To ask when you dress up / make an effort?

Lockdown turned me into a bit of a slob in terms of wearing gym type clothes (although not working out), no make up and wearing my hair up in a bun.

We are long out of lockdown now and I haven't quite ditched these habits.

When do you dress up / make more of an effort with your hair and make up?

Is it every time you leave the house?
Every time you meet people?
Only when working in the office?

It's like I've forgotten how to present myself!

I also find sometimes I'll put a dress on and do my make up for the most mundane of weekend tasks just because I've been quite slobby all week. So one extreme to the other.

Tell me about how you balance this out?

I think its sad people are so obsessed with appearance

🤷‍♀️

I will also add that I think clothes and getting dressed etc is related to self image in an important way for the majority of people. My husband and many of my friend’s husbands seemed to get quite depressed when not putting a suit on every day to go to the office. DH didnt bother and dressing in slobby clothes and felt shit About himself. I made a point of getting dressed properly every day in lockdown and avoided feeling like that.

I don’t see clothes as being about appearance in a shallow way, I think they run deeper and it’s more about personal pride.

it is not the same as looks. Not everyone in this world can be beautiful. Everyone has the ability to present themselves well and dress beautifully though.

@RIPQueen

Meh.

I think the idea that everyone needs to be beautifully presented is damaging

Each to their own. I don’t really care what other people do/everyone should do what they want. I personally like to present at my best and it makes me feel good 😊 as long as people don’t smell, the rest is up to them

I prioritise both comfort and style -- I don't think they're opposed, and as I don't drive and walk and cycle everywhere, things need to be practical and allow me to move fast, often while carrying a lot of stuff. But I don't think that needs to mean I don't also enjoy clothes on a daily basis. I'm an academic, so pretty much anything goes. This time of the year, I wear a lot of expensive knitwear (I can't find a jpeg, but Jura from The Knotty Ones), slouchy trousers or 7/8ths ones and biker boots or DMs, and I have some good parkas and jackets from OSKA, Margaret Howell etc, also this coat from Max Mara. I do wear make-up and have a good hair colour.

Maybe once a month when we go out for a meal. I'm a dog-walker so I wear leggings and practical clothing with lots of pockets for work - make-up and nice hair is utterly pointless when you spend your days covered in dog hair, mud and sweat Grin

My main hobby is horse-riding, so again, I dress for practicality and comfort. My hair is hidden by a riding hat and I always finish a ride sweaty, so make-up would be a total waste of time.

I think I've worn make-up less than a handful of times all year.

I have a horse and I have to say that a good pair of jodhpurs with riding boots is one of the most flattering and beautiful combinations there is 😃

That part of me might look good, but helmet hair is another matter entirely Grin

I make an effort re hair, make up, nails most days. Relatively smart clothes for days in the office - workwear, heels etc. When WFH I favour ‘news reader chic’, lol where only my top half is smart, I probably have leggings and socks on bottom half (lots of Teams meetings!) Weekends I slob out with leggings, hair in a pony tail, etc, but probably still a bit of mascara and lippie when taking the dog out.

I never went the "gym/pj/leisure wear" routine at home so I mainly live in jeans, jeggings and normal tops I can either dress up or down.

At work I do dress up a bit in a way that it's not jeans but smarter trousers or skirts and "proper" shoes, not trainers.

When we go out I dress like I do for the office unless it's just for a pint in the pub, then I stay in jeans.

I have a pixie cut and prefer a bit of tinted moisturiser and mascara over a full face.

neverbeenskiing · 09/10/2022 15:06

I have to look professional for work, but I also feel more confident if I look good so will pay attention to my clothes, hair and make-up. I like to make an effort when I go out but I usually do my hair and put on a bit of mascara, do my brows and a bit of blush even if I'm not leaving the house, because it makes me feel good. During lockdown many of my friends were always in pyjamas/loungewear which is fine but I got dressed and did my make up every day because it made me feel more 'normal' at a time when nothing was normal I suppose.

InsomniacVampire · 09/10/2022 15:39

Makeup to work every day, also I am making a bit of an effort with getting dressed when I go to work, more so when I go out somewhere. Love dressing up!

brianixon · 09/10/2022 17:56

I get more annoyed by lack of colour; I saw a nice long cardigan sort of thing.
"Would sir like black or grey"?
Duh!

It is wrong to think people who care less about appearance have no pride, I personally just take pride in different things. Appearance is not something I feel pride about whether I've made an effort or not.
