Don't get me wrong, I want them to get Trump on something, but I'm a little disappointed it's this case. Small money to bribe people is par for the course with him. I'd much prefer to see the Georgia case close in on him.
It does feel a little like Al Capone getting his comeuppance for tax evasion..

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 19/03/2023 22:15

Tax evasion did the necessary job, didn't it?

Just because someone is in prison on one charge, does that mean they can't be tried for anything else? I genuinely don't know American law on this point; in England I am fairly certain they can be, just not for the same crime again.

PerkingFaintly · 19/03/2023 23:13

We did say, many moons ago, that the former guy might end up Al Caponed. It's the little things that matter...

PerkingFaintly · 19/03/2023 23:15

I'm sorry I haven't been contributing much to this thread. I know I should be using it as a record of Fox News' dastardly doings which are all pouring out now because of the Dominion lawsuit.

The way the news desk was scared to report Trump's loss because the viewers wouldn't like it and would switch over.... And much detail in the same vein.

PerkingFaintly · 19/03/2023 23:19

In the "protecting democracy" stakes, that's got to be one of the biggest events in US history.

We're used to the concept of political opponents trying to sabotage ballot boxes, or biased media trying to shepherd the public towards the owner's preferences.

But media TOO SCARED OF THE PUBLIC to tell them a simple thing like who got the most votes in an election...

Boggle.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/03/2023 12:28

It may have been being terrified of Rupert Murdoch's reaction if they went down in the ratings, to be fair, rather than fear of the public as such.

Maybe they reckon a crowd is going to turn up and riot whether Trump is there or not? There seems to be quite a strong chance he won't be; we only have his word for this arrest idea, and he is known not to be accurate.

I have a feeling that Trump is not all that much loved in New York; maybe there will be a counter-demonstration. Either way, if there is any trouble at all then out-of-towners are going to have a hard time pretending they weren't there; it's impossible to move ten yards in New York without surveillance footage being taken, ditto on all transport going in. Probably including boats.

DuncinToffee · 20/03/2023 15:26

He has been saying things like this

Donald trump just called on the NYPD to refuse to protect the people of New York from his potentially violent supporters.

Yes, fair point. But still, too scared to inform the public who their president-elect is, in case they don't like it and switch to a news channel who'll tell them they have a different president?

This is... out of my ken.

How can anyone read his rambling incoherent ALL CAPS nonsense and think "yes, I'd really like this guy to run my country" ?

Typical of him to think that some blatant flattery will bend the NYPD to his will. Just because it works on him and his cult, doesn't mean it works on people who actually have brains.

What a maroon.

I think they're either figuring an ounce of prevention etc etc or that a little 'security theatre' might make would be protestors (of any ilk) think twice before becoming 'un-peaceful'. Honestly, those barriers aren't going to stop anyone hell-bent on rioting.

Personally, I think TPTB are going to try their damnedest to have him whisked in and out via an underground garage. How much 'say' Doofus will have in this, I have no idea.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/03/2023 18:47

A lot will depend on his security detail, I suspect. If they are not the bunch of venial yes-men he had while he was in power, they may well decide to behave correctly and protect him by handing him in as quietly as possible whilst definitely handing him in.

He still has Secret Service protection and I pretty much trust them not to be yes men. I'm sure when he was in office it was a much more delicate balance between yes and no. Hopefully now that he's an EXPotus they feel much more comfortable about saying no.

But, and this is interesting, there was a report on NBC TV news today at noon (PST) saying that the Grand Jury was still interviewing witnesses (incl Cohen) at the time of broadcast. So far the only 'intel' we have is Doofus' own statement that he's going to be arrested on Tuesday. But the timeline of an arrest tomorrow just doesn't seem to fit with the news report that the GJ is still convening, does it?

Either he's trying to stir up trouble to put fear into the GJ to try to influence them, or the GJ has more charges they're investigating than we know about.

I meant venal, of course. That was a mento.

BruceAndNosh · 21/03/2023 14:35

I heard /read several legally knowledgeable commentators state that any arrest could be Monday or Wednesday but not Tuesday. I think the jury doesn't sit on Tuesdays

Roussette · 21/03/2023 14:48

Which could be exactly why he's calling for protests on Tuesday, in hopes of intimidating the GJ.

They're beefing up security, but IDK about everyone in uniform, etc, etc.

I can't say that I blame them. After Jan 6 we know how 'unpredictably predictable' the Cult can be. Better safe than sorry.

Re my reply to @BruceAndNosh above, I read last night that Doofus' own legal team is saying there 'won't be an arrest on Tuesday'. That it would likely be next week.

But who the fuck really knows.
