to be happy Andrew Tate has been kicked off some social media?

so his 'official' TikTok is down, and he's banned on Insta and Facebook apparently... BIL thinks it's outrageous and the guy is a "legend' whereas I think he's probably been punched in the head too many times as he make no or little sense most of the time.
Normally this wouldn't bother me as much but I had to sit my 12 year old down to discuss why Tate is a misogynistic, insecure waste of space who's thick as shite and only half as useful after discovering that the boys in his friendship grp thought Tate was someone to emulate.

My first thought was 'yes' his latest post about using a machete to teach woman a lesson was horrific. Apart from that, I think he's fine to stay on these platforms. Don't get me wrong I detest him and everything that comes out of his mouth but it can't all get cancelled because it's upsetting and he's full of shit. That feels like a slippery slope to censorship but yes my initial gut reaction was positive. I mentioned him to my teen son and we had a bit of a debate/convo about him which opened my eyes on how many young male teens thinks he's a hero. It's really depressing. In an ideal world I'd want all this misogynistic incel shit removed.

eyeoresancerre · 20/08/2022 15:07

I meant 'yes' as in fist pump in the air yes.

Anewdayanewdawn · 20/08/2022 15:10

If you replace what he says about women - oops, sorry I mean about 'bitches' - with black people or gay people he would have been kicked off long ago for hate speech.

That's very true - I hadn't thought of it like that.

The bit about not cancelling him doesn't tie in with the rest of your post, you clearly hate him and think what he says is damaging. Showing young boys and men that his attitude is so wrong that he is removed from social media should hopefully make them think. Our kids shouldn't be exposed to him, this is 2022!

eyeoresancerre · 20/08/2022 16:37

I do hate what he says but if we have free speech (not hate speech) then it could be argued that he should be allowed to remain on social media. If he gets cancelled then it sets an example that if you disagree with someone's opinion they should be cancelled. The cancellation of woman expressing concerns over woman's rights and rights of woman to have safe spaces is happening because people have a different opinions. Cancelling people on social media works both ways and I don't want the woman I support on social media to be cancelled so if I believe that view then sadly people like the loathsome Tate get to stay too. It's just my opinion and happy to listen to others point of view too.

I came on to say exactly this. Free speech is essential. Hate speech is a very dangerous concept. What about when your views are suddenly considered hateful?

I agree, it's a difficult line to tread. Who gets to decide what's offensive and what isn't? In the last few years we have had many women banned from social media for believing in biology, which isn't hateful, even though some evangelists would state otherwise.

I don't know who this guy is, I'm guessing he's of the MRA/ Incel variety? But as horrible and distasteful as I may find him and his views, banning someone for life is a bit ridiculous.
Can't they just delete the offending material and allow him back on?

Lamentations · 20/08/2022 17:20

'I don't agree with what you say but I defend your right to say it' was a mainstream view in the West not that long ago.

PinkFrogss · 20/08/2022 18:00

People don’t quite seem to understand what free speech is.

Social media sites are run by private companies, not the government. The majority of which have used rules to prevent hate speech, trolling, spam etc. Being banned for not following these rules does not impinge on freedom of speech.

For example, do you think MN deleting threads and banning a troll is anti-free speech?

You think anyone should be allowed to post whatever the hell they want on the internet and that’s all fine? Maybe google what free speech actually is, for a start

stillavid · 20/08/2022 18:02

I am only recently on tiktok and have seen some of his stuff. I assumed he is an exaggerated version of himself for views??

ddl1 · 20/08/2022 18:42

Yes. It's not just having different opinions; he's actually advocating violence.

Lamentations · 20/08/2022 19:51

'It's a private company' is what's always trotted out but when the big social media platforms are essentially the 'town square' or public space of the world that argument doesn't cut it.

Sometimeswinning · 20/08/2022 20:00

Just imagine if he was being racist!! He'd have probably been arrested! As its only women though it's considered free speech.

Some youtuber/Tiktok person called Daz apparently called him out and told his followers to report him. I need to Google this guy.

Ihatethenewlook · 20/08/2022 20:02

I’m normally totally against ‘cancel culture’, but the less I see of that nasty piece of shit, the better.

Sometimeswinning · 20/08/2022 20:03

👍👍👍👍
one should not be free to incite hatred and violence. Simple

Anewdayanewdawn · 20/08/2022 20:15

Nowt to do with ‘free speech’ -
he makes a fortune with these videos that deep into the Algorithms targeting young boys who don’t know any better.
he can spout whatever he likes elsewhere I guess, he’s still on podcasts and being interviewed .
he’s dumb as a rock - and his speech patterns deffo suggest he’s been knocked out too many times…

I'm mostly unhappy he hasn't been kicked off a cliff.

AmbushedByCake1 · 20/08/2022 20:48

Free speech isn't freedom from consequences. He spouts these views on privately owned platforms such as Instagram or Facebook; they have the right to kick him off if he doesn't follow their code of conduct.

Lem0ndrizzl3 · 20/08/2022 21:02

Glad to see him gone. I don't think that a man who says victims are partly responsible for being raped, promotes violence to get sex from women and says that in a relationship the man owns the woman, should have any kind of platform at all.

And that's before the evidence of domestic abuse, the investigations into rape and human trafficking, and the fact he moved to Romania because "he's not a rapist" but he likes that he can do what he wants there without being charged for it.

Influencers influence. Protecting young men from following his hateful ideology is much more important than his "right" to free speech, IMO.

Same!
Dh and I had to have several serious conversations with ds about this guy.

spirit20 · 20/08/2022 21:15

What's so bizarre about so many teenage boys seeing him as a hero is that they just don't get he is actively targeting influenceable teen boys and young men to manipulate them and make money out of them. He has already had the scam where he got women to pose online to scam men out of money and openly mocked the men who gave them money. And now he's started up his so called 'uni' for a hefty subscription fee which he claims will make people millionaires, but which just has the same get rich scams that can be found anywhere online. The boys who are being influenced by him really need to wise up a bit.

EmmaH2022 · 20/08/2022 21:19

Is this machete clip pp referred to?

Grumpusaurus · 20/08/2022 21:45

Meh, I it just gives him more attention and notoriety, which is what he ultimately craves. This dude is pathetic and gasping for attention, quite clearly demonstrated by how many reality TV shows he's auditioned for and went on over the years. There is an early one, some travelling one where he is very, very young but already a total tit. He seems to see himself as somewhat of a budget Hugh Heffner. He and his brothers are nout more than glorified pimps, having chosen to live in Romania with much laxer laws protecting women's rights. He targets women specifically and prides himself on the fact that are economically vulnerable and gets them to sell sexual services via Only Fans, taking a huge cut. Another of his source of income is running some ridiculous 'courses' to become as successful as him. It is all a big scam but as he sits in Romania, he gets aay with it.
