Oh man...Def Leppard
Their songs, from 1981-1983, are really special to me.
I've only seen them once, as a matter of fact, it was September 6th, 1983. Wow! That was exactly 39 years ago! It seems like it was just yesterday.
My city was kinda far away from the big cities in my state of Texas (it's actually closer to San Diego, California than Houston, Texas) so them coming over to perform was a really big deal. It was the first time a band sold out within an hour of tickets going on sale and people were coming over from surrounding cities to see the band. In those days, you had to stand in line to secure a ticket. I remember that it was the first time I slept in a line overnight for concert tickets.
On the day of the gig, the city mayor awarded the band the "Key to the city". It is a civil honor that bestows the recipients the trust of the people of the city and encourages them to feel welcome to visit us again. It really was a huge deal for them to come.
The gig was amazing! I managed to get to the barriers at the front. I'll never forget Steve Clark standing in full glory right in front of me. I didn't appreciate the sweat but man, he was incredible! I'll never forget it.
Dear ole Joe Elliot made a major faux pas, the next night in Tuscon, Arizona. He was trying to bring more energy into the crowd by saying that the fans in the previous city were louder. He instead said, "I don't think you are as loud as those GREASY MEXICANS down in El Paso!". What the hell was he thinking?! Obviously, he wasn't. That got back to us in El Paso and there were a lot of very unhappy people. I was one of them. I am Mexican-American and that was not very nice to hear such an ugly ethnic slur and coming from the mouth of my beloved Joe Elliot. The city mayor was livid and demanded an apology and the "Key" to the city back. Eventually, dear ole Joe apologized and gave a significant amount of money to the "League of Latin American Citizens (LULAC)". The backlash was so bad that they didn't return to my hometown for the "Hysteria" tour, despite it being their biggest selling album.
I suppose I haven't really followed them since that fiasco but on the rare occasion that they do come on, I enjoy them so much. I think I'll put on "High 'n' Dry", my favorite album of theirs and pretend I'm 12-13 years old again.
