Want to scream - online supermarket payment

Pillowqueen · 01/10/2022 07:23

I'm about to lose it.

Tried to pay for my online shop with sainsbury's. Said they didn't recognise my card details. Tried credit card. Same thing. Tried instead with Asda. Sane thing again.

Rang TSB. They said it was a problem with the 3D security that Sainsbury's and Asda were now using. They couldn't override this apparently. It was down to the supermarket so ring them. Rang them. They say I just need to speak to my bank.

Both said just use another payment method. I don't have another fucking payment method! And need my shopping!

I'm literally speaking to idiots. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Not one for today obviously, but you really need more than one way of paying. This sort of thing happens a lot (especially with TSB!) so it’s slight madness not to have an alternative.

memorial · 01/10/2022 07:25

This happened to me. You have to delete all cookies, clear you caches and restart your phone/computer

CeeceeBloomingdale · 01/10/2022 07:28

Why are people idiots just bacause your card isn't going through? Is it failing as you don't know your security information? Do they accept PayPal, Google pay or apple pay?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 01/10/2022 07:29

Do you have a prepayment card like Revolut that you use for travel that you can top up and use instead?

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 01/10/2022 07:32

I had this when they brought in the new security measures a few months back. I'm trying to remember but I think it's like a pp said about clearing caches on your phone or cookies on the pc.

Pillowqueen · 01/10/2022 07:33

@memorial that's really helpful thank you. I need to rush out now but will absolutely try this as soon as I get back thank you so much

@ CeeceeBloomingdale because they weren't listening or understanding and just kept repeating the things I'd already tried.

I totally understand the need for additional sources of payment but who has multiple accounts and cards to use in a situation like this other than a debit and credit card??

She tried two payment types.

Lolacat1234 · 01/10/2022 07:37

How many different accounts and cards should she have - she said she tried 3! I don't have much more than that, current, joint and credit card! And a PayPal but I don't think supermarkets take PayPal.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 01/10/2022 07:39

I don't consider them idiots. Supermarket call handlers have no idea if you have money in you bank account and they are not going to lift security measures as they are there for a reason. The bank should offer more practical help but please think before labelling people when it sounds like the problem was actually your end.

GingerPigz · 01/10/2022 07:40

I had this with Ocado a while back - neither Mastercard or Ocado would take responsibility for it. Eventually discovered that it seemed to be an issue when using the app and that I was able to complete my shopping when using the computer. Eventually the app sorted itself out - just a thought if you are using your phone to shop, have you updated your phone recently? Also, sometimes deleting and reinstalling the app helps.

The OP tried debit and credit card. Isn’t that what most people have, or are she and I really behind the times and everyone else has multiple bank accounts/cards?

You should have your credit card and debit card with different banks. Also have one Mastercard and one Visa. That way if one company goes down, you're not totally up shit creek.

A lot of websites nowadays also accept logging in through Apple pay, Google pay, PayPal and Amazon. So you don't need to keep re-entering your card details everywhere.

Ocado accepts PayPal.

I'm literally speaking to idiots wow bit harsh. I get that you want to buy something from them but they are in a call centre doing what they have been trained to do. Are you expecting them to redesign the website right now? Or to give you your shopping for free. I understand it is frustrating though and hope you find a way to get food. Do you have a neighbour who could go to the shop for you? Or if deliveroo are in your area some local shops use them.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 01/10/2022 07:47

Yep happened to me, as a Pp said i cleared my cache and cookies and restarted my apps. V annoying!

WhereIsThisGoing · 01/10/2022 08:05

I've had this issue with Sainsbury's using Google Chrome. The only thing that eventually worked for me was switching Browser (use Edge or Safari etc).

I think the idiot here is the person with only one payment source! I mean who would be that ridiculous?

TimetoNCagain · 01/10/2022 08:20

Make sure that your bank and credit card company have your correct mobile number, email address and memorable name saved. I'm going through this at the moment with my credit card, Worldpay who manage all credit/debit web transactions recently beefed up two stage verification and so cards won't work online without the right info on the system to send verification codes to. If you have a credit card through your bank, the right info needs to be saved by both systems and match.

It will will involve some long phone calls sorting this out, I had to persist until someone figured out what the problem was.

ShirleyPhallus · 01/10/2022 08:23

I had this OP and it’s really frustrating. It is also so annoying to see people finding reasons to blame the OP for something not her fault. No idea why people are blaming her for forgetting security info when she hasn’t said that or expecting someone to have multiple payment options!

Try the log out / clear cache /log in option OP.

I'm not blaming her for the card, but if she's going to call people idiots then I'll point out her idiotic errors.

Pillowqueen · 01/10/2022 08:28

Thanks so much everyone for your advice on how to rectify. I'll try when I get home.

Apologies for offending anyone with my use of the word idiot. It's just so infuriating when you're trying your best to explain something and the other person is just repeating back things that you've already told them that you've tried/haven't worked and you're just going round in circles!

Yes, this is my set up though I actually have a number of £0 balance CCs I can use

I also have two current accounts as I opened a Chase one this year which I use for card spending due to the cashback, and have another my salary goes into and DDs out of.

girlmom21 · 01/10/2022 08:29

Considering the OP explains the two payment sources she tried, I think you win that aware. Congrats Star

girlmom21 · 01/10/2022 08:30

FFS, *award.

Can I share it? Grin

Skyeheather · 01/10/2022 08:48

Can you try ordering from a different supermarket to see if your card works there?

Is there an option to pay with PayPal?
