I have seen many suggesting that this tape was leaked by the orange one himself

https://twitter.com/kaitlancollins/status/1673487276708331521?s=20

The Trump audio:

"See as president I could have declassified it. Now I can't, you know, but this is still a secret."

"Now we have a problem," a staffer responds.

AcrossthePond55 · 28/06/2023 00:23

Since it was released he's certainly trying to 'spin' the tape as 'exonerating' him. But where he gets that I have no idea. All the legal experts are saying "Oops, he did it again" and saying that it's proof and admission of removing, retaining, and concealing classified materials. And then lying about it.

I'm sure the cult is believing him 100%, though. They'd see a video of him 'shooting someone on 5th Ave' and believe him when he said he didn't do it. They're all under the 'Imperius Curse' lol.

BruceAndNosh · 28/06/2023 06:31

He's obviously learnt the word Exonerate recently (word of the day toilet paper?).
But he definitely doesn't know what it means either semantically or legally.
His spokesperson "explained" that he was talking hypothetically...

I have to admit, listening to the actual tape rather than just reading the transcript (unlike many members of Congress, I've actually done both) was quite nauseating because of the tone of his voice - look at me, aren't I great - and the toadying of the others, pandering to his ego.

BruceAndNosh · 28/06/2023 06:33

What worries me is Judge Cannon.
She's clearly not going to recuse herself and I suspect she'll tread a careful line, supporting Trump as much as she can without overstepping the line.

AcrossthePond55 · 28/06/2023 16:12

@BruceAndNosh

I share your concerns about Judge C. But I'm sure the prosecution team (and higher ups in the DoJ) are keeping a very close eye on her rulings and going through them with a fine tooth comb, and she knows it. There are procedures for petitioning to have a judge removed from a case or that judge's rulings overturned. I doubt it happens very often, but this is a high profile case and the DoJ aren't going to take chances with it.

Wallaw · 28/06/2023 16:17

Goodness, my head is spinning with all of Trump's confessions, retractions, withdrawals of confessions and retractions, restatements of withdrawn statements, re-confessions, etc. But we all know the FBI planted all the papers, anyway. 😅

Re Judge Aileen, I'm as pessimistic as you can get these days, but I feel pretty confident that Jack Smith knows what he's doing and has this under control. Looks like they might be teeing up for DC and New Jersey too, maybe as backups, seems to be the speculation.

BruceAndNosh · 28/06/2023 16:36

It IS hard to keep up @Wallaw!
As far as I can follow, the FBI planted the documents that TFG subsequently insisted he had every right to take. The Bedminster tape... there was no document just magazine clippings which were given to him by the Defence department who also gave him the plans of the Golf course which is what he was referring to as a Plan.

And so rests the case for the defence, your Honour...

For sure! The latest was one of his 'spokesperson' saying his comments were 'taken out of context'.

How can 'this is a secret document', 'I can't declassify this now', and 'Look at this, so cool!' and 'It wasn't a document, it was papers' be taken out of context?

Thank you so much for this. I remember Trump's full page adverts demanding their execution.
And the series 'When They See Us' on NF was so moving, and reduced me to tears with the injustice of it all.

This is just so moving..

And Trump would never acknowledge he got it wrong, with the usual 'people on both sides' bollocks. Disgusting man.

Trump is countersueing E Jean Carroll for defamation because Jury "only" found him liable for sexual assault not rape.
What a disgrace of a man

There is no bar too low for him to try to get under. I was pleased to see that he's been ordered to put the money he owes her in some kind of escrow/trust. Guess the judge isn't taking any chances on bankruptcy/prison etc.

@Roussette

Yes, I teared up too reading it. I haven't been able to get myself to watch Now They See Us - I grew up in NY and remember the absolute horror that gripped the city at the attack. I didn't pay any attention to Trump then (just thought he was your standard crooked real estate developer with a big mouth), but clearly it was an early harbinger and we should have been paying more attention.

PerkingFaintly · 29/06/2023 11:42

Don't know about libel law in the jurisdiction where TFG is suing, but my understanding of UK libel law is that he'd get nowhere with that claim in the UK.

IANAL but have followed a couple of libel trials, and IIUC essentially in the UK you can only win a claim of defamation if you have a character to lose, and if the words of the other person have damaged that character.

If like TFG you have already admitted on tape that you commit sexual assaults (the Access Hollywood tapes) and have already been found guilty of a specific sexual assault by a jury (Carroll), then your known character is that you are a sex offender. It is therefore difficult to claim that any other allegation of sexual assault damages your character.

I remember after the Jeffrey Archer libel trial someone pointing out that it would now be safe to say anything you liked about Archer, true or not, because the trial had established he was a liar and had no character to lose. So even if you knowingly lied about him, what he couldn't do is sue you for defamation.

Jeffrey Archer showed his true colours too. He borrowed twenty quid off my dad in the late 70s. Never paid him back 😮😳

If Rudy Giuliani went to see Jack Smith under a proffer agreement because he wants to cop a plea, Trump is in serious trouble, because Giuliani was behind the scenes on a LOT of illegal hustling in 2019 and 2020. And Giuliani would be very stupid to try to lie about it: there's too much evidence gathered already. I think he might at this point throw Trump under the bus before Trump throws him there.

AcrossthePond55 · 29/06/2023 21:19

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/28/us/politics/giuliani-jan-6-investigation.html

We were up in the woods last week so I didn't really hear much about this. Didn't know it was under a proffer agreement, but it doesn't surprise me.

Rudy is just as much a dirty snake as Doofus is and he knows he can't count on any help from Doofus or his legal crew. In fact, he knows that Doofus will throw him under the bus first chance he gets if he thinks it'll help his case. So Rudy just wants to get in there first.

What remains to be seen is how much dirt Rudy is willing to reveal to get his 'deal' and how hard the DoJ is going to push him for 'the rest of the story'. And of course,DoJ knows he's as big a liar as Doofus is and they're going to want proof of any allegations he makes. Partly because he's such a known liar and partly because Doofus will simply deny it all and say Rudy's just trying to get himself out of the shit.

I look back at the post-9/11 Rudy and wonder how he's sunk so far.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/06/2023 21:44

Weee-e-e-e-ell

Giuliani was the one who made the decision to locate the NYC Office of Emergency Management headquarters (an obvious target for a terrorist attack) on the 23rd floor inside the 7 World Trade Center building, in spite of being aware it was a terrorist terrorist target and in spite of there being a location for that headquarters recommended in Brooklyn and not on a target area. If he had not made that decision, there might have been a shed-load fewer fatalities on 9/11. Especially among the first-responders. The emergency management was too busy evacuating its personnel to manage the emergency....

After that he absolutely had to do well on the rest of it, didn't he, or he would have been completely buried. So he lied and didn't admit that it was faulty radios which led to the deaths of firefighters who didn't follow instructions to leave the buildings before they were killed; radios he had not had tested. He claimed they stayed "to try to save more lives". Yes, that made them heroes; no it was not true. They simply didn't hear the order to withdraw before the whole thing came down.

He claimed to have been at Ground Zero both at the time (untrue) and for a lot of the subsequent ten days (not true).

In other words he was just the same post-9/11 as he has been ever since and was before, but America desperately needed a Hero and he got selected for the position.

Trump is again trying to prevent Georgia Grand Jury from being presented with evidence which could lead to indictment https://edition.cnn.com/2023/07/14/politics/donald-trump-fani-willis-georgia-grand-jury/index.html

The lawyers filing includes the bizarre phrase
“It is one thing to indict a ham sandwich. To indict the mustard-stained napkin that it once sat on is quite another,” the lawyers wrote.
Did his lawyers just compare trump to a soiled paper napkin?
