I'm having work done to my house,I rent through housing association.
It's been one thing after the other.
I've been getting new bathroom /kitchen /rewire and windows.
First of all she didn't tell me I could get my things put into storage.
Friday they were meant to turn up and didn't and nobody told me.
Yesterday was full re wire...so as you can imagine holes everywhere.
Today plasterers were meant to be here to sort holes out.
3 turned up at 8 am and 2 left saying
I'm allergic to cats
The other one left with headache
The 1 remaining said he can't do it all by himself and will do 1 room.
He said they can't come back till next Friday as other houses to do.
So have left me for a week in this state.
I have kids and cats and exposed wires ,holes in ceiling /walls etc
Aibu to be annoyed?

Yabu. With building works comes disruption. You could always leave a key if you're at work, you don't have to have the day off.

You can't just leave a key with HA. Most require you to be in to let them in, if you're not then tough, you don't get that appointment as you can't be desperate enough to stay in for it. We've had issues in the past with repairs needing doing but unable to afford the Time off work to let them do so. So just live with it until we can afford to take the time off/work from home if possible.

You are getting the work down for free, I’ve just paid £32k for a new kitchen and also had to live with all the mess.

But you own your house and will benefit from the equity that a new kitchen will create. Op rents , doesn't matter from who.

Unfortunately I'm unable to leave a key as every day is different contractors and every day they've asked me to sign off the work (which I've never had to do before but I've never had this much work so don't know

Contact the HA and ask to speak to the planners. They are the ones who will set the work for the contractors. Tell them that it is unacceptable to be left in this state and that you have young children. They may be able to send another team out to you sooner, or at least give you a time scale for the work to be completed

God there are some arseholes on here. OP is paying full rent to her HA and is getting a crap response from the builders, she shouldn't have to put up with that at all. OP get on to the housing association and see if they can help out. They may have something they can do.

This.
Ignore the spiteful posts.
in my experience you’ll need to be onto the HA every day .
Tjere is often a complete lack of communication between tradespeople, their managers and the HA. Often the tenant is the only one who knows the complete picture.
Keep on at the HA, of course there’s a reasonable level of disruption to be expected as you’re aware. It’s an entirely different situation where you’re at the mercy of other peoples’ actions and they can impact negatively if they’re fucking about.
And there is quite often a lot of “fucking about” when jobs go to the cheapest bidder.

The attitudes towards OP from the majority of posters on this thread is awful. I wonder if they'd be equally as snappy if OP wasn't with a Housing Association and was having work done on a house she owned 🤔

I cant believe you are complaining about something being done in your home for free that will more than likely reduce your energy costs this coming winter.

Are you for real?
it’s “free” yes but the house isn’t hers. She walks away from her home with nothing but her belongings not a pot of money.

plus the tenant pays rent. Rent is for things like this.

I feel like I’m talking to toddlers on here sometimes

Just buy your own place Op. Then, when you spend thousands on building work, you can dicate the terms of the build.

How utterly disgraceful & judgmental! You have no idea of OP's circumstances and are judging her because she's in a Housing Association property! How very dare you?!

I think we know the answer to that.

it’s getting worse and worse and it’s to me a microcosm of society at large . I just want to retreat to the Estonian island of women and weave for a living.

I'd love to get what you're getting for free - which is probably why you're getting some of the bitchy replies OP and that really isn't fair. Yes she's lucky but that doesn't mean she also has to put up with shit.

It sounds like there's been some awful communication.

Get onto your HA, send them pics and see what they say.

For free? Are you having a laugh?!?! OP is paying £480 a month!

Replying to the quote in here. Do you realise what it sounds like to people when you say you spent more that thirty grand on a kitchen?

To me it makes you sound like a twat.

Hi OP,

When you say bare wires, do you mean live wires poking out of the walls (unsafe) or completed wires that need plastering over (safe)?

It doesnt matter if it is HA, council, private rent or owned, there is a lot of work to be done and it needs doing. With a lot of work, comes a lot of snags when you have a lot of different trades working together. The fact of the matter is Op is benefitting from this work, they are not doing it for fun and Im pretty sure they are not delaying work on purpose ffs.

Just a reminder to those of you who own your homes - every penny you spend on mortgage payments and a percentage of the money you spend on works, will come back to you when you sell (and likely a great deal more on top!)

Those of us in HA homes have not only been Means Tested to be in a financial position to qualify. But also have ended up in such a position through no choice of our own!!!!
I was married with a child, a £55k pa career I fucking LOVED!!! and was in the process of applying for a mortgage when my husband died in a crash that also made me disabled for the rest of my life.
Suddenly I'm a disabled single parent unable to do ANY job and was therefore FORCED to claim universal credit & PIP and unable to pay the rent on our 3 bed semi (Obviously unable to qualify for a mortgage on UC). I therefore had to apply for social housing.

Just like that I've gone from a decent, well paid job & marriage, to grieving & being one of those so called 'job-dodging single mums' being spoken to like OP has on this thread....

My situation is NOT UNIQUE!!!!!

Sort your judgmental, closed little minds out, the lot of you!!!! Disgraceful behaviour from adults.

I am really sorry that happened to You but you are projecting. This has nothing to do with the the op. I am not judging ANYONE for where they live. Yes I own my home and I'm very lucky but I have also lived in private rent, council and on the damn streets so I wont be told I'm being judgemental or closed minded or fucking disgraceful!

I remember what it was like living in my council house with 3 young children draughty windows and doors, the electrics tripping randomnly, shite bathroom and kitchen and struggling to heat my home during winter as my heating system ran on solid fuel and I could not afford to bulk buy coal.

What I would have given for new windows electrics, bathroom and kitchen, regardless of how inconvenient it was!

My point is building work IS inconvenient and very rarely runs smoothly or on schedule!

YABU because I’m paying privately for mine and it’s still like this. I have had lots of work done over the years. We are lucky it’s mid summer and no heating is needed.

If you paid a plasterer and they said it was going to take 1 day
2 bugger off with a crap excuse and tell you they won't be back for over a week ...
You would be like
Yeah that's fine come back whenever...

Just ignore them OP. They think owning a property makes them in some way superior but it most definitely does not! I pity people who think like this. It's deep rooted unhappiness with a sprinkling of jealousy. Much like school bullies

This sounds pretty standard tbh.

We had our only bathroom done last year. Was supposed to take 3 weeks start to finish, ended up taking 14 weeks. That was fun. For 2 of those weeks we had no bath or shower at all.

Tradesmen don't turn up half the time, or they're trying to run between 4 jobs at the same time.

It's shit, but it's not out of the ordinary.
