Who was in the right lane? Picture included

Hi everyone.

I use this roundabout almost daily. I was where the yellow line was. In the right hand lane to turn right around the roundabout 3rd exit.

The left lane has arrows for 1st exit and straight over (second exit) and right lane for 3rd and 4th. Well that's how I read it anyway! So I pulled out and a big angry man in a big angry van was in the LEFT lane but going for the same exit as me (3rd) He the got up my arse flashed me when I managed to get in front of him and then we came level at another roundabout down the road and he called me a blonde bitch (naiiiice).

Light hearted really, doesn't bother me. But AIBU to think I'm using the right lane? Seems pretty obvious to me but prepared to be told I'm wrong if so!

Also worth pointing the exit I was going for didn't have those bottleneck exits where 2 lanes could merge. Just the one lane.

I was in an accident like that once. I was you and funnily enough other driver was a huffy man in a van in left lane who hit my back left end trying to (forcefully) take the same single lane exit. Insurance said it 100% his fault. So you were right.

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 29/08/2022 22:53

Neither exit 2 or 3 are exactly straight on but the road name continues from where you entered to exit 3 so I would take that as straight on. I think the road markings are poor though and probably confusing to many.

Dadaya · 29/08/2022 23:02

“Straight on” is “continuing on the same road”. It doesn’t necessarily mean the exit is exactly at 12 o clock. The road markings make it clear that the left lane is for continuing on the 327, regardless of the exact position of the exit. Sorry but I think you were wrong here.

allboysherebutme · 29/08/2022 23:17

I'd say you were right. X

MissMaple82 · 29/08/2022 23:22

I think its blatantly obviously you should have been in the left lane

I was always told that the right hand lane is for the right turn only unless it's marked otherwise.

I think you were in the wrong.

This is what I was told also and is how I remember it

HaveringWavering · 29/08/2022 23:50

To those who k ow this roundabout- would you use the left Lane but indicate right? Or not indicate at all?

SparklyEyes1 · 29/08/2022 23:54

@HaveringWavering you would not indicate at all until you have passed the airport access road which is the one before the A327 as you are going straight over.

What happens if people don't know that exit is called the A327? Apart from the road markings there's no sign on that road that the 3rd exit is the A327 - there's always cars covering those road markings anyway so I just use common sense to get in the right lane to go round the roundabout to the right, taking the 3rd exit.

I am in the wrong then if we're going by the road I exited on was the A327, but the road markings are outdated as the 3rd exit is clearly to the right of the roundabout. Not left or straight on as per the road arrows.

Lesson learnt though I'll use the left lane next time!

There's a signpost before the roundabout which shows that exit is the A327. Then closer to the roundabout is the sign which shows more local destinations.

You were in the wrong. To continue onto Elles Road from Elles Road, you are going straight, not right.

Plus, it’s actually written on the road…

BadNomad · 30/08/2022 00:07

As others have said, the sign leading up to the roundabout tells you everything. You were aiming for the A327 to Reading and therefore should have been in the lane that says "A327" which was the left lane. The airport isn't a road and doesn't count as a "straight on" exit. It is just a turn off on the roundabout, as are the other business parks.

Bit late finally posting the reply i'd prepared so some have already caught most points

He was in the correct lane, you were unfortunately not. Elles road (and your 3rd exit) is the A327 and the legend painted on the road, on left hand approaching lane, shows a left/straight arrow with A327 below it. You're effectively continuing straight-ish on on the same road.
Additionally the exit from the roundabout onto exit 3 has the right hand lane blocked off by painted hatch markings suggesting that only the outer ring of the roundabout should exit onto here as the inner ring would/should exit into the prohibited right hand lane.

Pics attached.

That being said, if you don't know the number/name of the road (or the area too well), only that you want exit 3 of 4 possible exits (without doubling back upon yourself) it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect to use the rightmost of the 2 lanes as you did.
Further defence to you is the A327 legend on the road is at the 2nd set of arrow markings, almost right at the roundabout, the first set has no such info to help you get into the correct lane and the 2 signs on approach are of no use in determining which lane, if anything they are detrimental.

You made a simple (and not unreasonable error considering the inadequate information provided to you) and he was very much a dick for having a go at you.

To further complicate things, exit 2 from the roundabout takes you to gates blocking the road (not that most would know this, nor do the road signs let on) so there really are only 3 real exits not 4 to use.

Google streetview link for those that want to play

Thank you. This is really helpful!

@WeepingSomnambulist
But she was wrong. She was the one swerving from the wrong lane. The lanes are marked and people who recognised the roundabout have been on to explain.

Woahhh hang on. Who said I was swerving?
He was in a big van. I was in a much quicker car. I indicated left to go over with about 2 card width behind me. THEN he sped up and got up my arse and later swore at me.
I've admitted that I was in the wrong lane, but don't make swerving accusations. Just because someone made a mistake it doesn't make them a reckless driver.

I indicated, I had enough room, I didn't swerve and I didn't exceed the speed limit. Yes I was in the wrong lane but I did everything correctly to correct it. HE then tailgated and swore. At the end of the day if I didn't have enough room to get in I would've just gone round the roundabout again..

He was being a bullying asshole, sometimes people end up in the wrong lane and need to correct it, I have no doubt in the world that guy has been in the wrong lane more than one time in his driving life. He was being a dickhead

Hope your car is still light hearted after her abuse from the big angry van 😊
