To think fatter people look better when old?

Clearly they’re not healthier (well, I guess it depends on lifestyle).
I always think people, particularly women, who are bigger, tend to look more youthful when older.

Slimmer or skinnier women (and men) tend to get scraggy necks and skin.
And their faces look older.

I guess an example is Dawn French, when she lost all that weight, she obviously looked fitter, but much older and more haggard looking.

Hoping this doesn’t offend anyone!

Wasn't there a saying you have to choose between your face and your bum, after a certain age (obviously said to women) Hmm

I've only ever seen that said on Mumsnet and it's always said by women.

And if you actually think about what they're saying, they're saying they (apparently) chose to get fat so their faces didn't look so wrinkled.

Yeah right 🤗

I'm sure it was Sophia Loren who said that and I don't think she was a Mumsnetter.

JengaLife · 17/08/2022 20:13

you know you should be a healthy weight as when you are older bodies tend to suffer more than when you have youth on your side.
I think being super skinny can look aging in the face if your cheeks are hollow and face gaunt. However your body will look young.
A stone overweight is one thing and probably does help plump up the weight but several stones overweight is aging.

Thecaravan · 17/08/2022 20:16

I am thinnish, in my mid 40s and my face is gaunt looking. I hate it. Have botox and fillers but can't afford them very often and they don't make a huge difference as large amounts are pricey. My hands and feet are also very old looking- all bony and prominent veins- which I also think ages me even more.
But my health and fitness is currently more important so I tolerate it and keep my weight lower, for now anyway! Maybe in future I'll gain a few kilos and see if that improves my face 😐

Imissmoominmama · 17/08/2022 20:16

I look older when I put on weight. Frumpier too. I’m 56.

Oblomov22 · 17/08/2022 20:26

Agreed. Not too fat but a bit of weight. Those really thin look terrible, age much more.

As Eamon Holmes said "No wrinkles on a balloon" !

🤣🤣🤣

Tiani4 · 17/08/2022 20:31

Yes it's "face or figure " as you get older , that's what my 57 year old friend tells me

You need an extra fee Linda as you age to fill out that face but not extra 2 stone

thesurrealist · 17/08/2022 20:31

Ageist and fattist.

Fucking fabulous.

How about accepting people as they are?

WhatIsThisPlease · 17/08/2022 20:34

I've been very slim all my life. I'm 48 now and have saggy jowls and a scraggy neck. I'm very fit and healthy but I look dreadful.

It actually makes me depressed.

Fizbosshoes · 17/08/2022 20:41

Yes I heard it well before I discovered MN, but I wasn't sure who said it.
And I didn't say I agreed with it I was putting it out there as a well known saying/theory.

TwinklingFairyLightz · 17/08/2022 20:41

One reason fat people not looking younger is that Seasalt type clothes are the only ones that will fit fatter women.

I'm about a stone heavier than I would like to be but I look a lot better than many of my contemporaries who are substantially overweight. Double chins aren't youthful.

I'm concentrating on getting fit and toned and eating as healthily as possible. I think healthy is a good look and fat isn't healthy.

Fillers and retinol.

Famous quote from Barbara Cartland:

After forty a woman has to choose between losing her figure or her face. My advice is to keep your face, and stay sitting down.

surreygirl1987 · 17/08/2022 20:42

*Oh. How nice. A thread inviting women to judge other women on the basis of their size, and how nice that makes them look.

FFS. This shit isn't ok.*

Yup. Surely we've moved on from this?

Stevie6 · 17/08/2022 20:49

I lost weight and didn't like how my face looked (or my collarbone) so I put some back on 🤷🏻‍♀️. Also I have no plans to run for a bus, ever. I am hoover JUST inside the healthy weight range and mid 40s

Stevie6 · 17/08/2022 20:50
  • however

I do hoover, but I am not one.

J0y · 17/08/2022 20:50

I see this more of a which is healthier, a bit overweight or a bit underweight. It's an interesting and important question.
We don't have to attack anybody.

LookingOverHereAllNight · 17/08/2022 20:58

I think people look better when they are a healthy size and look toned, even if they have wrinkles or whatever. I like to look nice but my priority is being fit and healthy.

LaMarschallin · 17/08/2022 21:00

I think it's wishful thinking.
Fillers mimic cheekbones not fat.
The best looking old lady I knew was quite thin and kept fit with walking and swimming.
She was lucky in that she had thick, curly hair that was a beautiful, pure white by the time I knew her and she had amazing cheekbones. She reminded me of Katherine Hepburn (another beautiful, slim old lady).
She was in her late 80s and looked 20 years younger and I'm sure that was due to her bone structure stopping her face sagging.

lollipoprainbow · 17/08/2022 21:05

Charming

VioletInsolence · 17/08/2022 21:06

No I’m nearly 50, slim and have quite a slim face and I look ten years younger than my age. I put on two stones a few years ago and I looked puffy.

You look late 30s in your late 40s?

Minikievs · 17/08/2022 21:17

I actually agree with you. My mum is like a twiglet and has been for years (since middle age) When she's been REALLY thin on occasion, she's looked like a walking skull.
I've lost some weight in the last few years (2-3) and am very aware of looking similar (I'm early 40s)
There's a lot to be said for the old adage of "face or body" when you get older.
My body looks ok but I'm very aware of looking drawn

Badger1970 · 17/08/2022 21:26

I've lost 3 stone recently, and am slightly horrified at the reflection staring back in the mirror. I've got an arse the size of a small continent still but my face looks haggard. It's going from the top down, I'm convinced.

Great Hmm

Vallmo47 · 17/08/2022 21:28

This thread makes me despair. How the fuck are we still judging people solely for their appearance and not even pretending to give a damn about anything else. Disgusting. I don’t care if you are on team fat or team slim, can’t we just bloody accept our bodies for what they are. It’s okay to get old, it’s okay for bodies to change and it’s absolutely fine to be totally awesome and accept others for who they are inside.
