Inspired by an experience I had recently that has really rattled me. It's very outing as I've talked to everyone in my real life about it, it bothered me so much so I'll keep it brief.
I met some people I hadn't met before to buy an item from FB marketplace. Its a fairly rare item, and an expensive one so I went off to see if it was the right thing. The house was beautiful, it was a very large manor house that has been turned into huge expensive period flats, the grounds were amazing and the people were nice but a few odd things happened that were boundary testing and also some oddly timed things happened. While I was there I felt OK, it was a beautiful place, very quiet and entrancing but as I drove away I had this overwhelming sense of relief that I was leaving, and I was scanning my brain for any information I'd told them about myself in case they could find me. I am not a scared person or one prone to flights of fancy , this has never happened to me before. I had a physical reaction to the street they live on when I drove past some days later. My brain said "I'm never going up there again" and I keep having that feeling of having been in a bubble, it bursting and me being glad to be away from it. A weird story I know. Anyone had similar? I just know there was something deeply wrong there. I even asked my lovely neighbour to send a prayer up for me to protect me , and I would consider myself a non believer!

Not sure this is a sense of evil so much as a very strong gut feeling.

Several of my friends houseshared, and a man later moved in who quickly became great friends with all of them. He never said anything out of the ordinary, to me or anyone else and they all seemed to love him. I just had this feeling that something was wrong.

He was always coming on nights out with us and when I heard he was coming I just felt sick and panicky. I really tried to overcome it as he objectively seemed so inoffensive.

One night when I was told he wouldn't be there I was staying in their spare room (first time since this guy had moved in as I was scared to be asleep with him in the house).

Unbeknownst to me, he hadn't gone out after all and was instead in his room drinking and doing ketamine. The next thing I know he came into my room, locked the door behind him and started crawling towards me across the floor (on hands and feet rather than knees) with a contorted look of sheer hatred on his face. I've never had such a surreal yet terrifying experience - it was like a scene from a horror film.

Thankfully my friends heard me screaming and let me out, but they refused to stop bringing him along (saying it was just the drink and drugs that caused it). I didn't see much of them after that (and trust my instincts a bit more)!

This is fucking terrifying.

My brother's ex is pretty horrendous as was her house. As far to evil as I want to get although every day we pray for our niece and that someone somewhere will grant her access to some of her kind and normal family.

Mothership4two · 21/09/2022 01:00

One Sunday when I was walking with my BF/now DH up a cliff path that went through a park for some reason I went on up ahead of BF probably to check where the path went. I could no longer see BF and looking around realised what a lonely spot it was: no houses around just trees and the town/beach hundreds of feet below. I then felt this overwhelming sense of wrongness and fear and ran back down to my BF and we kept on walking but I still felt vulnerable. Later that day a woman was raped in that park and the rapist had camped out all weekend hidden in the trees waiting to pounce. I think he must have been watching me and my sixth sense realised I was being targeted/stalked. At the time I didn't see or hear anything amiss.

But in this sort of instance wouldn’t he be able to chase her at a run. Not slowly walk after her? I’ve read the gift of fear and most posts on this thread are spooky and I can agree with them but this one doesn’t make sense to me as her walking past him alone in the woods - if he wanted to harm her he could have and following her slowly as she ran doesn’t do much

I was clearly unfit and pushing a fairly heavy pushchair, although I felt like I was running fast I was entirely powered by adrenaline so, yes, he wasn’t as far behind me as I’d have liked. Also, once we were out on the road he would have drawn a lot of attention to himself by running after me but he was definitely following me.
As for how I knew he’d meant me harm, I’d seen that look before as a 15 year old walking back to school after lunch and having my way blocked by a slightly unkempt man. I was frozen in fear and, long story short, was assaulted by him. I blamed myself for years for freezing and not running away so ‘allowing’ what happened to happen.

Jaffacats · 21/09/2022 09:20

Always trust your instincts, they’re usually more ahead than the rational part. What you described sounded very predatory. You were on their turf and they were controlling the situation with social graces and generosity to keep you longer than was necessary. Introducing you to another person increased the power imbalance and kept you in place longer. And then they skewed the social situation by overriding your boundaries. Do you think the item appealed more to women than men?

I’ve had a number of really unpleasant situations with people who would be regarded as ‘good’ people. My sense with a couple of them was that if the situation was right they would’ve done me a lot of harm. That’s not paranoia, it was based on numerous incidents and me putting blocks in place. These sorts of people enjoy predatory power but fear being witnessed.

Which is exactly what you’re now doing?

I haven’t called her a knob and it’s a public thread I am entitled to join in on. This whole ‘if you disagree you can’t post’ thing is bollocks and not the point of MN. I want to get to the bottom of what these people actually did wrong to deserve to be called evil as it’s all wish washy rubbish.

Perhaps you should get a life while you're at it.

Oh FGS, calm down! I just thought the whole situation was absurd and got a laugh out of the "I wish you well" banter.

This thread is a subject I am greatly interested in and I've really enjoyed (for lack of a better word) reading everyone's personal stories and opinions on the subject of the existence of evil. And then you go and jump down my throat and accuse me of being creepy!

Sheesh...no wonder the rest of the webs says the women on MN are nuts...

Redqueenheart · 21/09/2022 12:43

Unfortunately people who are truly evil often can mask their true nature behind charm, at least at the beginning. Then you start picking up on things that are not quite right with them.

I have met people who could be described as sociopath/psychopaths and the high functioning ones are very hard to spot. They are not weirdos on street corners they look quite normal from the outside.

Anyway, back to the OP I do believe our instinct tells us something and that she should listen to that to keep ourselves safe. And that objects and places do retain a part of the people who own them or lived in them and that some of us can pick up on that.

Mindmyown · 21/09/2022 13:24

I just remembered another one, not about me but my dad.
There's a block of flats in my hometown and in it there is "locked room" in a certain apartment. This all occurred while I live at home so a good 15 years or so ago. We all heard a rumour bout a locked room and a haunting in this block. My dad knew the owner of the building and my dad being curious asked if it was true & turns out it was and my dad let curiosity get the better of him and asked to go see it.

So off he went with this man and came back an hour later, pure pale, he said the moment he walked into the apartment the on the back of his neck stood high, and he got this unexplained urge to run.. this was during broad daylight on a gorgeous summer day, but the apartment was so cold he had to breath on his hands to warm up. The owner asked if he wanted to see the lock room so he does and he said there was this huge painting of Satan on the wall and paint was still wet, beside the wall were rollers and a huge gallon of cream wall paint. The owner explained no matter how many times they tried stripping the paint off the wall it won't budge and painting over it didn't work because it just came through... he opened the gallon of paint and submerged the roller, pulled it out and ran a thick coat a cross the image on the wall, dad said they just stood there then watching the thick coat just disappear like it was being swallowed by the red and black image. The floor and ceiling had really bad scorch marks and smoke damage. This was a ground floor apartment and the tennents above asked to move apartments because the room above the lock room was always freezing and tennent complained about having visable frost breath in that room even in the height of summer.
My dad said he couldn't get out of there fast enough and by the time they got outside in fresh air and sunshine the difference in temperature hit him and he felt physically sick, the owner was telling him about the previous tennents, presumably those responsible for the image, the were foreign nationals, a family, he knew from the start the husband was a piece of work just from the vibe he gave off... he actually was extremely violent and cruel against his wife, think beatings, burnings, starving her etc. He stabbed her repeatedly in the living room in front of there small child... she survived the attack and he was arrested and charged after all the abuse came to light, poor girl apparently had severe burns to her legs and was physically mutilated in awful ways that left her with many scars and "carvings" on her body.
My dad was the least "woo" person I ever knew, he would often laugh at other people's "scary" encounters calling it their imagination, but this experience changed him, now he loves all paranormal stuff... said there isn't enough money in the world to offer him to go back in that apartment, he said whatsever there is just pure evil he was so shook he got a blessing from the priest because he was having nightmares about it ... I always ask about the apartment when I'm home for a visit, building owner is still my dad's friend, that room is still locked, image is still on the wall and he refuses to rent the apparatment, he also has trouble with the apartment above it, people just feeling off/ill, nobody lasts longer then a couple of weeks before asking to swap apartments, he has a general rule not to rent that apartment to anyone with kids as the room above the lock room is just a wee box room that would normally be a kids room.

@Aussiegirl123456 it's no lie, we often bring it up and chat about it, he even jokes now when ever he gets a new heavy winter coat, that it's almost warm enough to chance going back in there again... I asked him after the encounter if I can go see it and he said no way, that whatever is in there should be left far alone...

That is so insane and chilling (literally and metaphorically), wow goodness me. A real life horror. Your dad is definitely wise not letting you go in there.

Backthetruckup · 21/09/2022 14:27

Nowhere near as dramatic as Mindmyown but while visiting Ireland I once stayed in a small, very old hotel on my own. I didn't feel anything at first, just dumped the suitcase and went out for the night. When I got back and went to bed the atmosphere changed and felt very heavy and oppressive. It was as though someone or something was watching from the end of the bed. I kept the light on and spent the whole night under the duvet trying to get some sleep and hotfooted it out of there first thing (I'm not usually a big wimp!).

potniatheron · 21/09/2022 14:32

Another one from me. This happened when I was very young, about 8 or 9 but has always stuck with me.

There were some playing fields near our house when I was growing up and bordering them was a patch of land we kids called 'the woods'. It wasn't a woods at all, it was actually a wasteground with a few straggly trees on it and where locals often dumped household rubbish. We local kids often played there and treasure hunted through the rubbish.

I was in 'the woods' with two other friends, it was a very quiet day, the woods and adjoining paying fields were deserted. At some point I happened to look up and saw a figure, a man dressed in black, standing about 300 metres away behind a park bench. He was facing us and behaving a bit strangely - ducking behind the bench and then popping up again whilst staring at us. As if he were playing peek a boo.

He gave me an odd vibe but I carried on playing. A little while later - I'm not sure how long - we heard a sound, looked up and there was the exact same man about 20 metres away, standing behind a tree and staring dead on at us. We'd not been aware of him approaching across the field; he popped up seemingly out of nowhere. The three of us, without exchanging a word, all got the same feeling and we just turned around and legged it out of there.

On the way home we all talked about how we'd got a creepy feeling and all simultaneously decided we needed to run, without syaing anything to each other.

Creepy as hell.

Squirrelsquirrel · 22/09/2022 20:37

I was walking alone over a hilly/twisting path with bushes down the side. Limited vision but busy so you'd pass people every few minutes. Felt quite safe and plesasnt.

Walked into a clearing which was more open (and theoretically more safe). No more bushes, very visible etc but in the middle I suddenly felt really really uncomfortable. I could see a couple of dog walkers heading towards me but I felt really odd.

Then I could hear heavy breathing coming up behind me. Heavy, like out of breath from walking up the steep path rather than running up behind me so I thought it was another walker. But no footsteps. I suddenly felt sick and then felt like "the breather" was behind me so I stepped aside to let them pass. Nobody there. I had a look around but nothing unusual. As I say I was walking in the middle of the clearing so there was nowhere to hide.

I was feeling a bit scared but could still see people ahead.

I walked a bit faster. I could still hear heavy breathing and felt like someone was trying to pass. I suddenly stopped and looked behind me but still nothing. They felt right next to me.

I walked quickly on listening to someone breathing. Then I saw something out of the corner of my eye.

I ran out of the clearing and to the people. As soon as I was out of the clearing I felt normal again.

They passed and I stopped and caught my breath and watched them. Their dogs had seemed perfectly behaved but as soon as they got to the clearing they went crazy barking and running around and their owners couldn't control them.

No idea what it was about. There was nowhere for anyone to hide. However in hindsight I probably should have run sooner than I did.

Never went back there.

I need to stop reading this (and associated threads) late at night! It’s messing with my head!

Not evil, but… on Tuesday night I woke up hearing panting and scratching on the floorboards. I thought our dog had gotten into the bedroom and I nudged DH to check. Dog wasn’t there. I should add that in 2 years of having him our dog has only been in our room once at night.

On Wednesday night my dd woke up with a bad nose bleed. I brought her into our bed as she was distressed and needed help with it. After she’d calmed down she was cuddling me and staring at me. She asked me why I turned into a rainbow. I asked her yesterday morning about it and she said she couldn’t see me, there was a rainbow and I’d disappeared. Obviously she must have been dreaming/ hallucinating but her eyes were open. I have bad health anxiety and it shit me up!

Then last night there was a bang, not other noise. DH woke and sat bolt upright (he never usually wakes at noise in the night). Our dog was in the bedroom! Our bedroom door had been closed and the sitting room door (where dog sleeps) was also closed. Our dog is tiny and can’t jump on handles. It was as though someone had opened the door and put the dog in.

Interesting thread. I can't recall any experiences where I've felt evil and in fact seem to be completely out of tune in that regard. I know of two people who have committed evil acts and I for both people I never got an inkling of anything of untoward about them. Maybe it is because I wasn't in danger from these people.

Being so oblivious though isn't great. I used to walk my then pup/young dog along fairly desolate footpaths and fields while practicing his recall and never felt unnerved. Looking through some old videos recently you can see a (presumably) man hiding in bushes and at one point he peeks out - just as the camera pans round as I was filming the dog. That unsettled me because I was none the wiser. Literally no sense of being watched, no intuition, zilch.

That's incredibly creepy!

This is why we do not allow second hand objects in our home. We know all too well what you experienced and you are not crazy. Do not go back to that place and I'd be careful about second hand objects in the future. Once they are in your home, it could be a different story.

I know I'm not crazy! My house is full of second hand finds. I rarely buy new.

I did once bring home something I knew full well to be trouble (and it was!) but I am well able to deal with such things now.

I do rather regret having let my auction bargain get away but it was the right thing to do at the time. I'd love to come across it now though.
