Literally penny pinching - need prices from Lidl

Dalint · 24/08/2022 21:54

apologies in advance if you have read this post lol
I tried to get to Lidl today but the bus decided not to run. 😏And the arseholes are going on strike too I believe. Wonderful.

I pay for a Tesco delivery subscription as I don't drive but I'm actually down to pennies these days.
Can anyone tell me the price of the following three items from Lidl (I don't have Aldi near so I don't need those prices).
Iceberg lettuce
Cucumber
Stewing beef (lean diced beef) - I've 600g in basket (£10.50/kilo)

I used to know the price of everything but my memory is shot and now everything is jumping extortionately and I know that the next thing to go will be my will to live lol.
The tesco delivery is tomorrow so I only have 2 hours to decide before it's locked in and when it's pennies for heating for the winter or a penny here or there to a company, I no longer have the luxury.
Jesus Christ, but this is awful.

Hi, have you tried selling stuff you don't want on Vinted for some extra cash?

I joined last week and have already made a sale on something that I thought no one would want

I'm genuinely thinking of a car boot market but I don't have a car lol. I have that app on my phone but I've never used it.

@Dalint I didn't say you were begging, I said this has to be a wind up.

Let me explain why;

You've described those who really are struggling so are fighting for more as arseholes.

You're not willing to even cut down on your baccy to eat.

It's like a Tory advert for why the working class should be left to rot.

If you really are genuine please see your GP for advice on nicotine substitute and your iron levels

Wow

I understand the need for a pleasure in life but could you cut down on the tobacco? Roll thinner ones or have less. That would leave a little more wiggle room in the food budget. Or if not,

My advice is go on olio, there's often people giving away food. People collect the stuff with that days date (that didn't sell) from places like pret, tesco etc and list it for free to save food being wasted. Or you can become a collector of food and you get to keep a certain percentage.

Get to lidl early in the morning and try for one of the £1.50 fruit & veg boxes.

Try the too good to go app. Lots of places do magic bags for a small price of that days food. Greg's, Morrisons and Costa are on there aswell as many local restaurants/cafes.

Hadn't heard of that but I don't drive so am reliant on a bus that comes when it feels like it. I'll look it up and thank you.

I dont blame you. I quit smoking to have my kids and I miss it every day. My mental health has never been the same either.

I'd say that's the kids, not the absence of nicotine lol.

Would you substitute some of your fags for a vape? It’s way cheaper and healthier too.

Never

I am astounded that a person spends more on fags than on food.

I was never the brightest 😁

@Dalint
Hello Dalint, there are people on here recommending Too Good to Go, I downloaded it as an app, and I received 3 texts one after another, costing £1.50 each ! Apparently these texts are supposed to tell you where the local food is, but the cost of the notifications could cancel out what you save on leftover food going cheap. I was so freaked out at the cost of the texts, I cancelled the app immediately.

Your life is your own, so no judgment from me re: smoking. But it’s worth noting that smoking reduces your levels of vitamin C, making it extremely difficult to absorb iron. In short, smoking predisposes you to iron deficiency.

hence the need for beef perhaps. My iron levels are very low.
apt comment

I have TGTG but it has never sent me premium texts.

But I'd hesitate to recommend it to the OP because it's more about getting takeaway/coffee shop type food a bit cheaper than normal, it's not really cheap compared with making your own food from the supermarket.

No judgement on the smoking, as you say, your choice.

I would say that although the items you asked about are more, the majority of stuff is cheaper at Lidl so overall should save you money.

Also, check out price per Kilo on your stewing steak and other pre prepared meat/veg. Cant speak for Lidl but in Aldi it was £6.99 kg when I last bought it (admittedly a while ago) but the roasting joints where £5.99 kg. So I would buy a small roasting joint and make double the amount of stew because although the initial outlay was more, per portion it was cheaper. The meat was better quality too so needed less cooking time to tenderize so a saving on fuel too. Also I cook two meals at a time if I am using the oven so (say) stew on the top shelf and a curry or bolognaise on the bottom shelf as they both do well with a long slow cook as long as they are covered with foil and maybe add a bit of extra liquid to allow for evapouration.

I don't drive and I don't leave the house much as I have anxiety and there's only so much you can carry on your back so unfortunately I pay for the delivery subscription.

Btw - cucumber has no place in a salad sandwich. End of story.

I love a salad sandwich, lettuce cucumber and tomato with butter and salad cream though not mayo

Also don't feel bad for smoking. I eat so much food I often wonder if it would be healthier for me to smoke 🤣

I've got a £15 off a Morrisons £60 shop of that's any good to you/works on someone else's account? Just seen the email and did my shop yesterday but it expires in a few days fss.

Please offer it to someone here who shops there and emphasise the expiry date.
I'm an hour away by public transport from Morrisons but thank you so much for such a kind offer. You're a lovely kind person. x

Do you have a Co-Op near you?

They are on Good to Go (or might be called Too Good to Go) app. I think Waitrose are on it too. They sell boxes of food that goes out of date that day for £4 and it has to be worth a minimum of £12 (pre reduction). Its a bit random but some can be frozen and others will last until the next day. Makes for a few random meals at times but can be a life saver when down on the pennies.

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/08/2022 23:48

Oh and get the Shoppix app. You scan your receipts and answer surveys etc to get points. Its free and really worth it. I got my first reward of £5 (Amazon, Paypal or others) within 3 weeks of starting and get one roughly once a month now. Its not a huge amount but it costs you nothing. I save my rewards with Amazon towards Xmas so I have £50 in credit to spend that has cost me nothing.

YOu need a referral code but if you Google loads of different ones come up.

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/08/2022 23:50

I have never had a premium text from TGTG, perhaps you agreed to them without reading the T&C's? I always tick "no " to anything other than email.

Check if you have a community larder / community supermarket near you OP. They are much cheaper than normal shops and they want as many people to use them as possible so they can drive deals / get rid of stock from overstocked supermarkets. If you can’t find one, ask the food bank where the nearest one is.

I know you’re going to think I’m a wanker, but would you consider asking your GP if they do a free gym sub for people trying to give up smoking (some do)? because that might help you reduce the fags. Allegedly some people get addicted to exercise.. I just have a vision of you smoking and earning iceberg lettuce, and I’m worried you might not survive the winter…

I'm also worried about the Winter but honest to God, if I had to starve or have a cigarette, it would be the cigarette.

Thanks for all of you lovely kindness but cucumber or salad cream - don't even approach me with such notions.

Cant help on the prices but I hope you catch a break soon.

OP - sorry you’re struggling a bit dosh wise in these hard times.

Your salad sandwich recipe didn’t half give me a laugh though. You should write a recipe book - I’d read it for the enjoyment alone

Ishacoco · 25/08/2022 00:10

Not judging for the smoking (though I seriously do not understand prioritising cigarettes over food, but I've never smoked so I don't suppose I would) - but....but.....they're putting you in an early grave. Possibly through one extremely unpleasant illness or another. You're literally killing yourself, I don't understand? Nothing is more important than life, surely?

I was a signed up tory member for 6 weeks this year.

I ran like hell when they said who they really were.
I would have asked for a refund but I felt like the biggest gobshite ever so I was ashamed lol. I actually told my Dad and he, my biggest proponent, tried to say, 'well, sure, didn't ya try!'
