To think a lot of people assume everyone is tall?

I have noticed that people seem to think everyone is tall. In their definition they see "tall" as 6 foot or over for men and over 5 foot 7 for women. But in reality, that is not the case. In the UK, someone who is 6 foot (man) is

As a woman of 5ft 1, everyone seems tall to me Grin

Zara seems to think all women are really tall if their trouser lengths are anything to go by.

I'm 4ft 11. Everyone is tall and they don't give the slightest thought to the fact that some of us really struggle to reach, to see, to use mirrors put up by wankers etc!

I'm probably being dense but to me your second post seems to prove people are right in thinking men are tall at 6ft and women are tall at 5ft7??

To think in reality height is relative. If you are a man who is 5 feet 7 or 5 feet 8 you may be shorter than the average man, but you are still significantly taller than the average UK women which is around 5 feet 4.

How can you think everyone is tall?

Yo find it hard to judge if someone is tall/short unless I am stood next to them. It’s all proportional. So if I see someone on tv I can make assumptions but it could be everyone they are Attis next to are also tall/short if that makes sense.
I don’t really care though. It’s not like you can help it.

At 6"2' (and female) I have the exact opposite experience!

I'm 5ft 2, so quite short. I tend not to notice if someone is tall as nearly everyone is taller than me anyway!

a woman who is 5 foot 7 is taller than 88 percent of the UK population for women.

Really? That surprises me. DD is 5'7" and I think she's not that tall, she says she is and she doesn't like being tall 🤔. I'm just over 5'10" so I guess that skews my thinking.

Actually though, I'm 5ft 5.5 (to be precise) and have been described as small numerous times when I'm clearly not. So I dunno.

No because 5 foot 7 is not the average UK height it is around 5 foot 4 for women. So someone who is 5 foot 7 is taller than 88 percent of UK women roughly which proves that most women in the UK are not as tall as people perceive same with men the average height is around 5'9 to 5'10 for men so someone who is 6 foot is taller than 75 percent of UK male population. What I am suggesting is that it is more common to find someone around the 5'9-5'10 for men and 5'4 mark for women. But a lot of people just because they see people in their circle "my cousin is 6 feet 2 therefore that height is common" is not reality for most people .

Yes. Op's posts make no sense to me whatsoever. Are we missing something?

Not all tall people et cetera, of course, but some people will type something like im 5"8 so kind of average, or, im 5'9" so not that tall, or im 5'7 so I'm average. 😯🙄
There is a disconnect from what is statistically average.

As the shortest member of my family everyone is huge compared to me even my neighbours 11 year old kid is so perspective and tv/ movies make everyone look tall just look at 5'2" Tom Cruise

If you visit other countries they have different averages. I go from exactly average to giant in some places.

Really?

I'm 5"7 and people think I'm tall and I don't think there's many people who are that tall! I work in a female dominated environment and there's only about 3 woman out of 60 of us taller than me and a few about my height.

My mum was taller than me and my sister is.
My brother and dad are both over 6".

We always knew we are a tall family.

i think I might be too hungover for this. You’re making literally no sense. People think women over 5’7 are tall but also people think everyone is tall… what are you on about?!

I think I get it now you've explained, but the wording was misleading!

Report

I don't think you can use the average height in the UK to compare though can you. That average height is going to include 18 year olds. etc who especially for men haven't stopped growing yet and all the little old ladies and old men who have shrunk since they've become elderly. So the 'average' height will be short in comparison.

But you said in your first post that people think everyone is tall 'in their perception' men over 6 ft are tall, women over 5.7 are tall which is exactly right according to the percentiles you quoted.
Although now you seem to be saying something different...

As a 5ft 11 woman I find that a lot of things aren’t made for my height:
Kitchen work services and sinks
Buggy handles
Trolley handles should be adjustable too
Beds in holiday lets with bars/boards at the bottom
Leg room on public transport
Nearly all sleeves if not in tall ranges
Actual shops never stock tall ranges to try on (of maternity), but do stock petite

These things lead me to stoop so may have an actual effect on my back over the years.

Absolutely agree.

I was very surprised yesterday watching King Charles, QC Camilla and P. William stood side by side. I thought that K Charles was tall - I did t realise P. William was so tall.

Yet I still couldn't guess at exactly how tall any of them are.

I'm glad it's not just me! And I'm not hungover. Surely the only people who think everyone is tall are very short people
