Literally penny pinching - need prices from Lidl

Dalint · 24/08/2022 21:54

apologies in advance if you have read this post lol
I tried to get to Lidl today but the bus decided not to run. 😏And the arseholes are going on strike too I believe. Wonderful.

I pay for a Tesco delivery subscription as I don't drive but I'm actually down to pennies these days.
Can anyone tell me the price of the following three items from Lidl (I don't have Aldi near so I don't need those prices).
Iceberg lettuce
Cucumber
Stewing beef (lean diced beef) - I've 600g in basket (£10.50/kilo)

I used to know the price of everything but my memory is shot and now everything is jumping extortionately and I know that the next thing to go will be my will to live lol.
The tesco delivery is tomorrow so I only have 2 hours to decide before it's locked in and when it's pennies for heating for the winter or a penny here or there to a company, I no longer have the luxury.
Jesus Christ, but this is awful.

I sound so petty but I'm actually this broke.

Cheapest cucumber is 60p but if it's out ot stock the organic one is over £1

Lilylizard · 24/08/2022 21:57

If you're down to pennies just don't get the iceberg lettuce as it's pretty much just utterly lacking in nutrition

Hymnulop · 24/08/2022 21:58

Food bank? If you're really struggling. You could try growing some lettuce if you've got spare pots or whatever? Sorry I don't shop at Lidl so not sure on prices but I'm sure in the main it's cheaper than tesco.

chillipenguin · 24/08/2022 21:59

Unless you have a rabbit ditch the lettuce.

I'm a strange nutter as I love lettuce.

thanks for the links but I have money to spend on food and I'd prefer that someone with children got food from food banks rather than me and I don't eat much anyway so I'd be a fraud asking for food. I have about 20 a week for food (I'm a smoker and that is my choice). I'd starve to death rather than give up my tobacco as it is my only pleasure in life so you can kick me all you like but I don't care.

I think I'll stick with what's in the tesco order so long as they don't put the raw meat on top of the lettuce!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm pretty sure that I went into orbit the other day when they put a raw chicken on cooked ham and coleslaw.

OP posts:
Dalint · 24/08/2022 22:22

Thanks anyway.
Lettuce used to be 45p (butterhead or iceberg) it's now 55p
Cucumber used to be 40p and it's now 59p

I'm losing the will to live.

My fridge costs 70p to run overnight (well, it and the router). I'm just going insane as everything has not just jumped by a penny, it's by 20%
My smoking has also jumped by 20% to compensate 😆

Are you going to eat beef, cucumber and lettuce until pay day? The food bank might be a good idea. If you're not stressed about the good prices as much it will be easier to start cutting down on tobacco and then it will be easier to afford food if that makes sense.

Lose the fags. This is mental. Your body is going to not only be wrecked by the cigarettes but also the lack of a good diet.

The fags will go with me to the grave.

No, they're the items I wasn't sure about from Lidl prices as I alarmed I suppose about the jump in prices.

I should introduce you to the exotic concept of the salad sandwich - there's a knack to it.

The 600g beef will be to cook a stew which I freeze into portions.

So you would rather spend £13 on a packet of fags (or what ever they cost these days) than got some decent food for you and your family? Seriously?

Unfortunately, yes. That is my vice.

How much do you spend on coffee/cream cakes/nights out/clothes?

It's 23.49 for my tobacco per week and I'd rather die than give it up.

I don't do anything else. That's my vice and while I'm not proud of it, I'm not giving it up.

OP posts:
Dalint · 24/08/2022 22:45

I gave up almost everything in my life to rear my child but the fags are staying.

I didn't ask for sympathy. I asked for prices. I didn't ask for judgment either.

OK. Fair enough.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/08/2022 22:48

You can get cheaper meat than beef if money is tight. Chicken thigh fillets or pork shoulder would be cheaper and the chicken would take less time to cook.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 24/08/2022 22:50

Nothing until I’ve paid for the food shopping.

My iron is really low, so I need a bit of beef as I can't tolerate iron supplements.

I understand the need for a pleasure in life but could you cut down on the tobacco? Roll thinner ones or have less. That would leave a little more wiggle room in the food budget. Or if not,

My advice is go on olio, there's often people giving away food. People collect the stuff with that days date (that didn't sell) from places like pret, tesco etc and list it for free to save food being wasted. Or you can become a collector of food and you get to keep a certain percentage.

Get to lidl early in the morning and try for one of the £1.50 fruit & veg boxes.

Try the too good to go app. Lots of places do magic bags for a small price of that days food. Greg's, Morrisons and Costa are on there aswell as many local restaurants/cafes.
