To go to Mexico pregnant

whoopthereitis11 · 08/08/2022 21:11

Thinking of going to Cancun last minute for some R&R but I’m 5 months pregnant.

I feel like we never hear about Zika anymore so my AIBU is AIBU to go to Cancun pregnant whilst Zika is a risk?

Would be staying in a 5 start resort (relevant as I think they must for mozzies)

Would be a no for me

Aquamarine1029 · 08/08/2022 21:14

I wouldn't risk it. No way.

MsBallen · 08/08/2022 21:16

It's up to you but I personally wouldn't and I'm ridiculously adventurous including flying aircrafts whilst pregnant.

Zika risk for one, mossies don't just stop because it's a five star resort and also wouldn't you go outside ever?

Also mexico seems risky distance and insurance wise if early labour happened.

USaYwHatNow · 08/08/2022 21:29

Have you had a look at the gov.uk website? I would have a read there and see how you feel. Personally (35 weeks pregnant) I wouldn't. We went for our honeymoon 3 years ago and although we didn't get bitten, I just couldn't forgive myself if anything happened, although I appreciate the risk is super super low. Also, I did a 4 hour flight at 25 weeks pregnant and wanted to cry the whole time I was so uncomfortable 😂 I couldn't do long haul and I'm pretty fit, sensible and a decent flyer. I found the cabin pressure too low (really weird) and it made me feel really out of breath and claustrophobic.

It's hurricane/rainy season in the Carribean. It's not just the mozzies, you risk it raining the whole time you're there, August and September are particularly bad for rain. You're unlikely to have a major hurricane before mid to late August but it can still rain the whole bloody time. It's very rainy and hot and sticky.

I just want an all inclusive where I can be waited on with no kids around. I can’t find anything in Europe 😭

Nah. I've been to a few 5*s in Mexico and they always have mosquitos even when they spray.

AppleBottomRats · 08/08/2022 23:01

I wasn’t pregnant but I’ve been to that part of Mexico and didn’t get bitten by mosquitos at all. I use Incognito repellent.

GoodVibesHere · 08/08/2022 23:05

Christ no

hulahooper2 · 08/08/2022 23:07

I’ve heard of a lot of folk being pretty I’ll after returning home from mexico

toastfiend · 08/08/2022 23:09

I wouldn't.

You could go anywhere else in the world, why specifically pick a place that poses any kind of risk, no matter how tiny?

edwinbear · 08/08/2022 23:09

I’ve been to Mexico many times, in fact we went a fortnight ago, decent resort which misted daily. As usual, I got eaten alive, as did DC, despite covering ourselves in repellent spray. I wouldn’t going pregnant OP, sorry but not worth the risk.

Badgerstmary · 08/08/2022 23:12

Mexico is my favourite place in the world for holidays. I’ve definitely been bitten less there than Scotland. The sound of your holiday sounds bliss.

GoodVibesHere · 08/08/2022 23:12

I'm actually quite shocked that you would take such a risk to your unborn baby, purely for some 'me time'. Sheesh.

edwinbear · 08/08/2022 23:12

I think Mauritus might be Zika free, please do your research but some fabulous AI top class hotels there.

Coyoacan · 08/08/2022 23:14

I've looked at the Mexican government website and there have been a total of 56 cases since 2016 and none in Cancun. I don't think you have much to worry about.

Snowinsummer · 08/08/2022 23:14

If you were to need medical treatment you'd probably have to pay for it yourself (and claim it back afterwards) as most hospitals don't work with travel insurance & have armed guards on the doors. Make sure your credit card has a high limit...!

AverageJoan · 08/08/2022 23:15

Second the Mauritius suggestion. We travelled there when I was 28 weeks pregnant and it was the nicest hol

redlou123 · 08/08/2022 23:27

I considered doing the same in March/April as I wanted one last indulgent AI holiday in the sun (without the alcohol side of course) and I was struggling to find somewhere warm enough at that time of the year. I was dissuaded from going to Mexico because of the limited medical facilities available and wouldn't have been able to forgive myself if something happened and I couldn't have gotten the care I needed. I considered Mauritius as well as a few others have suggested, but ended up ruling that out after my consultant said it wasn't advisable for me to go long haul because it was a higher risk pregnancy (I'd had 4 losses before this pregnancy).

We ended up going to the Canaries. It was a nice holiday but not quite what I was hoping for. I know it was the right choice for us though. I'm now 33 weeks and really wish I could spend another couple of weeks lying by a pool in the sunshine! Hope you have a lovely time, wherever you end up
