We’d bought flights to get there, booked a hotel for 2 nights…yes we can still go to Leeds but we were going to see kaiser Chiefs, Nile rogers, elbow…I was looking forward to it.

we could have had a 2 minute silence, the national anthem. I’m not sure what cancelling it does really? You can show respect in other ways.

Am I being unreasonable?

@Sirzy

You are right. It's The Purple Book. If the requirements are not fulfilled, your insurance etc is invalid.

This country is so ridiculous now. Any excuse at all to cancel events or shut businesses. Workshy culture creeping in constantly.

It's centuries old protocol.

Agree with it or disagree but the notion that a period of mourning for the death of a monarch is 'new' is factually incorrect.

I do sort of understand why big events such as this might be cancelled now pps have explained regarding the resources etc but I think "out of respect" is a ridiculous reason when, as you say, a 2 minute silence/national anthem would suffice. Very frustrating for you though.

What I don't understand is smaller events being cancelled "out of respect", such as a local fete near me. Virtue signalling at its worst!

It's not their decision. If it's anything involving the local council (which generally they all will) they have to be cancelled under the established protocol for this circumstance.

How many more of these 'pissed off' threads are we going to have?

Yanbu.
But the police are needed elsewhere. DS's police cadets is off next week as they need all the staff they can get.

Do you resent other types of virtue signalling as well or only this occasion? Give over, please

The logistics will be massive. I doubt there will ever have been so many VIPs in one place possibly ever re her funeral. All the world leaders will need accommodation etc as well. So I can well see why big events will be getting pulled. I do agree though that everything else should be carrying on as normal. The met office not reporting advance weather for example is bonkers.

Yes, that one was bemusing. Is there some logistical reason there that wouldn't be apparent to non-experts, or are they actually that daft?

I too am bemused about the weather reporting issue...🤔

BarrelOfOtters · 10/09/2022 08:14

The met office explained they meant they would just tweet about the weather and not other stuff..

I didn't know they tweeted about anything other than the weather!

@BarrelOfOtters I agree that everything being cancelled is a pain but a major BBC music event over the funeral weekend is to be expected though disappointing, however my DS's ice-skating today is virtu signalling.
The head of state is dead (whether you agree with the monarchy or not) and its right that the funeral takes prescient over a music concert and frankly I think you need to give yourself a shake

the80sweregreat · 10/09/2022 08:28

They probably need the security for the funeral and have to poach it from wherever

Its ridiculous and absolutely shit for you. My friend who works for the met police has her leave cancelled as well. No regard for the general public at all. Another reason why we shouldnt have monarchy

I get the security and police resourcing reasons but agree they should just say that.
I don't get why bake off has been cancelled on Tuesday?! TV will still be on, there isn't going to be anything happening at that time in the evening, it's not the day of the funeral. Doesn't make any sense

and not just any monarch, but one that built modern Britain and was one of the greatest leaders in history (says new PM Truss - who is no longer a Republican btw in case you hadn’t noticed the subtle hints)

That is down to local decision. I have just for back from Marshalling our local one, and I’m glad we did as it was lovely to be with and chat to others

That is magnificently stupid.

I think it's because of police resources. My friend is a PO and has said that they've all been called into duty since the Q death. They're on high alert. That means looking after the U.K. as a whole and not working on any cancellable events.

The cancellations are madness.

The most irrational has got to be the last night of the proms. I can't think of a more patriotic symbolic, fun but respectful event to mark the passing of a valued monarch and the welcoming of a new one. And yet they've cancelled it!

We were supposed to be attending a local Last Night of the Proms and that's been cancelled too. I agree - it would have been a wonderful tribute to gather with others and sing along to Land of Hope and Glory and other beautiful music. Surely they could have tweaked the programme if necessary to remove any items they considered to be 'frivolous'? Let's face it - classical music is generally considered to be disrespectful is it? 😏

The Queen’s body will likely be moved from Edinburgh to London on Tuesday. It’s going to be one of the days of stuff happening so that’ll be why.

It may be the evening of the Princes Vigil on the first evening on lying in state in London.

It isn't just people going to the events who are affected, there will be many on zero hour contracts who've lost paid work.

If you like rum there is a rum festival on at the corn exchange on Saturday (I'm going 😁)
