To not be a huge fan of dogs..

I mean don't get me wrong I like dogs.. I'm not phobic of them and I think they are a wonderful and intelligent species. But I think to own one they are hard work, expensive and just too tying and too much effort to basically have an animal living with you. People put too much trust in them which is why children end up being bitten.. and people see them the same as their children when they're not.. they are an animal.
I dunno I probably ABU but I just don't see why we are such a nation of dog lovers and every dog lover is shocked if you say you're not.
People wouldn't be the same if you said you didn't like cats.. I prefer cats! They are much less demanding.
I think I'll get shot for this post..

YANBU

A friend recently had a baby and every time I go to visit it's so hard to enjoy ourselves because her yappy little fuck of a dog wouldn't stop, needing attention, refusing to go into his crate, refusing to stop barking so I couldn't hear a word she said. Awful.

It made me realise just how shit owning one could be.

Most then struggle to go away for long holidays if they don't have trusted dog sitters, the vet bills etc.

YANBU, and in my experience you are far from alone. I have a dog and plenty of people tell me they don’t love dogs. And they are a tie and hard work!

balalake · 30/08/2022 19:34

I prefer cats. I'd never have a dog living in my house. Though if anyone chooses a dog, well looked after, not aggressive, and loved, fine by me.

VeryQuaintIrene · 30/08/2022 19:36

YANBU. Though there are a few dogs I like, even they seem so dependent and needy and emotionally incontinent, unlike my loving but self-contained felines. And dogs don't purr!

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 30/08/2022 19:36

I have had dogs my whole life and I wouldn't change my dog for the world but I aren't having another one after him

I aren't fit enough for another. I will always have a cat though

PastaForLife · 30/08/2022 19:37

I feel the same about dogs and children other than my own: I’m not that keen 😆

Trulyweird1 · 30/08/2022 19:37

I love my dogs. They are friendly, kind and very cuddly.

But they are messy, they can be smelly , greedy and a tie. I have friends who don’t like them .
That’s fine with me. I am happy that we are different.

XenoBitch · 30/08/2022 19:37

My dog is my life. I would not be here if it was not for her. But then I know not everyone likes dogs, and that is ok too. I don't like children!

MissyB1 · 30/08/2022 19:38

Well you are free to prefer cats (totally pointless pets to me), and I’m free to vastly prefer dogs to people.

And I’ve never been bitten by a dog, but I have had a few bites from other people’s kids - I work in Early Years!

UWhatNow · 30/08/2022 19:38

Cats are just as bad - shit on the garden and kill birds. It’s inconsiderate pet owning human arseholes that are the main problem.

SlowingDownAndDown · 30/08/2022 19:40

I was with you until you said you like cats!
One problem with dogs is that they need a job. They were domesticated to perform various roles. Without a proper role, they get bored and possibly dangerous.

TooHotToTangoToo · 30/08/2022 19:42

I trust and like dogs much more than most people.

Hugasauras · 30/08/2022 19:43

I have a cat and a dog. I'd have a dog again definitely. I wouldn't have a cat, much as I love her. She's been far more damaging to the house than the dog!

Sunnyqueen · 30/08/2022 19:43

Right now I'm not the biggest fan of my own dog tbh so YANBU 😂 definitely could never own cats though, purely because of the litter tray smell and their idea of 'gifts'.

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 30/08/2022 19:45

My ddogs gave me a jolt into reality some time ago.
Ds has a very well off friend... I was invited in on collection from a play date. Sat having a Posh Coffee round a table bigger than my kitchen was quite awesome!
Seeing the 'stuff' the dc had was astounding tbh...
Drove home feeling quite a pauper and felt a bit sorry for ds.
Behind our quite shabby (not chic) front door I could hear much fuss...
As 16 paws eagerly awaited it opening!
Once home I felt very rich.
And much loved! As I know they make ds feel! Ddogs have a way of making us feel worthy. And loved.
Imo

erikbloodaxe · 30/08/2022 19:45

Dogs aren't the problem it's the people that own them. I spent most of my life involved with dogs (breeding, training and showing) and always had cats too. I'll never have another dog but I do have 3 cats.

Cats doesn't equal litter tray smell. Unless you have a fully indoor cat.

WifeMotherWorker · 30/08/2022 19:47

If an owner puts in the effort with training and discipline most breeds of dogs are amazing, loyal and rewarding pets!

I’m not a huge fan of cats! They are pointless pets but good for people who can’t be bothered. Cats are not remotely loyal and will go to anyone that feeds them, they shit everywhere where owners take no responsibility (my garden is testament to that, it’s vile and fucking infuriating), they kill so much native wildlife and get run over because they are free roaming and feral!

SmallPrawnEnergy · 30/08/2022 19:49

Of course YANBU for not liking something. We’re all different and allowed to like different things. I’m fine with dogs, love most. Hate cats, like a select few. If someone had a problem with my person preferences that’s up to them. Do you need the internets validation on this?

modgepodge · 30/08/2022 19:49

I dislike dogs. I’ve never been keen, hate when they jump up at you, lick you and bark, plus most people who own them have houses that smell like dog. Yuck. At the moment I particularly dislike them as my daughter is terrified, so every trip to the park is stressful with her crying and running away or freezing anytime she sees one. And they are EVERYWHERE now. The majority of my friends have one which limits me going to their house (as my daughter gets stressed), them coming to my house or meeting up (as the dog can’t be left alone for too long). Grrrr!!!

sorry, feeling particularly anti dog at the moment and this thread has given me a place to vent 😂

Countingdowntodecember · 30/08/2022 19:51

YANBU. I love my dog and the downsides are 100% worth it for me. I don’t judge people who feel differently though!

I like cats but would never have one myself. I couldn’t cope with a litter tray or the ‘gifts’ they bring (though it’s nice that they care enough to bring you a half dead mouse, I guess?).

I wouldn’t be able to decide between keeping them inside and feeling a bit guilty or letting them roam but being worried about them getting knocked down either 🤷‍♀️.

WonkasBooboofixer · 30/08/2022 19:51

My dog saved my life. I used to hope that I would die in my sleep every night. He gave me a reason to get up everyday. Now I have 2. You can not like dogs and that's OK. They are occasionally smelly, needy, fussy, barky, hairy, greedy and they can be utterly obnoxious in varying degrees. But they also know what it is to just be in the here and now and sometimes we need that.

Twizbe · 30/08/2022 19:51

YANBU. I like dogs but I don't love them.

I'm not liking the trend now to never leave them alone and to have to take them everywhere. I went past Starbucks today and there was a dog sat on one of the chairs inside! Yuk! What happened to dogs (obvious exception for guide dogs) not being allowed in food establishments?

nokitchen · 30/08/2022 19:53

I agree. I've owned dogs all my life but as I've got older having an animal dependent on me all the time has proved too much. Once our last one died we breAthed a big sigh of relief. He was a nice old boy and we loved him, but life is much easier now. We can go out for the day without arranging sitters and a vacuumed house stays clean

mathanxiety · 30/08/2022 19:53

YANBU.

I don't get them as pets. They're perfectly fine in the abstract, but I personally don't see the attractiveness of a creature who will always be a toddler in terms of emotional, psychological, and physical needs. Been there, done that with actual toddlers, and imo one of the best parts of human toddlers is that they grow out of that stage.
