To be honest, I never really did this before covid and I still tend to do it but I feel a bit odd doing it as nobody else seems to do it!

I’m not the only who touches my computer do, multiple people do so goodness knows what germs it would be lingered with!

every morning or after someone else has touched it, I always give it a wipe with a disinfectant wipe.

YABU - you must have OCD
YANBU - you are right to do that, It’s just good hygiene

Of course you should wipe down any shared surfaces in your office. Particularly if you share phones . It's not just Covid - think of cold, flu,
Norovirus etc

57 never wiped down never had any of those illnesses!

I disagree with all of this. "I’ve not had a stomach bug since 1975. We are actively encouraged to do it now..,". Yeah, I've never done it, and I've never had a stomach bug, ever. All this health anxiety and paranoia is not good worse for your health than any germs. Germs are normal.

Snap!

We've been hot desking for about 10 years and have always had to wipe down the desk and keyboard at the end of each day. It's one of the office rules.

MissMaple82 · 26/09/2022 19:06

My local college has wipes at every comp, and you are to wipe down after each use.

BEAM123 · 26/09/2022 19:11

YANBU

I did this even before Covid and also clean my own keyboard, that nobody else touches, weekly.

DeadBod · 26/09/2022 19:12

I've always cleaned my keyboard, mouse, telephone, desk and chair arms. My workplace supply the cleaning stuff as we hot desk.

Oliverfunyuns · 26/09/2022 19:16

If I had to share a computer, I'd probably do it, too. There are people who proudly state they never wash their hands, and even those who do rarely do it often or thoroughly enough. If it makes you feel even a bit safer and cleaner, why not?

FlorettaB · 26/09/2022 19:20

Lots of people don’t wash their hands after using the toilet. There will be faecal bacteria on the keyboard. Why not wipe it down?

justasking111 · 26/09/2022 19:27

We have a health and safety officer who visits each location. He ensures we have the right lighting wrist rests foot rests and making sure we wipe phones, keyboards. The cleaners if there's an outbreak of norovirus do a double deep clean Which they taught me

Fizzgigg · 26/09/2022 19:29

I do it but mostly because people in our office seem to love snacking on nuts and I'm allergic to them so I wipe down desks and keyboards just in case.

Vinylloving · 26/09/2022 19:30

Of course not unreasonable

TeachesOfPeaches · 26/09/2022 19:33

I got conjunctivitis when I started a new computer based job. I didn't clean it before I used it.

purplecorkheart · 26/09/2022 19:35

I do and did long before Covid. I wipe my keyboard, monitor, phone and desk surface every evening. More to keep things tidy rather than germs. I do tend to wash my hands after using the buildings kitchen. There are a couple of people working in the building who leave a grim build up from their hands

mondaytosunday · 26/09/2022 19:37

God yes - even my home keyboard gets nasty. Wipe away!

Lochjeda · 26/09/2022 19:37

We have to do it along with the desk at the beginning and end of every shift as part of our covid policy so you are not being unreasonable.

Hbh17 · 26/09/2022 19:38

It is truly astonishing that - after 2.5 years - people still believe you can catch Covid from surfaces. It's an airborne infection, folks! All this ludicrous cleaning and sanitising does more harm than good.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/09/2022 19:40

I don't know why you need to ask. I've always done it - even before computers or wet wipes when I used a typewriter I cleaned it

EmmaH2022 · 26/09/2022 19:40

I've always done it. Also wiped my office door handles. Kettle not an issue for me as I don't drink hot drinks at work.

delilahhey · 26/09/2022 19:42

YANBU for disinfecting your computer

YABU for referencing a real life-altering mental illness as an equivalent to just wanting to disinfect a keyboard. Please don't do that again.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 26/09/2022 19:43

Nope.

I'm the only one who uses my computer, desk, chair etc and they are cleaned daily by our wonderful cleaners.

I also know that I wash my hands after using the loo so I'm not overly concerned about it.

dudsville · 26/09/2022 19:44

I do not have unreasonable concerns re germs. On the contrary, I was very slow to get on the bandwagon when at work we were being asked to use hand sanitiser on the weeks leading up to the lockdown. However i used to always wipe my desk area, computer or screen, mouse and keyboard down regularly.

WhatALoadOfWankyness · 26/09/2022 19:58

Not office but I spray and wipe my door bell/knocker , guests downstairs loo handles and taps
Always have

ginghamstarfish · 26/09/2022 20:00

Good idea, DH always did this, lots of grubby people who don't wash hands, eat greasy stuff while at keyboard etc.

Someone said on here recently that she and her DH don't wash their hands and I don't think it was a joke.

It’s not health anxiety, just a few simple precautions. And they work - I’m really very healthy. Evidenced by the fact I haven’t had an upset stomach in over 45 years… Germs are good when an immune system is being developed. And I ate plenty of dirt when I was a child. But I still don’t want your norovirus because you can’t be arsed to wash your hands properly.
