It's so difficult for those "left behind" but they shouldn't feel guilty. As a friend of mine whose dh had committed suicide (about 20 years ago ) said, it was the black dog of depression that took him.

I'm so sorry to read this, @AcrossthePond55. I've been trying to remember an article I read by someone whose partner committed suicide and who talked about "the black dog of depression". I hadn't realized that though Winston Churchill popularized the expression last century, it actually originated with Horace. I think of Robin Williams, too, he couldn't be helped, either, so your DS really shouldn't be taking on guilt for this, if you see what I mean. I hope your pre-Christmas gathering was as pleasant as it could be in the circumstances.

Damn, that took me back. Nor pleasantly.... I was sixteen, and I was the last person to speak to my cousin before she very calmly went home and jumped off her roof. It was no fun feeling guilty about it. Your DS has my sympathy. (But it does get better, or at least less raw, in the end.)

Oh I'm so sorry you had that experience, and at 16 to boot! It must have been so hard to deal with at such a young age.

I wasn't angling for sympathy! just explaining why I do know, and I do feel tremendous sympathy for your DS. What I got from it (thanks to my lovely, sensible mother) was that nothing I'd said or done caused it, and nothing I'd said or done could have stopped it, either. I do very much hope your DS reaches that realisation and is able to feel a bit better, sooner rather than later. It's a horrid shock to the system at any age.

Maybe it's just my distraction, but the news seems to be very 'un-Doofus-y' lately. As in he isn't splashed all over the papers/1st 10 minutes of the news. We were concerned that he'd be 'front and centre' of every broadcast once he announced 2024. I don't know if he's 'laying low' because of all his legal troubles or if the GOP 'worm' is indeed turning (away). Either way, it's been nice to be able to watch a newscast without DH shouting at the screen.

The House Cmte has now been given copies of Doofus' federal tax returns. The article states "The documents are not expected to be immediately released to the public". This is interesting as when it was first indicated that the taxes would most likely be released, the House Cmte indicated that they 'wouldn't' be released to the public.

Across, I hope your son is doing ok. Has he thought about talking to a grief counsellor or therapist? Grief compounded by guilt, even when misplaced, is such a heavy load.

He's doing better. Has gone back into the office for a few days (normally WFH), has started eating again, and we're all getting together for my birthday on Saturday.

I can only say God bless my darling, lovely DiL. She totally 'gets' him and knows the right balance of 'stern logic' and 'loving sympathy', whereas I'd be 'smother mothering' him and probably making things worse. She's bringing him through this beautifully.

Agree! Another blow to Doofus' legal woes. But I'm sure they'll appeal all the way to SCOTUS. Although they don't seem to be proving as 'loyal' as Doofus expected them to be.

I just hate all the long drawn out filings/appeal/judgement. Of course, Doofus legal strategy is to draw things out until after the swearing in of the new House. The disbanding of the Jan 6 Cmte will be the first thing on their agenda and that disbanding will render a lot of the legal woes moot.

I'm praying for a Deep Throat to leak the tax returns. There's GOT to be someone on the scene who either cares about this country enough or has nothing to lose.
