We’d bought flights to get there, booked a hotel for 2 nights…yes we can still go to Leeds but we were going to see kaiser Chiefs, Nile rogers, elbow…I was looking forward to it.

we could have had a 2 minute silence, the national anthem. I’m not sure what cancelling it does really? You can show respect in other ways.

I totally understand, it must be really disappointing but the state funeral will possibly be next Sunday in which case it will be a national day of mourning. I'm sure they didn't want to risk having to cancel last minute so have made the decision now.

Yes it seems odd to me what's cancelled and what's not. Leeds Uni have not cancelled their open day. A period of mourning for the monarch is a tradition and that's what happens though!

R2 will probably need all their outside broadcast equipment for the funeral. Cancelling does seem ott though when they've been wanging on about it all summer.

There is a big difference needed resource wise for a festival vs a uni open day - eg the additional police presence needed, probably need to be redistributed to London for crowd control etc

But I agree it's shit for you

I agree with you.i liked the Queen and am sorry she has passed. However this cancelling of pre booked events sucks. A 2 minute silence would have been fine.will they reschedule the event. Maybe go anyway do some shopping see the Leeds armouries . Football match Chelsea cancelled today dh not happy!

There is not enough police to cover. The cycling tour of Britain has also had the last 3 days cancelled, with same reason sited

I can see why you are annoyed but it's about what's expected/respectful during a mourning period as well as resources. More is expected of public bodies which the BBC is.

I have cancelled an event because the staff all now have to be elsewhere that day on different duties.

It's ridiculous. All the people who were on zero hours contracts will now just not be paid. People who've bought train/plane tickets and hotels will now be out of pocket. The death of the Queen is an important event, but it seems to have brought out the virtue-signallers ("it's a mark of respect", "it's the right thing to do") and the downright flakey ("couldn't be arsed going to that party anyway, and the Queen's death is a good reason to flake out a the last minute"). I suspect the Queen would have told everyone to stop being silly and crack on.

We spent £££ for a premier League match today. It's been cancelled but rather than lose the money completely we're flying over to Liverpool for the day anyway. Carpe Diem

This country is so ridiculous now. Any excuse at all to cancel events or shut businesses. Workshy culture creeping in constantly.

I think with it being a BBC arranged event it was inevitable it would happen.

i am of the opinion things should go on with the right tributes but can see why this has been cancelled as frustrating as it is

A lot of events have had their police support pulled, which makes sense. Plus BBC probably need a lot of their resources to cover the funeral too.

Report
Bickles · 10/09/2022 07:33

We were supposed to go on Saturday too and DS is upset.
We are lucky that we live locally though so not out of pocket.
Shall we give you some suggestions on things to do in Leeds?

Don’t think the middle aged ravers at R2 live would need a lot of police support on top of private security company. I do kind of get the point that they need to have enough in hand in case of a major incident.

But say that…we need the cameras and crew or there’s not enough police. Not out of respect.

I agree. The show must go on. I don't understand why stuff has been cancelled this weekend as a 'sign of respect.' There are other ways of showing respect without messing up everyone's pre arranged plans. Fair enough on the day of the funeral, but otherwise I think its over the top.

The private security companies also have to redeploy staff though, a friend works for one and has been asked to cover some events related to the Queen’s death. While the police are there for actual policing/public order the private security staff are marshalling and directing crowds. It may be there aren’t enough local security staff to allow the event to be held safely.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 10/09/2022 07:46

Private security companies are also redeploying their staff to London to work alongside the police, DP works in Security and has had the event he was supposed to be working at cancelled (hes self employed so means no pay) but already had 3 companies contact him asking if he wants to work in London on the day of the funeral as they are having to supply a massive amount of staff.

Hmmm, I'm absolutely contemptuous of events being stopped out of 'respect'. But I do see how it might be a problem to do a big event that requires significant transport, logistics, policing capacity etc on a day that the funeral might be held. So it depends what the rationale is really.

Of course this is why we really need the date confirmed asap, so it costs the economy as little as possible.

There is a guide to what resources are needed based on numbers not the age of people attending!

given the role the BBC play in the country then primarily it will be out of respect but the other factors will also have come into play.

I do sort of understand why big events such as this might be cancelled now pps have explained regarding the resources etc but I think "out of respect" is a ridiculous reason when, as you say, a 2 minute silence/national anthem would suffice. Very frustrating for you though.

What I don't understand is smaller events being cancelled "out of respect", such as a local fete near me. Virtue signalling at its worst!

Yeah, that is absolutely pathetic bootlicking.

The logistics will be massive. I doubt there will ever have been so many VIPs in one place possibly ever re her funeral. All the world leaders will need accommodation etc as well. So I can well see why big events will be getting pulled. I do agree though that everything else should be carrying on as normal. The met office not reporting advance weather for example is bonkers.
