Who was in the right lane? Picture included

Hi everyone.

I use this roundabout almost daily. I was where the yellow line was. In the right hand lane to turn right around the roundabout 3rd exit.

The left lane has arrows for 1st exit and straight over (second exit) and right lane for 3rd and 4th. Well that's how I read it anyway! So I pulled out and a big angry man in a big angry van was in the LEFT lane but going for the same exit as me (3rd) He the got up my arse flashed me when I managed to get in front of him and then we came level at another roundabout down the road and he called me a blonde bitch (naiiiice).

Light hearted really, doesn't bother me. But AIBU to think I'm using the right lane? Seems pretty obvious to me but prepared to be told I'm wrong if so!

Also worth pointing the exit I was going for didn't have those bottleneck exits where 2 lanes could merge. Just the one lane.

its after 12 o’clock and with the additional information I agree you were the one in the correct lane. He’ll no doubt be still fuming about it so take comfort in that haha

feedthepeony · 29/08/2022 12:30

The left lane for left and straight over - he was in the wrong lane

girlmom21 · 29/08/2022 12:30

You were right. He was wrong.

superram · 29/08/2022 12:31

According to the big white arrow on the ground, he was in the wrong lane. The only way he could have been correct is if it was a bigger roundabout with two lanes on the exit and you cut him up.

That's what I thought. It couldn't be more obvious! But hey ho.

It was a one lane exit. You can't see it under the trees but next to the chevrons it's one lane. People get rather stressed on the road don't they!

You are right, the correct lane is the right hand one.

I have one of these roundabouts near my house and I would say it is 50/50 people getting off at the 3rd exit in the left and right lanes. The left hand lane users are always completely oblivious/outright rude that they are wrong though.

vivainsomnia · 29/08/2022 12:42

Was he coming from the same road though? Could he have been coming from the 1st exit and going straight?

Yes he was coming from the same road. I was in the right hand lane with the yellow line. He was in the left lane (with the markings of left and straight over) same road.

It's just basic road sense isn't it.
The signs clearly state what lane to be in but they will still argue when they're wrong!

Happens all the time on this roundabout and normally people just let whoever in and get on with it. First time I've been called a name for being in the correct lane though Grin

He should have followed the massive arrows on the ground

SparklyEyes1 · 29/08/2022 13:05

You were in the wrong lane. This is a quirky roundabout, but the left lane is clearly marked for the A327 which is the third exit. It's because it used to only be straight over to the A327 and right to the tip. The costco and airport exits were added later.

busywheels · 29/08/2022 13:13

I use this roundabout daily. As @SparklyEyes1 says A327 is left hand lane, so you were in wrong lane. People often take the wrong lane, so I often allow for someone pulling over from the right hand lane when using this roundabout.

Helpyou · 29/08/2022 13:14

I agree with @SparklyEyes1 that you were in the wrong, sorry. I've been on Google maps too and the road is written out on the lane. He shouldn't have got angry though. But it's important to always read the road and signs. It isn't always a case of past 12 o clock on a roundabout.

LIZS · 29/08/2022 13:20

Right is correct until you pass the second exit and indicate then move to left.

WeepingSomnambulist · 29/08/2022 13:25

When seeing the actual road markings, you were in the wrong daily. Which means you're using the wrong lane daily. Maybe stop that.

Getoff · 29/08/2022 13:28

The road marking of A327 mean he was OK to be in the lane he was in, but that doesn't mean the OP was wrong to be in the lane she was in.

At least I don't think so, willing to be corrected by anyone who can link to something that says otherwise. That sign is far to late for anyone to change lanes, so it's unreasonable if it's meant to be telling others where they need to be. I'm don't think markings in lanes are even intended to be read by people in other lanes, they are markings for people using the lane in question.

Getoff · 29/08/2022 13:32

Actually, if you read the right marking in conjunction with the left one, then the interpretation she was in the wrong lane makes more sense.

It's a bit of an odd junction, I think it needs more signs. Or maybe some lane markings within the junction.

ilovebeigefood · 29/08/2022 13:37

Okay, willing to be corrected if I'm wrong. Looks like I am wrong now!

But why does the A327 lane not have a right arrow then, as left and straight on doesn't equate to the A327 which is a right turning.

It only has left and straight on in the left lane. No right arrow, so surely it would have A327 and a right arrow seeing as the 3rd exit A327 is after 12 o clock, therefore it's not left or straight over?

I'm more confused now Grin
So the right hand lane is only used for the 4th exit?

OP posts:
Saisong · 29/08/2022 13:42

I use this regularly and as a PP indicated the A327 used to be the only option other than full right to the tip. So it was straight on, even though slightly to the right. Maybe it needs better signage though as people are always making the same mistake. He didn't need to be a dick about it though.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 29/08/2022 13:45

Christ no wonder we have so many fucking accidents in this country- what a ridiculous arrangement! Left hand land for the first 3 exits even though the 3rd exit is clearly all the way the the right? Madness!
And how would you know this if you didn't know the roundabout and traffic was covering the (not very explanatory) markings on the road? Confused

WTHamIreading · 29/08/2022 13:47

There is a roundabout exactly like this on my way to work. It drives me mad that aggressive blokes (it’s always blokes) can’t manage to see the HUGE arrows painted on the road and use the correct lane.

NoSquirrels · 29/08/2022 13:48

I’d have used the lane you did, OP, and been very sure he was wrong too - as we’re the majority of respondents who don’t know the history of the road.

SparklyEyes1 · 29/08/2022 13:51

Yep, the right hand lane is only for the 4th exit (to the tip) or back up towards town. They just confused things when they added the costco and the airport roads 🙂

Emptyandsad · 29/08/2022 13:52

With roundabouts you give way to traffic on your right. So when you enter the roundabout you give way to traffic already on it, coming round towards you and then, when you're on the roundabout (if it has 2 lanes going round it) , you give way to traffic in the right lane, to allow them to exit in front of you.
