To think it's not unusual for a woman to have size 42+ feet ...

... and yet so many shoe ranges only go up to a size 41! Why is that? I've had problems buying shoes ever since my early teens. I rarely own more than 2 pairs at any one time, because finding shoes that I like, and which fit, is so difficult. If size 42 (or more) isn't unusual, then there must be a big untapped market out there.

I didn't realise women could wear a size 8!

I am a size 8 in trainers and boots. I need a 9 in anything like heels (which is rare anyway).

Kpo58 · 16/08/2022 18:35

I have size 10.5 feet. It's a nightmare to buy any normal shoes. Shoes for large feet are only in specialist shops and cost around £100 per pair.

They know that there is a market for larger women's shoes but the shops just refuse to supply them. It was quite common for shops to get a single pair of size 9s in that sold straight away, but not have the sense to stock more as there is an obvious demand for them.

I bet they say there isn't a demand for larger sizes, but that's purely because women with larger sized feet have given up going into normal shoe shops knowing that there is NOTHING that will fit them, so what's the point.

TooManyPJs · 16/08/2022 18:35

Depends whether you are talking U.K. or EU sizes. A 42 U.K. size would be extremely unusual, man or woman....😀

downfield · 16/08/2022 18:35

I think bigger than size 43 is unusual tbh. Yes people are taller, broader with bigger feet. I'm just under 5ft 10 & a 39 which is small for my height.

Moltenpink · 16/08/2022 18:36

My pet hate is online shops going up to an 8 but not stating the EU size anywhere. They must lose sales that way, surely (am also in the size 42 club)

I think it's terrible, why on earth didn't their mothers bind their feet or chop their toes off?

FuzzyPuffling · 16/08/2022 18:36

I'm 5'8" and a 42. I've never considered 5'8" to be terribly tall, just tallish.

If the men's department doesn't have what you want, how about trying the sports department for a couple of canoes?

IHateWasps · 16/08/2022 18:36

I do think it's somewhat unusual. I don't know anyone woman wears that size. The shops in my area seem to be full of comparatively larger sizes that are always left over when the average sizes are sold out Perhaps we're especially short here, though I'm size 5 and 5'8 so not so short or they're just shit at knowing their customer base and stock control.

downfield · 16/08/2022 18:37

DH is a u.k. 12/13 & often struggles to find trainers in a 13

Moltenpink · 16/08/2022 18:37

Sainsbury’s Tu have a decent size 42 range, they are good quality and do real leather boots etc.

Eh?

overitall1 · 16/08/2022 18:37

Size 8 since 1971. I used to have to wear boys shoes and got bullied horribly. You simply couldn't buy anything that could be a school shoe in womens. I now take a 9 and buy mine from Deichmann. I still buy mens walking sandals though, now I'm in my 60s I don't care what I look like as long as I'm comfortable!

downfield · 16/08/2022 18:38

Lots of shops do size 42

FuzzyPuffling · 16/08/2022 18:38

When I was younger ( and really cared) I would go into a shoe shop and simply ask " what have you got in an 8?"

Flossflower · 16/08/2022 18:38

I have size 8 feet. I mostly wear hotter. I do a lot of walking and large feet are great for that! I find that some German walking boots go up to size 9. I need size 9 for boots as I like thick socks. I am 5ft 4 ins and a size 10.

AgathaX · 16/08/2022 18:38

Since they decided that a UK 8 was a 41, rather than a 42 as it used to be, the choice has shrunk. Next, Clarks, m&s are about the only high street ones, although I just bought some Fat Face boots that are a 42 although labelled a UK 9.
It's very frustrating.

I have been pondering if I should have done that with my feet as most shoe shops only seem to do children's sizes in the ladies section. 🤔

Clymene · 16/08/2022 18:40

Oh god, I've never before been part of the teeny tiny brigade @GetOffTheRoof GrinGrinGrinGrin

Sorry! I just meant outliers.

I honestly wasn't boasting. My life is so much easier now my feet are bigger. But you can't shrink feet Sad

AutumnH · 16/08/2022 18:40

I'm a 7.5. Only M&S seem to stock this half size. But at least generally I can wear a 41 even if it's too big, while 40 is too small.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/08/2022 18:41

FuzzyPuffling · 16/08/2022 18:28

Have you considered wearing men's shoes?

No, me neither. I may have big feet but I'm still a woman and would like to wear what other women wear, thank you very much

Apart from the styling, men's shoes are generally deeper and wider.

42/43 here, I live in birkies, Blundstones, trainers and the odd work shoe from Clark's in a 9.

Fly London boots in a 42 fit, but not shoes.

redskyatnight · 16/08/2022 18:41

One abiding memory of my childhood is walking all round town trying to find shoes big enough.
not to mention the following
<go into shoe shop>
My mum: Please can you show us which shoes you have in a size 9?
Shop assistant: you have to tell us what you like and we'll tell you if they come in a 9
Us : <picks 3 or 4 pairs>
Shop assistant: <goes away, comes back> No, none of them come in a 9. Do you want to pick some others?
Us: <picks 3 or 4 more pairs>
Shop assistant: <goes away, comes back> No none of them come in a 9. Do you want to pick some others?
Us: <pick some more>
Shop assistant: <goes away, comes back> None of them come in a 9. Shall I look and see what shoes are available in that size?

Every single shop. Every single time. Thank goodness you can now look this stuff up on the internet.

Sudename · 16/08/2022 18:42

I'm 5ft 8 and wear a 42. My pet hate is when you ask a shop assistant for a size 8 and they bring you a 7 suggesting you try them!

Stretchandsnap · 16/08/2022 18:42

I am 44 and DD1 (12) is 43 and DD2 (11) is 42 - buying shoes has always been a pain in the arse - no choice, ruinously expensive but now trying to buy school shoes is so stressful and depressing. It is so much better than it was but I’d line to just be able to go to a shoe shop and try shoes on like everyone else…

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/08/2022 18:43

Phrenologistsfinger · 16/08/2022 18:33

Also 5’8” and a 42!

And me. Or 43.

I was being ironic. Sorry it missed the mark! ( It's just the crap that is spouted at us women with size 8+ feet)

I know men's shoes are made on a different last, and just don't fit. I've been there. Many times.
