Gino D'Acampo's accent

Squirrelsquirrel · 25/09/2022 20:03

He was born and grew up in Sheffield. Even if he grew up with a solely/mostly Italian speaking family (I don't know if he did?) surely he wouldn't speak with such a strong accent.

I work with a lot of Indian families in my area. English isn't spoken at home however the children are so exposed to the local accent outside of home that they speak predominantly with the local accent.

So, how fake (or not) is his accent?

Yes, I know I shouldn't be giving him any headspace. He happened to be on TV and was hugging an old woman whose body language was screaming "get off me".

I think Gino does ham it up a little bit. However, people’s accents can be more or less responsive to their environment, and shaped by how well you pick up languages generally. My DH is Italian & has lived in the U.K. for eight years full-time. He only has a very slight accent in English now. But his colleague has been here for 30+ years and still has a thick ‘Italian’ accent when speaking in English. Both highly educated and working in an environment that puts a good deal of stress on verbal communication and speaking well. So Gino’s accent is probably real, but perhaps a little exaggerated for the camera!

UneFoisAuChalet · 25/09/2022 23:03

I call total bullshit on his accent.

My ex husband is Italian. His parents were born and raised in Italy and to this day never ever speak English unless they absolutely have to and definitely not to their children (his mother is a housewife and dad self employed and they only socialised with other Italians). Ex sounds like everybody else he grew up with. None of this bullshit accent and talking with hands and raving about pasta.
The last thing first generation children of immigrants do is emulate a caricature of their parents’ culture.
It’s such stereotypical nonsense. He could do his stupid shows without the pantomime.

MervynPumpkinhead · 25/09/2022 23:23

Hes not a 1st generation child of immigrants. He was born and raised in Italy and moved here at 18. From watching him on Gordon Gino and Fred it very much seems like he still spends a lot of time in Italy. His children are 1st generation of an immigrant parent, and were/ are raised in UK though.

In that case why isn’t Gino allowed to have an accent like all the people who he grew up with?

user7845209 · 26/09/2022 05:49

It's sometimes hard to tell some people do pick up the local accent, whereas others keep their old accent. DBIL has lived near New Orleans for years and has picked up this very broad American accent which I was sure was put on but we were with him for a couple of days and it didn't lapse at all so probably real

BradPittsLeftTit · 26/09/2022 06:11

Sorry but I think this thread is in really poor taste.

OP didn't do the bare basic check of plugging into Google and so follows a bunch of equally misinformed and dodgy posts.

I know several Italians that came over to the UK in their late teens/early 20s and all still speak with a strong accent 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is a case of 'man from Italy who grew up in Italy, was raised by Italians and works with food has an Italian accent and talks about pasta...AIBU?' Ermmmm yes.

Naimee87 · 26/09/2022 06:17

Totally think the accent is fake! Work for an Italian and seeing one and nowhere near as thick as his and they both still live in Italy. Doesn‘t help he annoys the crap

Tootels · 26/09/2022 06:18

How can someone fake an accent 24/7.

Naimee87 · 26/09/2022 06:18

posted too soon! annoys the crap out of me that should have said. But definitely a heavy amount of fakery in that accent!

BadNomad · 26/09/2022 06:33

The accent people have when talking English is largely down to who they learned English from and how much of an "English" accent they mimicked while learning. A lot of people just keep their own accent. It's ridiculous to say anyone with a strong accent must be faking it because "my mate Lorenzo from Italy sounds cockney and he's only been here for 5 years".

greektreacle · 26/09/2022 06:38

My wife and I (native Italian speaker) have just invested 25 mins in research on this. It was a rollercoaster:

  1. Basically his accent when speaking Italian is 'light Neapolitan' but definitely native.
  1. She described his Italian accent when speaking English as 'a Maltese-Italian car crash', which I can agree with (we lived in Malta for a bit so feel able to say that with confidence).
  1. She was however disgusted that he chose to cook a beef carpaccio with gremolata when he was in Puglia on the basis that 'we've never seen a cow in Puglia, we don't really do beef'. So his credentials as an Italian chef are still up in the air.

She's in the kitchen now doing breathing exercises to calm down. She also has questions about the Paul Young incident.

greektreacle · 26/09/2022 06:39

Oh my 1 turned into a bullet point 😳

Are you his PA, wife or mum?

…….yeah, that wasn’t funny three years ago when I first saw it posted on here

It’s a lame response, the last resort to post to someone who has provided incontrovertible facts to end a personal assassination of someone.

People can be keen to provide information that ends speculation, without them having to be a relative or interested party.

No I’m not his aunt, his lover or his business manager.

Are you with him 24/7? 😬

People can definitely turn their accents up a notch when they want to or it’s beneficial to them. I don’t think it matters if he does that, he’s Italian, it’s not like he lying.

I don’t believe that he didn’t understand the bike reference on This Morning, but again, does it matter if it makes some people laugh. I’m not really a fan of his but if he’s no longer burgling houses, that’s a good thing. 😏 Whether it’s fair that he should have been given the chance to be on tv shows over other chefs, is the real question. But it’s who you know and how good your PR people are I suppose. And life’s not fair as we all know.

Tootels · 26/09/2022 06:52

No but he's filmed at all hours early morning very late. Goes away with Fred and Gordon.

MrsDThomas · 26/09/2022 06:53

he puts it on. And those innuendos.

if he was a work colleague in an office he’d be called a pervert. But its Gino and he’s on TV so its ok🙄

he’s a leech,

Not 24/7 though. People can make their accents stronger, it’s a thing. It doesn’t matter whether he does or doesn’t though.

lollipoprainbow · 26/09/2022 06:57

@MissingNashville he's another one from the itv stable who can do no wrong. His 'innuendos' are deliberate so the queue jumpers who present it can snigger and snort like a couple of kids.

What's the thing with Craig David?

Dig up Bo Selecta, old TV series. Hilarious. Bogle Bogle!

I agree there’s a protected group. Again, it’s who you know and how much you know that could cause problems. Dodgy af. Same old though.

MimosaSunrise · 26/09/2022 07:16

Rewis · 25/09/2022 22:36

I'm sure he has an Italian accent opposed to yourkshire. but he plays it up for his public persona. It is part of his brand.

This. I’m not keen on the guy at all and how he’s made comedy Italian into his USP, and am very sure he’s hamming things up on TV, but I don’t doubt he still has a very Italian accent.

Wtf? End a personal assassination? End speculation? He went to prison it isn't speculation.

All I have done is post what he personally chose to do. Actions have consequences and forgive me for not fawning over a burglar, a thief.

lollipoprainbow · 26/09/2022 07:23

@MrsRobinsonsHandprints he's from the itv stable you mustn't criticise him !! He's untouchable as they all are, drink drivers, thief's, queue jumpers.

Oh God yes - those constant innuendos. 🙄 You can spot them minutes before by seeing what ingredients he is using. Cue endless mirth from the Queue Jumpers.

I think that Gino is gorgeous to look at and his shows full of beautiful scenery, but I can't watch him at all. Not on anything he does.
Can't stand his 'cheeky little boy' act and honestly, in Italy he isn't really stand out among others.
