To not be a huge fan of dogs..

I mean don't get me wrong I like dogs.. I'm not phobic of them and I think they are a wonderful and intelligent species. But I think to own one they are hard work, expensive and just too tying and too much effort to basically have an animal living with you. People put too much trust in them which is why children end up being bitten.. and people see them the same as their children when they're not.. they are an animal.
I dunno I probably ABU but I just don't see why we are such a nation of dog lovers and every dog lover is shocked if you say you're not.
People wouldn't be the same if you said you didn't like cats.. I prefer cats! They are much less demanding.
I think I'll get shot for this post..

I can’t help judging. Dogs are (usually) so friendly, cute, funny, innocent and loving and I don’t see how anyone could look into their eyes and not melt. I actually find it bizarre that so many people ignore my very cute dogs and feel quite heartbroken for one of them because he loves everyone. . That said, I’m wary of a bigger dogs and of course now I own my own dogs, I have to deal with them approaching us.

Also, I hate to tell you this but children (and adults) are animals and when you own a dog you start to realise just how similar dogs are to humans.

This is the type of nuts dog obsessive behaviour. Heartbroken because people who don’t like dogs ignore your dog? Maybe they don’t find it cute. Maybe they think it stinks or they just can’t be bothered cooing over somebody else’s pet.

I had a dog by the way. Loved her. Sad when she passed. Never ‘heartbroken’ or thinking people are bizarre because strangers in a park didn’t acknowledge her because why would they?

waterlego · 30/08/2022 21:08

This is a bit of an odd question really. Of course YANBU!

I mean, I’m not a huge fan of Christmas, AIBU?

I adore my dog and genuinely often think of him as my best friend (because I’m a bit of sad bastard with not many actual friends 😬) He is very perceptive and knows when I’m sad or anxious and snuggles up to me to make me feel better. I also have two cats and they couldn’t give less of a shit about me 😂

Dogface is no trouble at all and I really miss him when we go away on holiday. He never begs for food, jumps up at people or licks people. He leaves hair everywhere which is a nuisance but the cats shed far more hair than he does. They also bring in mice and birds and eat everything except for some of the tiny organs which they leave lying on the floor for me to find.

I don’t love all dogs (not a big fan of toy dogs, designer dogs, flat-faced dogs or spaniels) but I do love mine.

miseryguts1988 · 30/08/2022 21:09

@Kanaloa Exactly! I find my baby in my eyes very cute.. but I'm not heartbroken when every stranger doesn't coo over her!

I'm confused as to the point of this post? Who cares if you like it do or don't like dogs/cats/snakes/birds? You like what you like and that's fine.

We recently had to have our 16 year old rescue put to sleep. I've recently gotten over the devastation and won't be getting another. Didn't like dogs to begin with but he had such a traumatic home life when we got him at 6 that I couldn't say no. He was great and I will miss him terribly for quite some time, I'd imagine.

Although I bloody hated having dog hair in my house all the time. I would hoover twice per day, at least. The muddy paws after walks drove me to insanity. Rubbing himself off walls and making the whole house look grubby was god awful. Barking when he heard a noise and waking up the babies was also god awful. But he was a real ray of sunshine.

Dog owners I find are generally horrendous. We can't go to a park without some large dog bounding towards my toddler. I don't take my children to parks unless my husband is with me for this exact reason. We had such fun at a local park recently until my toddler literally fell into a pile of dog shit. I'm fucking furious even thinking about it now.

There was a dog owner in my new build estate. Lovely houses and with good people. One lady took her dog into a play park (despite there being copious amounts of green space) for her dog to use as a toilet. I was honestly astounded. When confronted, she told me that she pays the same factor fees as me so her dogs could go where they liked.

So I guess I don't dislike dogs as such. But I bloody hate entitled dog owners.

Suzi888 · 30/08/2022 21:17

I dislike humans- selfish, greedy and often cruel. I love my dog though.

miseryguts1988 · 30/08/2022 21:18

@Suzi888 I'm not a huge fan of humans either but 2 came out of my vagina so I suppose I better keep them 😂

I am besotted with my gorgeous needy silky mystical to good for this world doggies. They are the best company.
I love cats too, but could never own one as all I see on Facebook are posted about cats going missing or a dead cat found at side of road.

Yup- I’ve got one too lol

I once confessed to a group of friends that I don't really like any domesticated animals, not a fan of farm animals or birds either and they all felt that was really weird so I've never mentioned it again. I've been on safari which was amazing but I find it hard to understand or relate to the anthropomorphizing of domestic animals.

Because dog owners, especially Mumsnet dog owners, seem to be extremely overly precious about their pets and take massive offensive if someone says

  1. they don't like dogs
  2. they are a bit meh about dogs
  3. they don't want dogs anywhere near them
  4. people can get absolutely obsessive about dogs in a way that's rarely seen about any other animal
  5. if you have a dog your house smells of dog
  6. dog barking is excessively irritating even if it is only 2 minutes at 6.30am. That's enough to wake a neighbour up an hour early and mar their day.
  7. the rescue don't buy mantra is beyond irritating when you are trying to rescue a dog and you don't get any matches
  8. dogs kill a significant number of people and smaller pets
  9. too many dog owners bend the rules about disposing of dog poo
  10. they want to have a drink in a pub or meal in a cafe without a dog in there

etc etc

Apl · 30/08/2022 21:40

Yanbu. Cats are awesome. Dogs are cool on a walk but one in my house all day would drive me mad.

But but what’s the point of most of mumsnet?!

If you always look for “the point” most things in life are gonna disappoint you 🤣

BettyBoomerangBoo · 30/08/2022 21:43

YANBU. I can't stand them, and can't understand anyone wanting to clear up another animal's shit for several years, contaminate their house with stench, fur, dander, slobber, poo particles (exposed mutt anus, anyone?), the huge cost, the bind, the irritating yapping and/or barking, the slobbery panting and rank breath, the draining presence of them just being around. Can think of a million better things to spend money on.

I believe dog owners have been brainwashed into thinking a home is not complete without a mutt. I think they are mugs. It's always socially inept people who have them, generally confirmed with their comments about how they prefer dogs to people. And then blethering on about how much their dogs love them, and how loyal they are. Dogs love the food you give them. They'd gladly go wherever the food is. Fools.

Dog owners aren't animal lovers - zero consideration given to the thousands of animals slaughtered to go into petfood tins. Yet they always claim to love animals.

That’s me done🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

To be fair @BettyBoomerangBoo most of what you’ve listed applies to humans too!

allboysherebutme · 30/08/2022 22:09

Dogs are great if the people that own them know how to train them properly. X

No one in my house scrapes their anus along the carpet when their anal glands need emptying. Nor do we roll around in fox shit and then rub up on people.

BabyShaark · 30/08/2022 22:49

I don’t like dogs. That hasn’t shocked anyone so far. I don’t find them cute, they smell and they have big teeth. I don’t know what there is to like.

On the other hand I also know many people who don’t like cats and that hasn’t shocked me (or anyone else).

i wouldn’t exactly feel offended if someone else doesn’t like my pet.

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 30/08/2022 22:53

YANBU. And I have two dogs that adore.

However they are smelly and gross and hard work and I never forget that however adorable and cuddly they are, they are, in fact, dogs. Not people. I think a lot of dog owners struggle with that.

Thedishonthecoffeetable · 30/08/2022 22:54

I quite like dogs but wouldn't want to own one. I belong to a few motorhome groups and the venomous replies when people ask for recommendations for a dog free site actually scare me, you can actually visualise the posters frothing at the mouth while they are saying what about child free sites. Each to their own, OK you love dogs, others don't their choice.

Although saying this, was at a festival last weekend and loads of dogs about, one jumped up my arm and scratched me badly, drawing blood, sorry the owner said, he's a bit stressed...well don't take him to a fucking festival then where's there's thousands of people and loud music!

Imissmoominmama · 30/08/2022 22:59

I love dogs, cats ^and* children.

TinyLittleBug · 30/08/2022 23:00

PP have said this already but it’s not dogs that are the problem it’s the owners.

Not very intelligent, don’t do their research on breeds, can’t be arsed to train their dog, it’s no wonder the dogs don’t behave.

I also can’t stand the “don’t worry he’s friendly” brigade. I do not want your dog to sniff me / lick me / jump up at me thanks.
These people genuinely, for the life of them, cannot understand why you aren’t delighted by their dog.
They claim to be dog lovers but don’t give their dog the attention and care it needs. Ironically, I’d argue I’m actually more of a dog lover than they are, because I’m not buying a dog on a whim and then not looking after it properly.

Pickingmyselfup · 30/08/2022 23:01

I don't mind them but I have only met a couple who don't smell, some of them stink!

I probably won't ever have one, I'm too lazy and hate the cold, the wet, early mornings and I don't want to not be able to go somewhere for the day.

Never say never though, maybe in retirement but it would be a small toy dog.

I much prefer cats and would prefer mine not to roam. Litter trays don't bother me and neither does catifying the house/garden. Plus they purr which is the best sound.

XSnoe · 30/08/2022 23:04

if you have a dog your house smells of dog

I don't agree with this though. Let me preface by saying I grew up with a singular cat, until age 12 when we got a dog. I moved out at 17 and haven't had a dog since. My home doesn't smell like dog because I don't have one so I'm not noseblind to it. Some houses I visit with a dog in reeks of dog, but I have a few friends with dogs who I wouldn't think had dogs just from the smell. Whenever I used to go back and visit my family home while they sti had a dog, I couldn't smell dog (the family friend's car however... Ew).

I think the smell depends on how regularly you clean your home and dog tbh. My family home I visited never had dog hair anywhere as had someone at home all day who would vaccuum twice a day, it was spotless. Dog wasn't allowed on beds or sofas etc. Washed regularly. Whereas I know the ones that really reek simply do not clean up the dog hair or their dog as much as they should. You would sit on their sofa and it would smell of dog and covered in hair.

Scottishskifun · 30/08/2022 23:07

My dog is a pain in the bum but I love her dearly and she's a neurotic rescue sight hound. But I know my breeds and have worked with dogs when younger at a rescue centre. She's great with kids but I don't leave her alone so if I'm cooking for instance then she is in a different room to my DCs usually asleep!

I don't think everyone should love dogs it's a personal thing. Dog owners also struggle with some of the lockdown puppy parade who have failed to socialise or train their dogs properly it's not just people without dogs!
