To be honest, I never really did this before covid and I still tend to do it but I feel a bit odd doing it as nobody else seems to do it!

I’m not the only who touches my computer do, multiple people do so goodness knows what germs it would be lingered with!

every morning or after someone else has touched it, I always give it a wipe with a disinfectant wipe.

YABU - you must have OCD
YANBU - you are right to do that, It’s just good hygiene

Covid is still rife, & winter is coming with germ soup.. carry on cleaning!

skgnome · 26/09/2022 16:48

Personally I don’t do it, unless it looks greasy
but I do tend to do it after I used the PC - since I’m very mindful of the fact that I use a lot of hand creams and I maybe leaving some unwanted residue
sometimes I do it if I see someone else doing it
i don’t think anyone will judge you

vodkaredbullgirl · 26/09/2022 16:48

Gets a wipe over at the end of the day, but we all wash our hands lots of time (care home)

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 26/09/2022 16:50

Given how few people wash their hands, you are being very sensible. Might be worth occasionally turning your keyboard upside down and giving it a good slap to see if you dislodge any other gunk.

Starsinyoureyes13 · 26/09/2022 16:52

Yanbu, keyboards are full of germs, the hand to mouth then to things is the cause of many bugs, the winter vomiting bug, flus, colds and covid...

Poppyseed14 · 26/09/2022 16:53

Keyboards are absolutely minging OP. Never mind covid but think of someone going to the loo and not washing their hands and then touching your keyboard. I'd also be giving my desk a wipe and if your chair has arm rests I'd give them a going over too.

KimWexlersPonyTail · 26/09/2022 16:54

Always did this before covid, including the desk, they are filthy and never get properly cleaned. Always cleaned shopping trolley handles also.

The trouble with that theory is that Covid is not spread by touch. It is spread by inhaling the aerosol of droplets someone else has breathed out. The excess use of wipes which go to landfill is a major problem, however. If you really do feel that you need to disinfect the mouse and keyboard, how about using a disinfectant spray on a tissue?

StillNotWarm · 26/09/2022 16:55

Fine to do, but use one designed for electronics. Normal wipes are too wet and mess up the keyboard according to our IT guy.

PorkPieAndAPickledOnion · 26/09/2022 16:55

I’m not based in the office so I hot-desk when I go in. I’ve always done the cleaning wipe over everything with a Clinell wipe, for years and years. I’m not knowingly going to give a home to someone else’s germs! I’ve not had a stomach bug since 1975. We are actively encouraged to do it now everyone is hybrid and hot-desking - the stuff is left out on every workstation.

Campervangirl · 26/09/2022 16:57

Yep, I do it and I'm the only one who touches my keyboard.
I'm touching surfaces other people have touched throughout the day then using my keyboard, maybe touching my face.
Covid hasn't made me paranoid but it's made me think differently

JudithHarper · 26/09/2022 17:01

I wouldn't waste your time. Plenty of people clean their keyboards, mice etc, just in case someone has touched them but nobody thinks twice about grabbing the kettle in the staff room that nobody has cleaned in years.

Saucery · 26/09/2022 17:03

I’ve always done it. I also wipe the handle of the kettle and the door of the fridge at work. Norovirus and other assorted nasties have long haunted school equipment!

HandlebarLadyTash · 26/09/2022 17:05

I used to do mine regularly before covid and anytime I hotdesk I give the whole desk and keyboard a good clean. I find greasy keyboard with crumbs in completely gross

bridgetreilly · 26/09/2022 17:08

I don’t think it will help against Covid, but it will certainly help prevent other things so I would do it.

TabithaTittlemouse · 26/09/2022 17:10

OCD is about more than wiping your keyboard down. Hmm

Everyone where I work (NHS) regularly wipes down our keyboards etc. Not just since covid.

REP22 · 26/09/2022 17:14

It doesn't sound OCD-like to me, it sounds sensible. Covid is still about, winter is coming with a higher risk of colds and other nasties, and you know that other people use your keyboard (and not everyone washes their hands after going to the loo). It's a wise precaution to take.

OfficiallyBroken · 26/09/2022 18:02

Pre-covid I did this prior to having my own laptop. People as a rule are gross (leaving aside germs, there's food grease and hand cream residue that make sharing undesirable). Making sure that something I had 9 hours of contact with a day wasn't harbouring someone else's debris just seemed like common sense.

Also did it with the desk phone and desk surface.

FelicityFlops · 26/09/2022 18:06

We all did this years before CoVid, if hot desking. Only sensible.

Lulu1919 · 26/09/2022 18:13

I would
Never mind covid...flu and germs everywhere!!!!

shinynewapple22 · 26/09/2022 18:14

Of course you should wipe down any shared surfaces in your office. Particularly if you share phones . It's not just Covid - think of cold, flu,
Norovirus etc

drpet49 · 26/09/2022 18:14

I’ve always done it, even pre covid

Darbs76 · 26/09/2022 18:14

I did for a while, but to be honest I’ve given up everything bar hand washing now, so any desk cleaning is long gone. Some people still do it, no-one thinks they are crazy, they probably think they should do the same but forget or can’t be bothered but nothing crazy about doing it

Chdjdn · 26/09/2022 18:19

I do this; when I changed to a hot desking environment I got more colds etc so now I do

Oblomov22 · 26/09/2022 18:22

I disagree with all of this. "I’ve not had a stomach bug since 1975. We are actively encouraged to do it now..,". Yeah, I've never done it, and I've never had a stomach bug, ever. All this health anxiety and paranoia is not good worse for your health than any germs. Germs are normal.
