Saw a documentary on Sky Arts on the making of the album Hysteria. Fascinating! And I never really appreciated until now just what a fantastic album it is. Here's an example:

My first concert! Def Leppard 1987

Was a fan before Rick lost his arm, I was so happy they came back after that.

Bringin' on the Heartbreak is a fine piece of work ❤️

CocktailNapkin Joe Elliott sounded good on the documentary which I don't think is very old

StarCourt I definitely saw them support Heart in 1990 as it was Heart's Brigade tour

@Funkyslippers I checked! First time I saw Thunder was Nov 89 when they supported Aerosmith then in 1990 supporting Heart. Got it all mixed up it was so long ago

Morph22010 · 06/09/2022 20:20

Love def leppard have seen then a few times including when they played “in the round” where the stage was in the middle of the arena instead of at the front.

My favourite band in the world 🙂

Been a fan since 1979, and am just back from a long weekend in LA to see them on the Stadium Tour with Motley Crue, Poison and Joan Jett 😎

Jealous

Love Def Leppard and after the Taylor Hawkins concert will be revisiting a lot of old skool heavy - seeing Brian Johnson sing was incredible.

FairytaleofNewHampshire · 06/09/2022 20:25

You are definitely not being unreasonable.
I saw them at Wembley in 1988, they were brilliant.
I love Photograph, Gods of War and Animal.
Their new album is brilliant.
I always liked Steve Clarke, it was really sad when he died, I can't believe that was thirty one years ago.

stockpilingallthecheese · 06/09/2022 20:32

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 06/09/2022 20:34

YABU they are so overrated and Joe Elliott is a big bore.

YY to Thunder being ace though.

AlexandraJJ · 06/09/2022 20:35

I’ve liked them since my teens and saw them live a few years ago after waiting 30 years to see them. Cheap Trick we’re supporting too. Neither disappointed 🥰

elp30 · 06/09/2022 20:48

Oh man...Def Leppard

Their songs, from 1981-1983, are really special to me.
I've only seen them once, as a matter of fact, it was September 6th, 1983. Wow! That was exactly 39 years ago! It seems like it was just yesterday.

My city was kinda far away from the big cities in my state of Texas (it's actually closer to San Diego, California than Houston, Texas) so them coming over to perform was a really big deal. It was the first time a band sold out within an hour of tickets going on sale and people were coming over from surrounding cities to see the band. In those days, you had to stand in line to secure a ticket. I remember that it was the first time I slept in a line overnight for concert tickets.

On the day of the gig, the city mayor awarded the band the "Key to the city". It is a civil honor that bestows the recipients the trust of the people of the city and encourages them to feel welcome to visit us again. It really was a huge deal for them to come.

The gig was amazing! I managed to get to the barriers at the front. I'll never forget Steve Clark standing in full glory right in front of me. I didn't appreciate the sweat but man, he was incredible! I'll never forget it.

Dear ole Joe Elliot made a major faux pas, the next night in Tuscon, Arizona. He was trying to bring more energy into the crowd by saying that the fans in the previous city were louder. He instead said, "I don't think you are as loud as those GREASY MEXICANS down in El Paso!". What the hell was he thinking?! Obviously, he wasn't. That got back to us in El Paso and there were a lot of very unhappy people. I was one of them. I am Mexican-American and that was not very nice to hear such an ugly ethnic slur and coming from the mouth of my beloved Joe Elliot. The city mayor was livid and demanded an apology and the "Key" to the city back. Eventually, dear ole Joe apologized and gave a significant amount of money to the "League of Latin American Citizens (LULAC)". The backlash was so bad that they didn't return to my hometown for the "Hysteria" tour, despite it being their biggest selling album.

I suppose I haven't really followed them since that fiasco but on the rare occasion that they do come on, I enjoy them so much. I think I'll put on "High 'n' Dry", my favorite album of theirs and pretend I'm 12-13 years old again.

Funkyslippers · 06/09/2022 20:56

elp30 that's such a great story! Thanks for sharing it. In the documentary they say that they were really big in America for quite a while then when Animal was a hit in the UK it was like....yes! We finally made it in our home country after 10 years together!

I went to see them in Glasgow in the early 1990s with a boyfriend. I wasn't a fan, didnt know many of their songs and was not particularly impressed, I can remember feeling bored.

But fell in love with their music later and wish I could go back and see them again!

AFS1 · 06/09/2022 18:15

They did have a 1-armed drummer - he basically uses foot pedals for almost all his drums - incredible to watch.

I remember seeing them live and they were excellent. Was a bit disappointed to meet Joe Elliott after the gig and he was completely off his face!

Might check out the documentary. Love me a good rock documentary (will anything ever top Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, though?!)

I really liked SKOM, it showed them as human when that was a big risk considering their image. If you want to watch Metallica at the height of their mega fame madness you should watch 'A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica', from the early 90's.

Fun fact, Metallica's management also managed Def Leppard back in the day.

elp30 · 06/09/2022 22:05

@Funkyslippers

The gig was amazing! That will never change.

Too bad Joe had to be an idiot asshole with his shitty "greasy Mexican" comments. Can you imagine if he had said that ethnic slur in more recent times? He'd never live it down. He apologized only when he was pressed. Dickhead.

Oh well.

"Hit and Run" is playing on my Spotify. I have missed hearing it.

Pedallleur · 06/09/2022 22:16

Saw them as a support band and watched them work their way up. For all the highs there was adversity. Original gtr player Pete Willis was gone by album 2. Drink issues. Same thing killed the other gtr player Steve Clark a few years later. The drummer Rick Allen lost his arm in a car crash. Luckily technology allowed him to carry on. Bass player Rick Savage has Bells palsy. But they are a tight unit and still pull in the crowds. Always enjoyed watching them but not bothered these days.

Pedallleur · 06/09/2022 22:19

As @Farmageddon said they had great management. Peter Mensch who managed ACDC and The Scorpions took DL on and got them the big exposure. Mensch would go on to manage Metallica into one of the biggest acts on the planet.

StrikeandRobin · 07/09/2022 13:26

@Van34 I also loved Thunder, I saw them at Donnington Monsters of Rock one year. Google says it was 1990 as Whitesnake and Aerosmith were also there.

@Maray1967 not from your area, we obviously both had amazing teachers. Imagine the paperwork they would have to fill out to even contemplate this now?!

StarCourt · 07/09/2022 14:04

@StrikeandRobin ooh I'd forgotten MOR I was there that year too, huge Aerosmith fan

StrikeandRobin · 07/09/2022 14:28

It was amazing @StarCourt Happy days!

katscamel · 07/09/2022 14:36

Love Def Leppard...the drummer...Rick Allen had a guest spot at a Cinderella gig a million years ago....made my night as I had a bit of a thing for him.
Also agree Thunder were bloody good as well.
