To go to Mexico pregnant

whoopthereitis11 · 08/08/2022 21:11

Thinking of going to Cancun last minute for some R&R but I’m 5 months pregnant.

I feel like we never hear about Zika anymore so my AIBU is AIBU to go to Cancun pregnant whilst Zika is a risk?

Would be staying in a 5 start resort (relevant as I think they must for mozzies)

I’ve been to Mexico many times to the type of hotel you describe but I would not go when pregnant, especially over half way through pregnancy.

Firstly, I was always worried about zika, yes the resorts spray and we wore a high percentage deet and insect repelling sun cream and still got the odd bite. I’m fact, we stopped going when we decided to try to conceive as was the advice at the time.

Personally, I would also worry about any potential problems with baby. I am fit and healthy and had no problems with my first baby but all of a sudden with this pregnancy started with super high blood pressure at 34 weeks and am now in and out of hospital. I wouldn’t want to be far from home.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 09/08/2022 08:31

You obvious have some concerns otherwise you wouldn’t post.

There are loads of adult only holidays not in Mexico. Get on the jet2 app and search under adult only holidays. If you’re willing to share more details, I’ll do it! I love looking for holidays but we won’t have the funds to book anything for ourselves anytime soon!

whoopthereitis11 · 09/08/2022 11:05

I find that the European AIs just aren’t the same level. I obviously care about my baby and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want to relax as once the baby comes we won’t get to do that type of holiday again for years.

I’ll look in to Mauritius- thanks everyone!

Ok Patiently what a horrible and borderline racist thing to say. I'm Mexican, have live in Mexico until 25 and go back every year... Number of times I've been a victim of crime = zero. Number of times I've been a victim of crime in the UK= 3.

Going back to the OP, I would go. Hurricane season is not as bad, and the last time I had terrible bites was about 14 years ago when I went to the jungle.

You can also go to the public hospital, regardless of what people.like rot hink they're decent and there's a treaty with the UK so all emergency treatment is free of charge (in a public hospital).

What hotel are you thinking of staying at?

@Onlyrainbows you are the only person bringing up race. The issue lies with your government.

calmlakes · 09/08/2022 16:21

I lived in Mexico for several years and love the country.
I wouldn't use a public hospital and none of my Mexican friends would.
There are very good private hospitals although they can't do the very complex procedures you might find in specialized hospitals in the USA or parts of Europe.

The only time I was a victim of crime was in the Yucatán when a police officer extorted money from us on a road stop.
Overall crime for tourists is low although the drug trade is causing issues in the Cancún area and is distressing if you are caught up in it. You are statistically very unlikely to be caught up.

There is a huge amount of corruption in the country, it riddles society but as a tourist you are unlikely to notice it.

I just wouldn't go because of the mozzies in that area at this time.

Mushroo · 09/08/2022 16:25

Go to Ikos in Greece - it’s better than Mexican style all inclusives.

or Stella island resort in Zante - it has over water bungalows.

TheHuntingoftheSnark · 09/08/2022 01:20

When I was there I wore deer the whole time and still got at least 3 bites every day.

Deet is crap, I think the mossies are immune to it now. My DP wore it and I wore incognito (which is citronella based), he got bitten and I didn’t! We both wore it in the rainforest of Costa Rica and didn’t get bitten. I’m allergic to mosquito bites so I’m a repellent connoisseur 😎

whoopthereitis11 · 09/08/2022 17:30

@Mushroo do they not both have kids? Looking for adults only

Vikinga · 09/08/2022 17:40

The world is collapsing with global warming and you're arseing to the other side of the world because you want to be waited on? Think of your baby, now and their lifetime and stay local. I'm sure there are lots of nice and extravagant hotels with a spa attached in your country you could take yourself to.

Mushroo · 09/08/2022 18:01

@whoopthereitis11 IKOS does but I went out of school holidays and there’s a separate adults pool and they sit you away from kids at
dinner so you don’t really notice them.

Stella Is adults only I think :)

Mushroo · 09/08/2022 18:03

Also look at Mayia resort in Rhodes - I have friends there atm and the pictures look amazing (also adults only :) )

1FootInTheRave · 09/08/2022 18:06

I would check the up to date zika advice first. Plus ensure you have adequate insurance for wherever you choose to travel.

There are loads of ai adult resorts in europe or turkey.

azure7 · 09/08/2022 18:17

I'm in Mexico right now (Cancun). Not a mosquito in sight! Nobody is being bitten here. Yes it's 30 degrees and humid - but it's going to be 35 degrees in London when we get back and that will be a lot less comfortable with no air con. It's been a bit cloudy actually and we've had rain twice this week. Hasn't rained in London for weeks, I hear. And what a frankly stupid and (I agree) borderline racist thing to say about crime in "Mexico." I'm surprised some people manage to get through life with attitudes like this. What about crime in "U.K." then? Oh, it depends where you go and the life you lead doesn't it?! Shocker!

Onlyrainbows · 09/08/2022 18:26

Thanks Azure many people talk out of ignorance. Mexico is a very classist/racist/elitist country. Mexican born people won't go to public schools and hospitals because they think they're not fir for purpose. I've attended both (my mother has a heart condition so no insurance will cover her) and have always used the public system with zero problems. I went to a private and a public university, and the public one was better.

MeenzAmRhoi · 09/08/2022 18:40

Can't believe you're contemplating this, op. Went for my honeymoon there and the hotel prayed the hotel every night to kill the mosquitos, and I used 50% deet the whole time, I still got two bites.

It really isn't worth it, I'm sorry!

AMIAMIBU · 09/08/2022 18:44

Yeah great idea..... what could possibly go wrong?

@azure7 the OP wasn’t talking about holidaying in the U.K. so why would I mention it? 🙄

USaYwHatNow · 09/08/2022 19:49

If you're looking into Mauritius, look into the Sofitel Flic en Flac. Amazing. Nothing too much trouble, small, and felt super exclusive. In Mauritius and the Maldives you'll struggle to find all inclusive, they tend to err on the side of a half board style stay we found.

MardyBumm · 09/08/2022 20:02

There are several adults only AI resorts in Greece...I went to one whilst 5 months pregnant. Short flight time (3 hours) and zika not a risk.

LibbyL92 · 09/08/2022 20:19

My only advice would possibly be closer to home should you need to fly home. Mexico is long haul.

a relative of mine was in the states 5 months pregnant, had complications. Said being 10 hours away by flight was absolute torture. She just wanted to get home quickly.

all was well in the end, thankfully.

Oiduntbelieveit · 10/08/2022 07:41

No, just go somewhere nice in Europe with good restaurants and a beach. That's if you live in UK.

JorisBonson · 10/08/2022 07:43

There are some incredible adults only places in the canaries, we stayed at Meliá Salinas on Lanzarote and it was beautiful.

AceSpades54321 · 10/08/2022 07:45

it would prob be cheaper to just check in to a UK spa hotel and have massages every day 🤷‍♀️ And 100% safer.

mumda · 10/08/2022 08:08

whoopthereitis11 · 08/08/2022 22:51

I just want an all inclusive where I can be waited on with no kids around. I can’t find anything in Europe 😭

Order your meals on just eat or deliveroo or have a housekeeper for a week.
