To think there is no flattering swimwear for the larger lady

MahMahMahMahCorona · 13/08/2022 15:47

I've scoured the Internet and I cannot find what I'm looking for.

Currently 9months into breastfeeding and 16 stone (down from 20 since birthing the baby, so that's a bonus).

Going on holiday next week and am in total denial about my size. Nothing looks right, nothing looks like it can cover all my sins so I anticipate hiding inside, beneath sarongs and towels, baking and perspiring for the entirety of the holiday.

DP suggestion? "Ask Mumsnet".

So I'm asking: where does a 16 stone breastfeeding large boobed lop-sided (baby only feeds from the right breast) large thigh'd large with an overhang mama, find flattering swimwear?

AIBU in saying the task is an impossible task?

I think it's important not to confusing "looks nice" with "slimming" or "flattering". My mum drives me bonkers with this. Her sole criteria for if someone or something looks good is if it's slimming. If it's a gorgeous colour and you feel comfortable in it, then it's flattering. Especially on holiday when it's hot, you need comfort above all else. Pack a couple of very floaty lightweight shirts or dresses for mooching about but please don't make yourself miserable looking for a holy grail of 2 oz of lycra that will somehow perform miracles. I've been there x

Yeah I'd agree with this. I'm pretty chubby. When I go for the tummy control/ultra flattering stuff I just look chubby but trying to hide it. Imo I look better when I just choose stuff I like anyway - I tend to go for bright colours and bold patterns. So yes don't mistake something that's slimming with something that suits you.

Don't you dare hide that beautiful body that is so strong and doing so much feeding the baby!
Be proud and allow your self to relax in the water and get the sun on your skin.
My tip tips -
Black bottoms - whatever size you fancy - I like to get a brown tummy but if you want more coverage go bigger.
Get a bra sized top in a bright colour or pattern.
Cheap short beach dress with a shirred top (Amazon) to pull on when needed- easy to whip down to feed baby.
And most of all - get a spray tan before you go, and use tons of moisturiser.
Enjoy your break x

How can you say don't hide that body and then suggest it needs altering with a spray tan?

I have a two piece with skort bottoms. I love it as I don’t need to worry about hair. And it covers the biggest part of my thighs. The top part happens to be flattering over the tummy too. I’m on the beach a lot and feel perfectly confident in it.

I can’t remember where I got it from but anyway it was accidentally from the US and took ages to arrive. But just googling skirt swimming costumes brings up loads of lovely ones, I might have to expand my wardrobe before summer ends.

MrsCharlieD · 13/08/2022 16:54

I'm about your size. I bought all my swimwear recently from SHEIN and felt fab in it. I prefer tankinis with longer skater style tops. Nips in the waist, shows my boobs and hide my stomach.

Beautiful, until I saw the price 😢

claracluck1978 · 13/08/2022 16:56

I'm similar size and I have bought mine from Deakin and Blue. Great suits and they have different shaped sizes as well as different sizes to tailor for a better fit.

I have 4 and love them all!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to stay covered.

If the OP feels comfortable enough to do so then that's great but there is nothing wrong with her if she doesn't.

Not everyone enjoys letting it all hang out, and that's ok.

BOTH things are OK!!

Sunshineandwetsuits · 13/08/2022 16:59

Landsend tugless tummy control swimsuits are AMAZING! I’m in my 3rd ( size 18-20 with wobbly bits everywhere and big boobs) and that’s only because I swim daily.
most flattering and comfortable swimmer suits I have ever worn.
not cheap but they have a great sale on right now.

Beautiful, until I saw the price 😢

So the SeaFolly one linked is £100, but I’ve just come across the exact same one (same model and same photos) on SeaFancy.co.uk for £24.

Eggmcmuffin · 13/08/2022 17:09

I have the m&s one too, same as @Numbat2022 And can highly recommend!

waterbluesorcer · 13/08/2022 17:09

I'm the same weight as you and just got back from holiday and wore this

www.walkonbeach.co.uk/blue-polka-dot-print-shirring-knotted-spaghetti-strapstankini-set-apds067.html

It was great. The shorts aren't tight, and the top hid any tummy roll. There's a good shelf inside as well. I really felt good and comfortable.

Londontown12 · 13/08/2022 17:12

Cupshe has lovely swimsuits and bikinis x

theskyispurple · 13/08/2022 17:13

@bluberries easily! It adds to my confidence in the same way putting lipgloss on might.
Of course hide your body away if you want to, but I got the impression that there was some shame about not being perfect and therefore having to cover up- I think I was clumsily trying to say it would be nice to feel joy and relax with the sun on your skin regardless of how your body looks.

triplechoc · 13/08/2022 17:14

I’m a size 24 at the minute, and have bottoms from Dorothy Perkins (size 22 but v stretchy) that come nice and high up my tummy, and invested this year in a molke tankini, and I finally have a combo of support, comfort and coverage that I feel ok with.
I have it in black, but the tops come in different sizes and patterns.

unvillage · 13/08/2022 17:16

I bought this at size 24 and it's genuinely so flattering, I felt so good wearing it

Ive bought some swim shorts from decathlon. I also bought a uv t-shirt because I burn to a crisp and can't be arsed slathering sun cream on every five minutes. I have a bikini top (underwired and correct bra size) to go under the t shirt. It's made such a huge difference to how I feel just going to the local outdoor pool. I'm a curvy 14 and I think I may have finally cracked the swimwear nightmare for holidays!

CassandraCross · 13/08/2022 17:19

Thank you for the reality check: I've been body shamed so often by my own mother (no matter what weight I was) I feel very very nervous about going out in public without covering myself from top to toe. 😳

Please don't, honestly no-one cares there are all shapes and sizes on the beach and by the pool. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

pisspants · 13/08/2022 17:19

I have massive boobs, saggy tum and fat thighs and spent ages trying to find something and tried on loads. Eventually came across this one from Tesco. You can't buy Tesco clothing online any more but it's from this season so should still be in stock in the bigger stores. I loved the print but thought it could be unflattering but I think it distracts from the body underneath and I felt quite stylish and comfortable in it, I've attached a pic.

I wear bikinis with super high waist. Get them ok Amazon. I’m a bit bigger then you and feel confident in it. New look and Amazon are good for it.

I think I was clumsily trying to say it would be nice to feel joy and relax with the sun on your skin regardless of how your body looks. that should include if your skin is pale though. Why the need to paint it.

inmyslippers · 13/08/2022 17:29

SHEIN curve

theskyispurple · 13/08/2022 17:31

@bluberries I've never thought about it more deeply than my Jen preference is to be bronzed, and having a fake tan helps me feel more confident.
You are right though - it shouldn't be the case that I assume that for everyone
