Gino D'Acampo's accent

He was born and grew up in Sheffield. Even if he grew up with a solely/mostly Italian speaking family (I don't know if he did?) surely he wouldn't speak with such a strong accent.

I work with a lot of Indian families in my area. English isn't spoken at home however the children are so exposed to the local accent outside of home that they speak predominantly with the local accent.

So, how fake (or not) is his accent?

Yes, I know I shouldn't be giving him any headspace. He happened to be on TV and was hugging an old woman whose body language was screaming "get off me".

@Justleaveitblankthen yes his toad in the hole or as he calls it 'sausage een the ole' has them clutching the worktop for support Hmm

MimosaSunrise · 26/09/2022 07:31

3. She was however disgusted that he chose to cook a beef carpaccio with gremolata when he was in Puglia on the basis that 'we've never seen a cow in Puglia, we don't really do beef'. So his credentials as an Italian chef are still up in the air.

The other reason I’m not fond of Gino is the food. Whatever the big trend is in the UK in Italian food, Gino’s there with a book or restaurant. Prosecco bars and cicchetti? Gino’s onto it. He’s trying to be all things to all people, so I find his approach to food pretty much the antithesis of what is so great about Italian cuisine.

He reminds me of that Italian captain from Allo Allo. Totally put-on accent, he's lived in Britain for nearly 40 years. Just like Arnold Schwarzenegger who had to be coached to retain his Austrian accent, because it was part of his "brand".

Media studies? 🤣

It was from a friend who is nornally reliable. 😂 I shall have words and never believe a thing she says ever again.

She has met him a few times (well that's what he says... 🤣) and thinks he is awful. He's always seemed a bit sleazy but l've never paid much attention. It just happened he was on TV and made me think.

Yes media studies. To prompt some critical thinking OP. At the very least to encourage the little voice in your head which says "does that sound right? That can't be right. Let me check...."

Mingot · 26/09/2022 07:58

Actually Paul Young recently said that since his wife died he would give anything to have the tapes Gino stole back and that it's hard to see him on tv.

HuzzahIndeed · 26/09/2022 08:11

@Double0FeckingBollocks I have a PHD. I'm fine with my critical thinking skills but thank you for your concern.

I made the mistake of believing a normally reliable friend about where someone grew up. I don't critically access and go off and research everything people close to me say and I doubt you do.

Ha ha the " I have a PhD" card. Congratulations OP.

HuzzahIndeed · 26/09/2022 15:49

Thank you very much @Double0FeckingBollocks. You will appreciate how hard it was, so to have your sincere congratulations means the world to me.

LovinglifeAF · 26/09/2022 15:51

Haha, you’d get on well with my husband. He’s always moaning that he thinks Gino’s accent is hammed up! I haven’t really thought much about it.

LovinglifeAF · 26/09/2022 15:53

Russell19 · 25/09/2022 20:09

My husband also says the accent is fake 🤣 it makes me laugh

Are you married to my husband too? 😆

Rosehugger · 26/09/2022 15:54

I think he does ramp up the accent a little bit for TV. Reminds me of a local barber when I was a kid- heard him speaking outside the shop once or twice with quite a Mancunian accent but he really put on the Italiano in the shop.

DillDanding · 26/09/2022 15:58

I think there's a lot of exaggerating in his accent and all that faux mispronunciation - but he's not faking the Italian accent.

HairyMothballs · 26/09/2022 16:01

I can't stand the bloke and I think he puts that accent on. He did 2 years in prison for burglary of home of singer Paul Young Shock

HuzzahIndeed · 26/09/2022 16:04

I do remember how "hilarious" he was on TM when someone sent him a willy warmer and he wore it

msbevvy · 26/09/2022 16:21

DH and I can't stand him. We saw him live at the Festival Hall and he was so full of himself and acting like he's God's gift to women.

We usually turn over the moment his face appears on the TV but we discovered last night whilst waiting for the next programme to come on that the best way to watch his show is with the sound turned down and subtitles on. That way you get to see the beautiful scenery and lovely food without being distracted by him and his ego.

Is the armed robbery story a joke as well?Poor man. Much maligned.

It isn't done with and as Mingot said neither is Paul Young (I thought I'd seen him say that)

I don't care if he has apologised, what's that phrase trotted out on here all the time
'If someone shows you their true self, believe them'

I work with plenty of people who are on the bones of their arse and yet manage to choose not to burgle.

@lollipoprainbow I forgot about the drink driver, rotten the lot of them.

As an Italian who's been living here for almost two decades I'd say his accent is real. The two languages are so different than many Italians keep a strong accent even if they have lived here for 40 years. How you pick up a foreign language and master it is very personal and I personally know many many Italians whose English is still poor or they have strong accent after a lifetime here.
And, it's virtually impossible to fake your own accent in another language. I do agree he's over doing everything else from the gestures to the food.
Nobody knows him in Italy and many of his recipes would not even be considered Italian.

greektreacle · 26/09/2022 06:38

My wife and I (native Italian speaker) have just invested 25 mins in research on this. It was a rollercoaster:

  1. Basically his accent when speaking Italian is 'light Neapolitan' but definitely native.
  1. She described his Italian accent when speaking English as 'a Maltese-Italian car crash', which I can agree with (we lived in Malta for a bit so feel able to say that with confidence).
  1. She was however disgusted that he chose to cook a beef carpaccio with gremolata when he was in Puglia on the basis that 'we've never seen a cow in Puglia, we don't really do beef'. So his credentials as an Italian chef are still up in the air.

She's in the kitchen now doing breathing exercises to calm down. She also has questions about the Paul Young incident.

I have a Maltese parent. Completely agree! Funnily enough said Maltese parent moved over here when they were 22 and still speak with a strong Maltese accent.

Frances0911 · 26/09/2022 17:00

He was born in Italy but his accent is definitely exaggerated and is annoying. Especially when he pretends he doesn't realise he is mispronouncing and saying inappropriate words.

Twawmyarse · 26/09/2022 17:04

MervynPumpkinhead · 25/09/2022 21:28

He burgled Paul Youngs House and stole tapes that had videos of his dead wife that have never been recovered

🥱 get over it, Paul Young has.

To me personally, being capable of breaking and entering someone's house and stealing personal items is a pretty strong indication of what type of person someone is.

ie. Not a nice person at heart in all probability.

blockpavingismynightmare · 26/09/2022 17:10

Of course his accent is fake but who cares?

liveforsummer · 26/09/2022 17:13

Not all people who grow up here adopt the local accent anyway. I work in a school and while many do lots always speak with a strong accent - particularly many of the Polish children go off to high school with strong accents and English still very much a second language despite being born here. I guess due to the strong Polish community here so out of school they aren't speaking English with friends and even in the playground they often play with the other Polish dc and don't speak English. We also have dc with strong English accents (in a part of Scotland with a strong local dialect) and some never pick it up. Despite only one parent having that accent
