear jeans at the weekend, but not slobby)! There's not a massive difference between my weekend wardrobe and my work wardrobe.

RIPQueen · 09/10/2022 08:07

It looks like I’m making an effort every day but those are just my clothes! I don’t own very causal style clothes that can be worn out of the house. As I’ve said on another thread I do very low key maintenance things once every few weeks like eyebrow tinting and eyelashes that mean my daily effort is just tinted moisturiser but it looks like I do more than that. If I am going out somewhere properly eg dinner then I will make an effort with heels and make up - I seldom get the chance so it’s a big deal

pictish · 09/10/2022 08:08

Rarely. I make sure my hair looks good (to my eye) every day and always wear mascara but truly, I’m either in practical work garb, outdoor kit for running, cycling, hiking, or jeans and a jumper round the house. The occasions I wear something a bit more dressy or put on a full face of make up are few and far between. I enjoy it when I bother to do it but it’s not required for my day to day life.
I do like to dress well in general.

goldfinchonthelawn · 09/10/2022 08:14

I almost always bother with a bit of make up before leaving the house, even if I am just going for a workout, as I am pale and wear glasses that make my eyes look smaller so without makeup I look quite old and tired and plain.

I made an effort on Friday to meet friends in town and another yesterday to go to a matinee with an old friend.

I make a bit of effort for work Zoom calls. Almost never go to dinner paerties or parties any more - about half a dozen times a year, if that, but would make some effort for those.

Zippedydoo123 · 09/10/2022 08:15

Every morning I do primer foundation powder blusher and eyebrow pencil. I add lipstick when going out even just to the shops.r

The only time I don't do make up is in the height of summer but I still wear eyebrow pencil and lipstick.

easylikeasundaymorning · 09/10/2022 08:17

Pretty much every day as regards hair and make up. I wear a full face of makeup including lashes no matter what I'm doing and get my nails done every 3 weeks.

If I'm working from home I'll tend to wear gym stuff as I go to the gym in the evening. Office days I'm smarter but it's a very casual dress code where I work so even then it's not very dressy which means I like dressing up a bit on my days off especially for things like going out for dinner/shopping/drinks etc

For a night out I go all out but it's something I enjoy doing as well so don't find it a chore.

Everydaywheniwakeup · 09/10/2022 08:18

Practically never. My casual is very casual, so I do dress less casualty for work, although still jeans and trainers. I live in a place where people rarely dress up to go to restaurants unless they are the more formal or high end, so that rarely happens. I guess interviews is the only time I really dress formally.

NancyJoan · 09/10/2022 08:19

If I’m just staying home all day, I don’t both with make-up, but think about what I’m wearing every day. Only wear gym stuff for a class, don’t ever wear jeans. I enjoy putting outfits together, though, don’t find it a chore.

Fridaysgirl17 · 09/10/2022 08:19

The last time I made an effort was my son's first day of school, just looked out together very light makeup, jeans etc but on a daily basis it's comfy clothes, hair up,no makeup, I look presentable,we walk to & from school which is a 35/40 minute walk so I like to be comfortable & warm as I have my 5 year old & 2 year old in his pushchair. If I was going out I put on makeup,do my hair (though I usually end up popping it up) & dress up a little more but I am a jeans & nice top kinda gal,a dress occasionally 🤷🏻‍♀️

QuizzlyBears · 09/10/2022 08:22

I wear a full face of make up for work, office is smart casual so never gym pants/hoodies. If I am working from home I tend to do leggings/yoga pants and loose sweaters or cardigans, still with make up because there are a lot of video calls. I always make some sort of effort unless I’m feeling unwell, even just on a Sunday housework day or whatever. I like to make an effort for my partner and it also does a lot for my headspace to feel put together, my nails and lashes are always done and those small things can impact on how slobby I feel or not.
