Gino D'Acampo's accent

He was born and grew up in Sheffield. Even if he grew up with a solely/mostly Italian speaking family (I don't know if he did?) surely he wouldn't speak with such a strong accent.

I work with a lot of Indian families in my area. English isn't spoken at home however the children are so exposed to the local accent outside of home that they speak predominantly with the local accent.

So, how fake (or not) is his accent?

Yes, I know I shouldn't be giving him any headspace. He happened to be on TV and was hugging an old woman whose body language was screaming "get off me".

He was born and raised in Italy! His middle name is Sheffield which is perhaps where the info has come from, albeit muddled?

Wasn't born with that middle name though obviously

bellac11 · 25/09/2022 20:32

Ive met plenty of Italians with a similar accent.

loislovesstewie · 25/09/2022 20:35

He was born in Torre Del Greco. He could read a menu to me and I would melt. Yes, I love Italians, Italy, the food, the wine, just everything really. Sigh.

Shiningstarr · 25/09/2022 20:35

I've always thought his accent must be exaggerated for tv. Either way he's got to be one of the most annoying people on tv.

Rosewaterblossom · 25/09/2022 20:35

I always thought Keith Lemons "Sheffield " spoof was a name play because Gina's a chef.. 🤔 I'm probably wrong though 😆

MervynPumpkinhead · 25/09/2022 20:48

🤣🤣🤣 this thread is brilliant. Thank you OP, I'm glad toi didn't google before posting as this has made my Sunday night. The Sheffield thing is indeed because of Keith Lemon and Gino D'Acampo is now called Sheffield after Keith Lemon changed his name by deed poll on Celebrity Juice.

Peace out

One of my Year 10s has been in the country 3 years and still has an incredibly strong accent but her younger brother doesn't. The French children at the yard pretty much lost their accents within a year, the older one still has a slight intonation, the younger one sounds like a local.

Bunnynames101 · 25/09/2022 21:10

Dredging up some late night channel hopping from many moons ago.

Gino gained his middle name 'sheffield' when Leigh francis' character on celebrity Juice offered his team points in exchange for changing his name by deed poll.

As cleared up in the very first post...

TheGoodEnoughWife · 25/09/2022 21:20

Having watched him for years on shows like This Morning I believe he plays up the accent more now than he used to.

There was a couple of times he said something 'hilarious' or mispronounced a word on TM that was just 'so funny' and now he gets more Italian each time he is on.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 25/09/2022 21:21

Yes the Sheffield bit is funny BUT...

He burgled Paul Youngs House and stole tapes that had videos of his dead wife that have never been recovered.

I judge that more than jumping a Queue.

A580Hojas · 25/09/2022 21:24

Good point OP. I've always been suspicious of his accent. I have quite a number of friends of his age or thereabouts for whom English is not their first language. None of them speak with such a strong accent. I too think it's not quite real.

🥱 get over it, Paul Young has.

TokenGinger · 25/09/2022 21:29

He moved to the UK at age 18. My DP also moved to the UK at age 18, after living in Nigeria from age 8 to 18, and speaks with a strong Nigerian accent even after 20 years.

My granddad has lived in England for 59 years after moving from Ireland aged 20, and still has a strong Irish accent.

Paul added: “I try to keep a light-hearted attitude on that. He gets enough stick on social networking – he doesn’t need my help as well.”

I wouldn't say he got over it, rather he is a better man than Gino.

Allthestarsabovemyhead · 25/09/2022 21:33

I think he exaggerates a bit. My parents are not from the UK and don’t have such a strong accent.

What has Paul said about the break-in?

Paul has chosen to forgive Gino for his past crimes against him.

In 2011 he told the Evening Standard that Gino had contacted him to personally apologise before he went on I'm A Celebrity in 2009.

He said: "I don't hold it against him. He said it was bad and he apologised, and I did get most of the stuff back. "

"Maybe he needed his wrist slapping and he got that. He said he was in a terrible place at that time and wanted to turn his life around."^^

nothingcomestonothing · 25/09/2022 21:49

Have you ever seen Gangsta Granny? Robbie Williams's character, with a ridiculous Mediterranean accent? That's what Gino's accent reminds me of.

user7845209 · 25/09/2022 21:59

My late uncle was Italian, was married to my Aunt for over 50 years, lived in the UK, he never lost his accent

Justleaveitblankthen · 25/09/2022 22:01

Doesn't the Strictly Judge speak exactly the same though? Bruno Tonlioni is it? I have never watched more than a clip of it 😂

MrsRhodes · 25/09/2022 22:08

I don't think you always pick up the local accent. My Nanny and grandad are both Irish and both moved to England at the same age - one sounds like they've never set foot in Ireland, the other still has such a thick accent - both been in England since they were 10.

Are you his PA, wife or mum?

Rewis · 25/09/2022 22:36

I'm sure he has an Italian accent opposed to yourkshire. but he plays it up for his public persona. It is part of his brand.

I love Gino! Very very funny on Michael MacIntyre's big show doing the 'midnight game show', trying to remember the name of Sponge Bob Square Pants. Also that clip of his comment after Holly Willoughby suggested adding ham to his pasta sauce, I will try to find it, so funny.
