Bollocks I've ballsed up

I've had so much on recently. I have had cancer and Im finishing treatment this week I've been meaning to pay the car tax bill, it's just completely escaped me with all the crap I've had to keep on top of (not an excuse I know)

DH is driving me home from the marsden on Monday, it's a 5 hour trip and the fucking car tax runs out on Monday. Will he get pulled over? I know it's an offence to not pay for car tax. Tbh he could have sorted it and didn't so it's not all on me:

We're there now and I've just gone to sort it thinking 'oh fuck that needs doing' and it's can't be done without the letter which is on the kitchen table 5 hours away, or the log book also 5 hours away.

If we go through many anpr cameras on Monday (speed limit cameras etc) will we get 10+ fines? This is a nightmare. My mum has a spare key but I don't feel like I can ask her to drive for 45 mins to get me an 11 digit code on a piece of paper 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I didn't mean the tax system, sorry. I meant the system that Police etc. use.

Police access the same systems as everyone else. It's as up to date as it can possibly be.

Of course people should worry.

Not having Tax invalidates your insurance so anyone without tax is driving without cover.

Tax - DVLA prosecute untaxed vehicles but you’re sent a reminder and then a fixed penalty first. It’s only if the fixed penalty nor the tax is up to date that it would progress to court.

Insurance - depends on your policy documents. Worst case scenario they would only cover third party losses.

Its Friday, you’ve got today and the weekend to sort it, I can’t see what the problem is.

@MsMiaWallace

Can only get prosecuted if 2 months & 2 days out of tax.

I missed this earlier, can you evidence this?

Doubtful as I'm 99.999999999% sure it's bollocks.

Used to be a 5 day grace period for paper discs allowing for post etc, but can you imagine if everyone got 2 months and 2 days? Everyone would be going for a couple of free months 😂😂

Thinkingblonde · 29/07/2022 12:39

Happened to me, three weeks after renewal date. All they did was backdate the tax to the beginning of the month.
Id been driving round untaxed as I’d forgotten all about it.

They back date the tax to the date it was due so no one gets free months of road tax.

Thinkingblonde · 29/07/2022 12:43

If I was your mum I’d drive 90 minutes round trip to stop you getting a fine

Fair comment.

Though there is no grace period. If you're spotted untaxed you will be clamped and fined.

Amei · 29/07/2022 13:31

My boyfriend accidentally had no tax for 7 months and he was never pulled!

NippySweetie16 · 30/07/2022 18:10

Don't panic, really. Deal with it when you can. I was once pulled over and reminded very nicely by a police woman - I had completely forgotten about road tax and was months late. And wishing you all best for your continued recovery xx

Yayhelen · 30/07/2022 18:43

Genuinely forgot to MOT my car and only realised about 4 months later when I went to renew my tax. Didn’t get pulled or fined (not quite the same I know). Was horrified when I realised and have never forgotten again.

Theo1756 · 30/07/2022 18:50

We forgot to do our car tax a few weeks ago. Actually we filled it all in but for some reason forgot to click the final submission. Got a warning letter 2 weeks later. Paid and no harm done. You’ll be fine. Just pay it when you get home.

Dajeeling · 30/07/2022 18:54

You get a warning letter a few weeks after… then you set it up, pay the arrears and all is forgiven.

Don’t ask me how I know this 😂😂

LoisLane66 · 30/07/2022 18:55

Best to put a reminder on your mobile calendar app for a few days before it runs out and add a ringtone to it. If you have a decent phone it should also show up on your home screen.

Nurgleturtle · 30/07/2022 18:58

you can pay your car tax online, if you need the 11 digit code can your mum drive to get it and text it to you? failing this phone them and explain just to cover your back you cannot drive far without tax but you can without an mot if your on the way to the test centre

topcat2014 · 30/07/2022 18:59

Car tax is not a moving traffic offence. You don't get points for it. Civil issue

MOT and insurance are moving traffic offences. You get points

womaninatightspot · 30/07/2022 19:09

I forgot to renew car tax thought it was on automatic renew. Only twigged when they didn’t collect the dd. I thought I might get a fine but nada. When you pay it backdates you 1st of the month so I was covered retrospectively perhaps? If you renew on Monday you’ll have to pay for an extra month better to wait till Tuesday.

alnawire · 30/07/2022 19:17

If you renew on Monday you’ll have to pay for an extra month better to wait till Tuesday.

It makes no difference! It expires on 31st July.

Fluffmum · 30/07/2022 19:18

I forgot to renew mine as I had a load of family drama for 6 months and nothing happened

Milesfromhome · 30/07/2022 19:28

For reasons too long to go into we had an untaxed car for two years...I realised in the end and put it right but nobody picked it up...no recommending you go without it but just our experience....

sunlight81 · 30/07/2022 19:36

U get a good 15days to get it sorted. Used to run to the wire (and over) in my 20s as I was so skint and never got pulled over.

I suggest paying by DD from now on. Spreading the cost helps and ensures u don't forget

Blantw · 30/07/2022 19:40

Pay online

alnawire · 30/07/2022 19:41

Blantw · 30/07/2022 19:40

Pay online

Did you read the OP? They can't pay online without the code, which is in the letter, at home.

Blantw · 30/07/2022 19:43

Missed that bit.

PurpleFlower1983 · 30/07/2022 19:52

You can do it without the letter, I once completely forgot to pay mine, I didn’t actually get the letter bizarrely but I remembered at random driving to work one morning. It was over 2 months over due! I pulled straight over and phoned the DVLA, the man on the phone was massively apologetic that the system had fined me £45 while I was just massively relieved to have got it sorted. I’ve paid by DD monthly ever since to stop it happening again!

BambamD · 30/07/2022 19:56

You’ll be fine you have 2 weeks grace at least . Don’t panic . I forgot to do mine and nothing happened. Concentrate on getting better x
