I've been clearing out some of my children's books on a local whatsapp small community group village yesterday. All books get snapped up, mums turn up to collect and pay.

One mum texts me and says she will come to pick them up the next day. When she arrives she says " I don't have any money on me" (it's eight pounds). Then she mentions the school name that our kids go to.

So split second decision and I had to hand over to her and say you can transfer it to me later.

what a bloody nerve. Well, I will never sell to her again.

Isn't it rude, entitled, and shameless ?

You fell for it.

Aussiegirl123456 · 07/09/2022 03:23

I’ve had so many people turn up to my house to collect things without money. If I’m in a good mood I just let them have it (if it’s only a small amount). Otherwise I tell them to come back when they have money.

BirdWatch · 07/09/2022 03:42

I guess I fell for a similar thing...buyer only had half the money on them. For some reason I said that was fine, and let her take it half price. Later on when I told someone they said it was a common ploy.
I think I just wanted it gone tbh.
I tried to sell it for months with nothing but no shows.

Good news is she sent her mother in law to come round and pay in the end.

But who goes out and not carries cash ?

I never have cash, only cards. BUT, for this, I would have gone to an ATM to top up the cash ( I try to remember to keep at home) so j could pay.

I never carry cash.

But if I bought something that I knew I had to pay cash for I would!

whatonearthh · 07/09/2022 05:18

Glad you got paid OP, I do agree it was a bit bizarre that she came to buy something from you without the means to pay for it! I probably would have said that I'll reserve the book for her for a couple of days until she has the cash

So she did pay in the end? Why lie in your title?

Zonder · 07/09/2022 05:26

I never have cash either. But I would ask if they use PayPal. I love PayPal.

This. The last time I had cash was feb 2020 and even then I was only withdrawing to pay for my nails.

however in your scenario I’d have let you know and asked for bacs or PP

What a non-story

HakuSansTan · 07/09/2022 05:38

So she paid...

More like a non-paragraph. A short one at that - all over in under an hour.

olympicsrock · 07/09/2022 06:00

What an overreaction. You needed to wait at least 2 days before assuming she wasn’t paying you.

butterflied · 07/09/2022 06:20

Complete non event. You could have refused to hand over the books. She paid in the end so your title is dramatic.

Don't give people stuff before they pay. It's not hard.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/09/2022 06:22

yes but she persuaded you,a gainst your better judgement
otoh she has someone else to do her bidding!

womaninatightspot · 07/09/2022 06:37

Hardly anyone carries cash anymore. My car broke down so had to get a taxi home with dc. I had my phone on me and pay for everything contactless normally.

Taxi didn’t take cards. So I did a quick bank transfer and sent him the money. Driver told me it happens a lot these days. I’ve since tucked away an emergency 40 quid but not used it for four months.

lightisnotwhite · 07/09/2022 06:47

Where are you that people are buying used books? People stick them on Facebook free giving or donation sites here.
She made a mistake which she rectified
You gave her the benefit of the doubt which is good.

Why the angst?

ladydoris · 07/09/2022 06:47

I almost never carry cash.

Jonagirl · 07/09/2022 06:50

So she paid for the books?? That's greatest drip feed ever 🙄

We have a monthly book swap in one of the community centres - people bring anything they're finished with and grab anything they fancy. Kids love it - although they keep retrieving ones that originally came from them in the first place!

SardineStitches · 07/09/2022 06:53

I never have cash but I'd have made a special trip to get some to buy something from someone. Wouldn't ever show up with none if I was specifically going to someone's house to purchase.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/09/2022 06:55

I rarely have cash. If I'd had to pay £10, I'd have gone to the ATM for a tenner, then tried to break it to get £8, which might take a while. It would be easier for me to pay £10 than £8!

What @lightisnotwhite said ⬆️. In my mind you come across really badly from your reaction to all this…..great example of the reactionary attitude of society today, really quite depressing.

PopPopPopP · 07/09/2022 07:00

Massive over reaction OP!!! She forgets her cash (who carries cash anymore!! Easily done). You kindly give her the books and ask her to pay later. She accepts. Mil pays you later.

And the issue is???

(This could easily be me! I'm always forgetting things!! Had no idea people.would.jidge me so harshly!!)
