To think fatter people look better when old?

Clearly they’re not healthier (well, I guess it depends on lifestyle).
I always think people, particularly women, who are bigger, tend to look more youthful when older.

Slimmer or skinnier women (and men) tend to get scraggy necks and skin.
And their faces look older.

I guess an example is Dawn French, when she lost all that weight, she obviously looked fitter, but much older and more haggard looking.

Hoping this doesn’t offend anyone!

I agree.

thecatneuterer · 17/08/2022 17:13

No. I think when previously fat people lose weight when old, then they do tend to look a bit haggard - probably the loose skin. But generally slim always looks better regardless of age.

SunnyKlara · 17/08/2022 17:14

Well there is bigger and bigger.

Imo Dawn French looks massively better after her weight loss.

A woman who has always been fit and toned will retain better muscle tone as they age. Fatter people fill out poor muscle tone with fat. Women who loose lots of weight after the first flush of youth end up with excess loose skin, including around the neck.

Plump faces are associated with youth, hence the statement that you can either save your face or your body as you age.

Oh. How nice. A thread inviting women to judge other women on the basis of their size, and how nice that makes them look.

FFS. This shit isn't ok.

I am 52 and people always comment that I dont look my age. I have barely there 11's and only recently have noticed a feint line on my forehead. I was a 14 up until about 10 years but I am now too fat.
My sister who is younger than me is a lot slimmer and looks older.
I think it is genetic too, as our mother looks good for her age but also carries a bit of weight.
There needs to be a middle road - neither end of the weight spectrum is good but a bit of weight does preserve your face 😁

A women I know lost 2 stone for her wedding she was a perfectly normal weight blah blah blah. Looked lovely in her wedding dress. Holiday snaps went up with a tan and suddenly she looked like her 60year old mother is was quite the shock when I saw the photo as I thought it was her mum. Prior to losing those 2 stone even tanned she never looked that old. She’s put a stone back on and now looks back to her normal youthful but tanned self.

As Eamon Holmes said "No wrinkles on a balloon" !

goshy · 17/08/2022 17:28

slightly overweight often looks healthier yes particularly as older people can get ill often loose weight & can look drained.

backupplan1 · 17/08/2022 17:31

Definitely agree! Lisa Riley is another one that although she looked amazing and did so well to loose her weight, I do think it aged her face.

Completely agree. We seriously need to progress from this shit

This.
And the double whammy of age and size.

Great news! 🙌

I think my favourite post so far is the one that says that fat old people smell bad and look unfashionable riding mobility scooters Hmm

W0tnow · 17/08/2022 17:37

Jane Goodall is one of the most beautiful older women ever, I think. Audrey Hepburn, Catherine Hepburn….

Grimed · 17/08/2022 17:38

If you were overweight then lose it yes, if you were never overweight then no.

Fairyliz · 17/08/2022 17:38

Nope you’re wrong, I’m old and gorgeous to look at with barely a wrinkle in sight 😁

Whitesapphire · 17/08/2022 17:41

No, in my experience as a nurse fat old people tend to have much worse mobility problems than the thin ones, as well as heart problems, diabetes etc. it’s not a good look! Slim for the win.

J0y · 17/08/2022 17:41

I assumed this applied to men too.
I dont know if I agree. It depends.

Thin thin 'works' best before 45 I think
From then on slim.
Don't think being overweight is ever the most flattering look. Wish it were, my bmi is 26

Mushroo · 17/08/2022 17:41

Hmmm, I think you’re cherry picking examples. An overweight but otherwise healthy person will look better than a skinny heavy sun bather who smokes a lot (thinking of Madge in Benidorm).

Taking your example of Dawn French, of a similar age would be Emma Thompson, Julianne Moore, Kim Cattrall all of whom Id say are skinny look pretty good.

Also, there’s the point that skinny people tend to live longer than massively overweight people, so they will of course look older… (of the generation including Mary Berry, the Queen, Angela Lansbury I can’t actually think of anyone hugely overweight)

maddiemookins16mum · 17/08/2022 17:56

I’m a fatty, I certainly think I’d look ‘worse’ if I lost a lot of weight. However, the reality is I might look worse but my heart/joints would thank me.

cordiate · 17/08/2022 17:58

Lovely though it would be to have a full face and neck, I choose to have a fit and active body in my old age and that means not being overweight.

GnomeDePlume · 17/08/2022 17:59

I'm fat. Means I fill up my skin. If I lost lot of weight I would look like the saggy baggy elephant. I would have to tie all the loose skin up on the top of my head in a top knot.

queenMab99 · 17/08/2022 18:00

My elderly mother said, after I lost weight, and was complaining about wrinkles,
'Your wrinkles are only visible really close up, but we could see you were fat from miles off'😂
