Saw a documentary on Sky Arts on the making of the album Hysteria. Fascinating! And I never really appreciated until now just what a fantastic album it is. Here's an example:

Didn't they have a one armed drummer? My dh always throws that little nugget out as a warning to the dc's not to stick their arms out of car windows 😂

Ilovelindor · 06/09/2022 18:12

I heard Animal on the radio the other day and was instantly transported back to my youth. I was the same age as my youngest child when it came out!

StrikeandRobin · 06/09/2022 18:15

I saw them on their Hysteria tour. I was in high school. One of our teachers drove the minibus.
It was AMAZING!

MNCar · 06/09/2022 18:15

Love Def Leppard. Recently bought a T-shirt. Gone ages without hearing them then all I need is animal and I’m hooked again.

Funkyslippers · 06/09/2022 18:15

Yes their drummer has 1 arm! Doesn't seem to affect his playing. I've been driving my family and by playing their music non stop!

They did have a 1-armed drummer - he basically uses foot pedals for almost all his drums - incredible to watch.

I remember seeing them live and they were excellent. Was a bit disappointed to meet Joe Elliott after the gig and he was completely off his face!

Might check out the documentary. Love me a good rock documentary (will anything ever top Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, though?!)

Huge envy.

AnAussieMum · 06/09/2022 18:18

Yes I agree. I never really knew much off them until I met my partner. I went to my very first concert at 39 and saw them live 4 rows from the front.
AMAZING!
We are in Australia and there is a tribute band called slippery when wet that cover def leppard and bon Jovi.
If we have a kid free weekend we often look where they are and have driven 4 hours each way to see them once.
Both wearing our hysteria shirts of course 😁

Van34 · 06/09/2022 18:18

Love Def Leppard but was so disappointed when we saw them live just before covid. Joe Elliot didn't even try. Bloke just stood still hanging onto the mic stand while he sang Pour Some Sugar On Me. Never managed to get the crowd going.
If you like Def Leppard then you need to try Thunder. Cracking band and brilliant live.

Funkyslippers · 06/09/2022 18:20

MNCar Animal was always my favourite until I rediscovered all the other classics on the album like Pour Some Sugar On Me, Love Bites, Armageddon It, Hysteria, Rocket....! The documentary shows just how intricate their music is and how they just wanted to get it perfect before it was released.

Roselilly36 · 06/09/2022 18:21

That’s taken me back a few years, yes, awesome band.

Funkyslippers · 06/09/2022 18:22

Van34 oh that's very disappointing! I saw Thunder in 1990 supporting Heart (my fave band of all time), they were very good. Felt very old recently however when I saw them on TV. The lead singer used to have long brown hair - he's now completely bald!

Harrriet · 06/09/2022 18:23

I've seen them twice in Birmingham and at the Freddie Tribute. Love them, especially Photograph and Love Bites.

KyaClark · 06/09/2022 18:23

I love Photograph.

Pour Some Sugar On Me is my stripper song.

Antarcticant · 06/09/2022 18:25

YANBU. Happy memories - taped 'Hysteria' off a friend's album and never looked back.

Debbiejellinksy · 06/09/2022 18:35

You are not unreasonable in the slightlest! I'm not old enough to have seen them in their prime(humble brag? 😁) but I did see them in prior to covid too - presume same tour and have to agree with @Van34 disappointing kind of just like a well oiled machine doing its thing, going through the motions. But the Hysteria album itself is bloody fantastic!

HollywoodTease · 06/09/2022 18:44

My favourite band in the world 🙂

Been a fan since 1979, and am just back from a long weekend in LA to see them on the Stadium Tour with Motley Crue, Poison and Joan Jett 😎

FOJN · 06/09/2022 18:49

Haven't listened to any Def Leppard in ages but I remember a documentary about them years ago. The drummer lost his arm after two/three albums I think and the band waited until he had learned to play with his feet before recording and taking Hysteria on tour.

I've also been reminded about Thunder this evening too, off to listen to Back Street Symphony!

CocktailNapkin · 06/09/2022 18:51

Was a huge fan of them back in the day and their early albums are all classics.

Heard them on a live broadcast from an event about ten years ago and ho man, Joe Elliott had totally destroyed his voice, it didn't sound good.

The Metallica documentary is good - they all go to therapy!

StarCourt · 06/09/2022 19:01

@AFS1 nothing will ever top Metallica. But I've seen Def Leppard a few times too

StarCourt · 06/09/2022 19:02

@Van34 yes to Thunder seen those live a fair few times too

StarCourt · 06/09/2022 19:06

@Funkyslippers very first time I heard or saw Thunder was supporting Heart but thought it was 88

MrsAvocet · 06/09/2022 19:10

Thiugh I'm of the right vintage I was never really aware of them when I was young, but my 16 year old DS is a big fan and I've now got lots of Def Leppard tracks in my car. It's interesting really as he's very much into 90s and earlier rock and whilst I have introduced him to quite a lot of stuff I liked, he's introduced me to quite a lot of bands I was only vaguely aware of, or only knew a few songs from. Bon Jovi is another band I could only name a few hit singles from, but I've got quite into recently.

MarshaMelrose · 06/09/2022 19:13

I remember in college, we had a disco and when that finished at about 11/11.30 (innocent days), Def Leppard started to set up. It was late 70s and they were just starting out and I'd never heard of them. Place was full of leather clad rockers... and a few overwhelmed college students. Lol.

Our high school teacher used to drive the minibus and take us to concerts - I think one was the Hysteria tour in Nottingham.
If your school was in the Sheffield area it might have been the same teacher …
