To ask people to stop talking about energy bills on AIBU?

SickandTiredofHearingAboutEnergyBills · 27/08/2022 09:00

Just a heads up - You are not unreasonable to be alarmed about your energy bill!

But I am sick and tired of hearing about it. I've done what I can to sort my bill out. And I don't want to be reminded every two bloody minutes! There is a cost of living board you can use. It will become busier and more helpful if you all went there to use it!

This winter is going to get harder and every second thread will be some complaint about energy bills at this rate.

Your need for high traffic to talk about YOUR bill does not trump everyone elses need from a space away from it!

My irony alert is pinging like mad here. Feel free to just hide threads!

SquirrelSoShiny · 27/08/2022 09:03

But yes cost of living board will I hope be helpful to people. Maybe MN will move some posts there longer term, who knows.

Anothernamechangeplease · 27/08/2022 09:06

Well, aside from the fact that you have just started another thread, no, you can't dictate what other people want to post about or where they post it. AIBU is a general forum that allows posts on any issues with an AIBU question. If you don't want to read them, scroll on.

Whenever there is a big news story - covid, Ukraine, now energy - there are always people on these boards trying to dictate how or where others should discuss these important issues. Maybe we need to ask MN to create a "safe space" board where people are only allowed to talk about mindless trivia, while allowing the rest of us to carry on discussing important and/or interesting topics without others trying to censor those discussions.

Hibye23289 · 27/08/2022 09:07

You've done the same!

chillipenguin · 27/08/2022 09:10

It's just like with the COVID. People are worried. Don't be so mean.

EkinWho · 27/08/2022 09:10

YABU

SmallPrawnEnergy · 27/08/2022 09:10

You’re not in charge of every single for poster. Don’t like it, make you’re own forum and play god over there.

rainbowandglitter · 27/08/2022 09:11

Agree op. Every other thread on here is the same. Why not all talk on the same thread about it?

AnnaFri · 27/08/2022 09:11

You can just scroll past you know?

GoneWithTheWine1 · 27/08/2022 09:12

Hamburger.

GoneWithTheWine1 · 27/08/2022 09:13

*yanbu. 😭😂

*yanbu. 😭😂

I was soooo confused!

MeanMrMustardSeed · 27/08/2022 09:16

Hibye23289 · 27/08/2022 09:07

You've done the same!

I don’t think so. OP is posting about the use of AIBU, not about the energy bills issue.

I agree, OP. If people continue to post about the COL crisis in AIBU in such numbers, people will stop coming to the site in their spare 15 mins of downtime as they won’t be able to face the constant reminders of the issue.

ThisisCollie2022 · 27/08/2022 09:16

Laughing so much at hamburger!!

OP it is annoying BUT you've done EXACTLY the same thing so YABU for that alone.

A lot of the people panicking (quite rightly) in AIBU will probably be new posters who are unaware of a "cost of living" section.

JimmiChoux · 27/08/2022 09:16

Quite frankly, the energy crisis is unreasonable.

SickandTiredofHearingAboutEnergyBills · 27/08/2022 09:16

I know I have done the same! It was impossible to talk about it without mentioning it. But right now it is busy, come winter it will be very, very busy. There is a space for it on the cost of living board and I don't want to have to leave mumsnet because I am sick of people starting threads about "their" bill!

People post on AIBU for traffic. So a lot of people see the thread title. I won't be using mumsnet if it keeps up, and I know nobody cares if I go, but I doubt I will be the only one who does.. Don't worry I won't let the door hit me on the way out, i know I won't be missed etc...

OP posts:
ThisisCollie2022 · 27/08/2022 09:18

I won't be using mumsnet if it keeps up

🤣 well ok then

O11 · 27/08/2022 09:22

No, as a PP suggested, what is needed is a separate board where current affairs can't be discussed. It could be called "head in the sand" or similar. You can camp out over there and let people carry on discussing the important stuff.

SickandTiredofHearingAboutEnergyBills · 27/08/2022 09:23

JimmiChoux · 27/08/2022 09:16

Quite frankly, the energy crisis is unreasonable.

Talk about THAT then.

OP posts:
Anothernamechangeplease · 27/08/2022 09:24

People said that there would be a mass exodus because of the Brexit threads. Then the same about all the covid threads. Then there was going to be another mass exodus because of the Ukraine war threads.

Really, it's astonishing that there are any of us left to post about energy issues.Wink

VladmirsPoutine · 27/08/2022 09:24

Yabu to be the AIBU police. Just don't click the thread or if it's ambiguous just click out of it. People are rightfully worried and I think it's overall a good thing that so many are being so vocal about it because only that way we can collectively do something about it.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 27/08/2022 09:25

Great minds! I didn't see your thread but agree and have made a post in site stuff. Please go and post your support on there and then all threads can go in the cost of living topic.

Anothernamechangeplease · 27/08/2022 09:26

On the plus side, if you start a rival site where people can only talk about Mindless Trivia That Definitely Won't Upset Anyone, there will apparently be an army of ex-MNers who will be eager to join.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 27/08/2022 09:27

And I don't think the OP has done the same. She at least has an AIBU question.

ApolloandDaphne · 27/08/2022 09:28

I get what OP is saying. It's not that they want people to stop talking about it, it's just that AIBU is high traffic and not everyone wants to see endless threads about utility bills.

It's like with Covid when many threads were about that. Then MNHQ made a Covid topic where people could post their questions and concerns. Many, like myself, were than able to hide that topic and not be bombarded with Covid at every turn.

I am not interested in someone else's fuel bills and would rather these questions were posted in the relevant place. Cost of living seems a reasonable place to locate all such threads together and where support threads can be started about fuel, food and other general concerns.
