AIBU?
Builder nightmare ....aibu?
wardrobess · 01/09/2022 11:16
I'm having work done to my house,I rent through housing association.
It's been one thing after the other.
I've been getting new bathroom /kitchen /rewire and windows.
First of all she didn't tell me I could get my things put into storage.
Friday they were meant to turn up and didn't and nobody told me.
Yesterday was full re wire...so as you can imagine holes everywhere.
Today plasterers were meant to be here to sort holes out.
3 turned up at 8 am and 2 left saying
I'm allergic to cats
The other one left with headache
The 1 remaining said he can't do it all by himself and will do 1 room.
He said they can't come back till next Friday as other houses to do.
So have left me for a week in this state.
I have kids and cats and exposed wires ,holes in ceiling /walls etc
Aibu to be annoyed?

I'd love to get what you're getting for free - which is probably why you're getting some of the bitchy replies OP and that really isn't fair. Yes she's lucky but that doesn't mean she also has to put up with shit.
It sounds like there's been some awful communication.
Get onto your HA, send them pics and see what they say.

Hapoydayz · 01/09/2022 12:48
You could have called the HA to understand what to expect and what was required of you. Your rent is so cheap! You can’t get a room share for that in most places!
So what? That doesn't mean she has to put up with stuff.
I pay £1500 a month for a two bed flat - that doesn't mean I deserve to be treated better than the OP because she pays less for a house.
bigbluebus · 01/09/2022 12:52
And what did the HA say when you rang them immediately after the tradesmen walked off the job?
Most HA's use larger contractors or multiple smaller ones. I'd have been demanding that they find someone else to do the job pronto citing health and safety - if indeed there are exposed wires which pose a risk to your DCs
wardrobess · 01/09/2022 12:53
The HA have said they can't do anything as it's the contractors job
The contractor has said they have a schedule of houses and tomorrow is next door ..Monday next door etc etc
So I have to wait till they have finished all other houses to come back to mine.

I pay full rent £480 a month
Being a housing association tenant or private or bought house doesn't mean you should be messed around.
If you had paid £1000 to builders and they didn't do the job on the day you said you wouldn't be angry ?
Oh that's fine just come back whenever...doubt it
Are you having to pay yourself for this work?
Bodgejobvendors · 01/09/2022 12:57
Sorry I’m another one who really doesn’t think you have much to complain about. Storage doesn’t sound necessary, the work is being done pretty quickly and you have been given funding to make good.
Do you have any experience finding your own tradespeople and getting work done? I think you’re wrongly imagining homeowners get some speedy gold plated service.
GodspeedJune · 01/09/2022 13:03
OP, ignore some of the sneering and perhaps jealous comments you’ve had. I work for a HA, specifically in complaints, and this is not a situation we would find acceptable. Put in a complaint straight away, it should go to a department who have more power and motivation to resolve this for you in a more acceptable time frame.

Hahaha! All the work you've had done is more than a grand... and to be left 8 days is nothing! We had our windows replaced (and spent over £20k) and a year later things are STILL not completed!!!
BelleMarionette · 01/09/2022 13:16
Building work very rarely goes to schedule, for a whole variety of reasons. Yabu to expect it will do.
It sounds great that you have a secure tenancy, very cheap rent, and will have a newly renovated house. Most don't have that, so will be understandably annoyed at you complaining about a short delay.

Assuming you've chosen to do this work though?
In HA, they decide when work is to be done, and what. Things have set amount of years before they need upgrading.
Bet OP didn't just decide she fancied a rewire.
SilverDragonfly1 · 01/09/2022 13:17
You're not being unreasonable. HA works are a complete shit show. They hire the cheapest tradesmen (ie, the least skilled and reliable), pay even them peanuts on a per job basis rather than time spent and have them doing multiple jobs at the same time so you can go days with nothing being done at all. Our bathroom was supposed to take 5 days. It probably did take about that long- spread over 6 weeks.
Additionally, the trades often have a similar attitude to posters here about tenants getting things 'for free'. No. I paid the HA, who paid you with my accumulated rent. If you can't be polite and respectful to your clients, look for another career.
Reminder: private rents are hugely inflated. HAs are non profit making, which is why their rents are sensible. Campaign for private rentals to be properly regulated and no one will need to be jealous of anyone.
Blowthemandown · 01/09/2022 13:28
@wardrobess I’d contact whoever’s running the project for your repairs and ask them if they can move the other jobs back a day rather than yours by over a week. Might not be possible but you could ask if they can get extra people on the job and say you’re worried about the holes/wiring? They might at least send someone to set your mind at rest.

So what if I haven't paid ? I didn't ask for any of these works to be carried out
I didn't choose them
I've had to take unpaid days off work just to be around to let them do the jobs.
I cant believe you are complaining about something being done in your home for free that will more than likely reduce your energy costs this coming winter.
