Needing help/advice.
Can anyone advise if this is rat/mouse poison that I have just found in my back garden.
Back garden is secure and I have a dog so scared in case dog has eaten some of it.
It is smooth to touch with like a waxy feel to it.

Obviously can't say for sure but any mouse or rat poison I've ever seen is blue in colour.

Blix · 02/10/2022 14:38

Yes it is. I'm 99% sure from that picture.
You can get different kinds of bait. The blue seed type or the block type which is pink.
It should only be used fixed to a metal thread in a rat box.

OldTinHat · 02/10/2022 14:39

I've only seen blue pellets or blocks.

IrisVersicolor · 02/10/2022 14:39

It could well be. Does the dog have any symptoms?

iekanda · 02/10/2022 14:39

It does look like images you can find if you google "red rat mouse poison"

MarmiteCoriander · 02/10/2022 14:41

Do you think a neighbour would have thrown it over to poison the dog? I assume a bird might have picked it up and dropped whilst flying over? Is it just 1 bit?

Blix · 02/10/2022 14:43

I have some just like that in my garage.
It doesn't look like a dog has chewed it. I would ring vet for advice.

EgonsShell · 02/10/2022 14:43

Yes it is, I'm 100% sure because we had to get the rat-catcher in years ago and this is what they used. It's super-strength too. They come in boxes of cubes, quite waxy.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 02/10/2022 14:45

How many pieces are there?

if you can only find that one I'd assume a bird has dropped it.

Fitbachick · 02/10/2022 14:50

More than one bit.

Fitbachick · 02/10/2022 14:52

Yes i do think someone has deliberately put it there.
Does anyone know what symptoms to look for with my dog?

I had red one..does it smell... Deliciously like sweet? Because then it 100% is rat poison I had

MrsMorton · 02/10/2022 14:55

Defo rat poison. I have just filled some bait boxes with precisely that colour of blocks.

Don't stress too much about your dog OP, effects are cumulative so if it's a new appearance in your garden, dog is unlikely to have eaten enough to affect them.

We used to get our dogs throw up when they eat something dodgy.
If I remember correctly it was mustard with water.

I am normally pretty chilled but rat poison is bad and highly dangerous so maybe a call to vet would be the best

Fitbachick · 02/10/2022 14:56

Dog had the runs yesterday, has hardly eaten and had blood in his poo today

OP posts:
EgonsShell · 02/10/2022 14:57

If you do think they might have chewed it just to be safe I would take to vet because there's anticoagulant in the poison which affects the internal organs of rodents, so I would imagine similar in other animals. So look out for blood in poo or in their puke (I'm not fully certain though but best to get some vet advice anyway).

WeAllHaveWings · 02/10/2022 14:59

Emergency vet now!

I would see the vet. Rest poison thins the blood so that the smallest knock causes internal bleeding. Take the block and the dog to the emergency vet. Hope he is better soon

You should have been in the vets already then

Newfluff · 02/10/2022 15:00

*rat poison

OnlyaMummy · 02/10/2022 15:02

This matches exactly (colour shape and size) some rat potion blocks purchased from toolstation or screw fix early this year.

HappyHamsters · 02/10/2022 15:04

Hope doggy is ok and you have taken him to the vet

Ihatethenewlook · 02/10/2022 15:05

That’s the exact kind of rat poison a neighbour used to deliberately poison my dog. I phoned an emergency vet who said I had a two hour window to get him in before it’s too late. It causes their insides to bleed. My dog had an injection to make him vomit and then liquid charcoal every day for a week. I was at the vets within 15 minutes of actually catching him eating it and he was fine

Swansridinghorses · 02/10/2022 15:05

Do not wait to look for symptoms. You need to find out what type of poison because some can take weeks to have effects and can be fatal (cause bleeding problems). I’d make the dog vomit (at the vet) to see if there is anything that comes up and you can discuss with them if it’s worth starting vitamin K treatment. Some are as long as 5 weeks as far as I know but you need to get this identified.
