"massive brood" - oh sod off <eyeroll>

My sister has 3 children and her SIL has 4. They often meet up for days out together and have started to refer to their "massive broods" whenever either of them post pics on social media Hmm

a) 3 or even 4 kids of your own is hardly "massive" - 3 kids is pretty standard and 4 is more than average but not massive FFS.

b) "brood" is just wanky and crass. They're children not chickens. Fuck off and sit on some eggs if you want a brood.

Her SIL is quite wanky overall tbh, into some niche toys and clothing brands that she is always tagging and banging on about how the children are in matching clothes, so I think this idea of having a large family somehow ties into the lifestyle she aspires to if that makes sense. But seeing "massive brood" every time they share pics of their not-very-notable number of kids is doing my fucking head in!

Disclaimer - yes I do have bigger things to worry about and no I don't hate my sister, I'm just having a minor vent on a forum designed for that purpose.

Are you jealous of them having lots of children? That’s how this post comes across

Antarcticant · 12/08/2022 09:29

I suppose when they are out together, seven children seems like a lot!

Stompasaurus · 12/08/2022 09:29

Hahahahahahaaaaa jesus christ no, I've got the number I wanted and would rather eat cold sick than have any more!

Unsure how you inferred that but MN is weird as fuck these days so I should have known someone would have a strange perspective.

I'm with you. Twee and like it's a huge achievement. See also people who have a girl and a boy (like they got to choose) and dress them in matching pyjamas at Christmas. Creepy.

Comes across to me like this particular phrase just inexplicably irks OP. It happens sometimes, someone uses a phase and it just gets RIGHT ON YOUR TITS and you can't properly articulate why.

BlueKaftan · 12/08/2022 09:32

Sounds like their lives and identities are wrapped up in their children and they’re trying to be lighthearted? Or maybe relatable? Or maybe just interesting? 🤷‍♀️

PyjamaFan · 12/08/2022 09:32

It's funny how some words and phrases can be so massively irritating.

I really hate it when people go on about 'significant costs'. It's completely irrational, I know, but it just gets to me!

Sciurus83 · 12/08/2022 09:33

Errrrrr. Well you are definitely being unreasonable and don't like your sister or SIL. I doubt it's over them saying massive brood, which is totally innocuous. 3 and 4 kids is pretty big, I don't know many with more than 2. But anyway, you probably want to think about why you don't like them, do they make you feel left out, sister is closer to SIL than you. You sound a bit jealous to be honest, unless there's a massive backstory here.

BreakerOfBras · 12/08/2022 09:33

I'm with you, OP, it's cringey as hell.

jeaux90 · 12/08/2022 09:35

It's definitely cringe.

TulipsTwoLips · 12/08/2022 09:36

Yes, really cringey, but I do find people are always trying to give labels to make something positively ordinary into ‘a thing’ these days.

There is no way you'd be this upset if it wasn't down to some type of jealousy. Maybe you would have liked a similar setup when your kids were younger or you'd like it for when they are older.

I've been there and done the whole en mass thing. Its a bloody nightmare and sucks the fun out of it. But the kids always had a blast! I'd just ignore it and roll your eyes. If you can.

yonce · 12/08/2022 09:44

Just casually comment "oh my god, that's so cute - you look like a little cult" or similar on each post 🤷🏻‍♀️ tbh I'm terrible for overusing weird little phrases that probably annoy the heck out of people 😆

I disagree. I really really wouldn't like 3 or 4 kids and yet this would still make me roll my eyes.

This has really tickled me. Please write this OP! 😂
I agree with you on the cold sick point. 2 is more than enough for me.

scoobycute · 12/08/2022 09:59

You're totally overreacting

Dalaidramailama · 12/08/2022 10:01

I think it does come across as a bit jealous. When I announced my 3rd pregnancy my SIL started to get very dramatic about it saying she would rather kill herself and shit in her hands and clap rather than have more kids etc. It’s not a normal reaction. My friend has 5 and very happy so of course i am happy for her despite not ever wanting that amount of kids.

She stopped speaking to me too as soon as the third was born. Weird.

KvotheTheBloodless · 12/08/2022 10:01

It is a bit weird, 3 or 4 kids is hardly a huge number of children - maybe they wanted more and couldn't have them?

MissyB1 · 12/08/2022 10:03

Yes yes to “you look like a little cult” 🤣

And totally agree about the matching Xmas pyjamas pictures too 🤮

kierenthecommunity · 12/08/2022 10:03

People with a fuck load of kids in TaB articles wheats refer to them as a ‘brood.’ I see the term as being in the same category as ‘pushing them into the world.’

kierenthecommunity · 12/08/2022 10:04

Wheats = always. I haven’t got my glasses on 😂

10HailMarys · 12/08/2022 10:20

I assume that by 'massive brood' they mean the seven of them together.

I don't think I could bring myself to give a shit about this, sorry. Do you feel left out or something because you're not invited to the joint get-togethers? You don't seem to like your sister very much.

But even your response to my question “hahahhaahaaaaa Christ no” is a bit over the top.

it isn’t a phrase I would use - I also don’t like people calling their children and husband “my favourites” as in “time with my favourites” or “my favourite people”, mostly because it’s pretty obvious they are your favourite people and sounds twee, but I wouldn’t come on here to make a ranty post about it. 3/4 children is quite a lot where I live, and who cares if they want to refer them to them as a large brood or whatever?

Mally100 · 12/08/2022 10:29

I personally think 3 is alot and 4 sounds like a nightmare, but why do you care about anyone's opinion? People will think what they want. And yes 7 kids is a hell of alot all together.

ReeseWitherfork · 12/08/2022 10:32

Hahaha when I read the title I was hoping it would be about chickens. It’s got smacks of “I’m JuSt So RaNdOm AnD cRaZy ArEn’T i?!!!!!!”

Barf at matching outfits. Unless they’re all under three somehow then they should attempt to let them have their own personalities.
