To think it's not unusual for a woman to have size 42+ feet ...

... and yet so many shoe ranges only go up to a size 41! Why is that? I've had problems buying shoes ever since my early teens. I rarely own more than 2 pairs at any one time, because finding shoes that I like, and which fit, is so difficult. If size 42 (or more) isn't unusual, then there must be a big untapped market out there.

I don't have big feet, but I do have wide feet, which would fit men's trainers better if they went to a small enough size. Manufacturers seem to want to sell women's shoes in no more than 3 -4 sizes (EU 38/39 to 41) and if you're outside that you need children's or men's. Not helpful to anyone!

For sports shoes, if you have wider feet being able to sneak into the men's ranges isn't a bad thing because they have way more choice and and the function/style choices are often better but for formal/casual shoes this is absolutely not the case!

Genuinely, interested to know where you have the data from. I searched around earlier in the thread and could only find this chart from a paper on Uk shoe size distribution, but it also incorporated data from the US (converted to Uk sizes). Where do you get UK regional shoe size info? (This chart implies size 3 is a lot less common than size 8, but it’s only as good as the data it was sourced from).

I would love to know the methodology used by the respected statistical body Shoe Zone Retail Ltd to generate these data.

Where do the people on this thread buy gloves,or is it just me that can't buy any nice gloves that fit my long fingers (with a narrow palm). I should be about a 7 palm but fingers are too long for 8.5 so I put up with cheap gloves that don't fit or keep my fingers warm! I accept that this is less of a problem than shoes though...

madasawethen · 23/08/2022 16:03

That chart is interesting. I had no idea the range of sizes for women.
I thought my feet were on the small size but seems I'm bog average at size 5.

Seems a good opportunity though for someone to make larger and smaller sizes for women.

AuntieMarys · 23/08/2022 16:07

I'm a 9/43.
High Street sizes don't fit...Next, Clarks,Hotter, Deichmann...I have to buy online.
Gabor, Low Heels, Otto and Ivy, Magnus and Crispins. I'm early 60s and have had issue since I was 17.
I live in leather Superga ( black, navy and white as they don't make bigger sizes in fun colours)

I didn't realise women could wear a size 8!

apropos the PP who get annoyed at boat feet comments, I've had a thousand comments about my small feet like, 'how the hell don't you fall over with those feet?, 'did you r parents bind them?' and other such crap.

Some women have boat feet. Like massive flippers!

That's just rude.
Really rude.

purplecorkheart · 23/08/2022 16:16

My mother is 42 and really struggles to buy shoes. She is lucky that a local shoe store stocks a very limited select of 42 size shoes. They put them aside for her and ring her when they come in so she gets first pick. Only one store in our nearby city stocks size 42 and nowhere does above that.

PurplePinecone · 23/08/2022 16:19

I agree. Has always annoyed me that it's impossible to get size 42 shoes. Definitely undersupplied as when it comes to sales as there are loads of size 3/4/5/6 but hardly any 8/9 or none at all. Always upsetting seeing shoes you like then realising they never have your size

AgathaX · 23/08/2022 16:39

User4223131 that's really useful information, thanks for posting.

So just because you've had a few insults throughout your life about having small feet, you think that makes it ok to come onto this thread and be insulting and nasty to women with bigger feet than you? Right you are then, Ms Pleasant!

That chart stops at size 8 for women. Where are the 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10s etc? Suspect data.

FancyFelix · 23/08/2022 16:48

So ironic that as soon as a few posters comment on how lovely and affirming the thread has been, the rude ones arrive to wreck the vibe Confused

FuzzyPuffling · 23/08/2022 16:50

All the rude ones seem to be women with teeny tiny feet. I put it all down to jealousy!

Awww aren’t you tiny and cute 🥰 a real life tinker bell 🧚‍♀️ I bet all the men just want to scoop you up and protect you for life, and all the women stare with envy at your miniature hands and teeny little paws. Nawwwwwww 🥰

It doesn’t stop - you can see them in the intermediate shaded area. There are around 22 8.5’s and around 30 9’s. But it’s a noisy data set cos there’s only maybe around 1000 ish data points. Would def be better to have more data.

JamesWilbyFanClub · 23/08/2022 17:14

I refuse to buy shoes from John Lewis because they insist a 41 is an 8, and they most often have nothing bigger.

AuntieMarys · 23/08/2022 17:19

Can't believe the boat feet/flipper comments. So rude.

@RomComPhooey same
I saw a quote that said "think bigger than a smaller pair of pants"
I mean my uncle was a heavyweight boxer. My cousin is 6ft 4.. I was never going to be a petite ballet dancer Grin

But my biggest bugbear with the shoes in M&S is that they put the small sizes on the top shelves and the large sizes on the bottom shelves.

So I'm having to fold my long legs down to the floor to get them off the bottom and when I stand up I see a 5 foot nothing woman jumping up to get her size 3s off the shelf above her head, which of course I pass down to her and we have a laugh about how stupid they are to have not realised the problem this causes.

Oh god yes this!!!!

I've always wondered why they still do this - it's absurd!

Marvellousmadness · 17/08/2022 13:30

Yabu opm of course size 42 isnt a normal womens size. The avarage is 39. Im a size 36. Which is tiny. I buy kids shoes sometimes hahaha

Try drag queens stores.

Oh fgs. Hmm how rude. And as had been said, Mens shoes are very different shapes from womens.
