To wipe the keyboard and mouse in work with a disinfectant wipe?

To be honest, I never really did this before covid and I still tend to do it but I feel a bit odd doing it as nobody else seems to do it!

I’m not the only who touches my computer do, multiple people do so goodness knows what germs it would be lingered with!

every morning or after someone else has touched it, I always give it a wipe with a disinfectant wipe.

YABU - you must have OCD
YANBU - you are right to do that, It’s just good hygiene

@PorkPieAndAPickledOnion
Why are you assuming Your'll catch anything from me?
I too am never ill so I doubt Your'll catch it off me. I just don't covid spray everything or worry that much about others and their 'germs'.

Oblomov22 · 26/09/2022 20:48

Are you all catching covid from work surfaces then?

EllietheElephanti · 26/09/2022 20:50

Of course YANBU there are all sorts of germs on keyboards, covid or not

in our office we hot desk but have our own keyboards and mouse

Notateacheranymore · 26/09/2022 20:50

I'm the only person in the office that uses my computer, and it still gets a wipe a few times a day. I work in a poultry processing factory, but don't go anywhere near the production line. I am still quite cautious, because you never know who opened the door to Reception or the canteen just before you, EVEN THOUGH the operatives are all meant to wash their hands before leaving the line and after breaks.

No but I've definitely known noro outbreaks come from filthy offices.

^^ this.

When our office switched to hot desking, everyone was issued with a keyboard and mouse of their own and we use those. I think it makes a lot of sense.

TimboWimbo · 26/09/2022 21:00

I’ve always done it. Some people’s desks (and everything on them) are absolutely minging. And the phones, Some of them are revolting!

asblindasabat · 26/09/2022 21:00

Covid is an airborne virus just as flu is.

All it takes is someone with covid to cough/sneeze over a computer keyboard or cough/sneeze into their hands and touch the keyboard and mouse and then someone else can pick it up that way.

YNBU i work in a hot desking kind of environment where the desks are on constant use 24/7, all year round. I disinfect every single thing I touch including the chairs, screens etc etc. sone of my colleagues are disgusting and even with out covid I'd be wiping it all down.

Ein · 26/09/2022 21:05

At my old office, pre-covid, the cleaners used to do that every night. Quick disinfect of desk and keyboard. It’s just good sense.

Snap!

There’s also a theory that cancer rates are so incredibly high these days, when it used to be a rare disease, because our immune systems are constantly under attack from germ after germ.

Germs may indeed be normal, but the amount we are exposed to every day, because of the amount we mix via schools, commuter trains etc, is far from normal.

pimlicoanna · 26/09/2022 21:10

We are required to do so.. not that I actually ever go into the office!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/09/2022 21:11

I've always done this and I'm a filthy pig by Mumsnet standards.

Given how few people wash their hands, you are being very sensible. Might be worth occasionally turning your keyboard upside down and giving it a good slap to see if you dislodge any other gunk.

Yes. Agree with this ☝️

RoseMartha · 26/09/2022 21:15

This sounds like me. When I used to go in the office (now wfh), I wiped my phone and keyboard and mouse before I used it. If someone came and popped on my pc even for a brief moment I wiped it again.

inheritanceshiteagain · 26/09/2022 21:15

Good god yes. Men often don't wash their hands when they pee.

I think the thing that always moves this stuff into the “bit odd” (not “OCD”) category to me is that usually it’s something the person is doing almost like a superstition to ward off germs, because there are SO many things the person isn’t doing (apologies if this doesn’t apply to you at all, OP). I mean, your cell phone is 10 times dirtier than a toilet seat, so I certainly hope you’re never touching it and then touching other people’s belongs (gasp!) or your face (shock!) or eating!!!! (blech). And I hope you never place your handbag anywhere but a hook or the floor - never on your chair before you sit there, or your sofa, or Heaven forfend, your bed, since your handbag handles have three times the bacteria of a loo flushing. So don’t ever eat after touching them either!!! (I mean, how many of us have carried our handbags into a cafe, sat down, and then eaten something? Lots of us? So…) This is just my point. I mean, I suppose IF you’re sanitizing yourself after every time you touch your phone or your handbag before you touch anything else that might come into contact with your coworker’s belongings or your food, then sure, have at wiping down a keyboard, etc. And OP, maybe you do all of this. But if you’re not… the germs on your phone are going to “get you” long before keyboard roulette plays a more sinister role.

I started doing this years ago at evening classes when a woman came in with a cold sore and no Compeed patch Envy

TheChosenTwo · 26/09/2022 21:39

Yanbu to keep things clean but I don’t bother. I never eat at my desk and only I use it. I wash my hands when I use the toilet obviously but other than that I’ll take my chances.
Germs are good for you!

Not to be too graphic but the difference with your own phone or bag is that both are regularly cleaned and not touched by others who don’t wash their hands after using the loo.

mdinbc · 26/09/2022 21:55

I have my own wireless keyboard and mouse, so use it. Also my own pens/highlighters. Gives me an excuse to have my own cute pencil case! I also wipe down the desk area, phone, etc.

We do hot-desk, and it only takes a few moments to clean.

Pedallleur · 26/09/2022 22:02

I work in IT. I watch people picking their noses, eating crisps, all the stuff people do and go to use kybd. Hotdesking is a real generator of bugs etc. Don't assume anyone washes their hands.
