I've had so much on recently. I have had cancer and Im finishing treatment this week I've been meaning to pay the car tax bill, it's just completely escaped me with all the crap I've had to keep on top of (not an excuse I know)

DH is driving me home from the marsden on Monday, it's a 5 hour trip and the fucking car tax runs out on Monday. Will he get pulled over? I know it's an offence to not pay for car tax. Tbh he could have sorted it and didn't so it's not all on me:

We're there now and I've just gone to sort it thinking 'oh fuck that needs doing' and it's can't be done without the letter which is on the kitchen table 5 hours away, or the log book also 5 hours away.

If we go through many anpr cameras on Monday (speed limit cameras etc) will we get 10+ fines? This is a nightmare. My mum has a spare key but I don't feel like I can ask her to drive for 45 mins to get me an 11 digit code on a piece of paper 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

@Ohthatsexciting should have added the link, www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

Yes but that is only if failed and remained failed

ie most have their cars MOT-Ed, that garage tells them if they would fail on something and quotes to repair. Does the repair. Does the mot and it passes.

starfishmummy · 29/07/2022 09:53

DoeDoesncar tax run out at month end. So midnight on sunday. Id get your mum to get you the number.

Ohthatsexciting · 29/07/2022 09:37

Out of interest @seramum how on earth would he have known all this stuff! It’s not recorded why you have failed an mot.

It is recorded and visible online

www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

seramum · 29/07/2022 09:54

"Yes but that is only if failed and remained failed"

No, the pic below is my car that failed for a faulty light a couple of years ago. They immediately replaced the light redid the MOT and it passed the same day.

seramum · 29/07/2022 09:52

Yeah it does @Ohthatsexciting. It looks a bit like the photo attached. Never knew of the website until said student told me all about it. However, it is very useful if you are buying a second hand car. I used it a lot when purchasing my daughter's first car.

but when you go for your mot, the garage will tell you of going to fail and what needs to be done to pass. Then you decide whether you’re going to or not. If not, you fail the mot and it goes on the database.

so only goes on database if you actively decide not to get the car repaired to pass the mot

So you paid for 2 MOTs?

my car is not on it. Yet it has “failed” last three MOTs ie garage call and say needs x y and z done In order to pass. I say “go for it” then they issue the cert

LilacLaurel · 29/07/2022 09:56

@Ohthatsexciting no it's not, I can view my cars passes on there and then can view the certificate

Nope only ever paid for one MOT. That's the way my car garage has always done it.

Yea that's how all garages did it I thought, it fails they fix and and re test it for free.

Sorry to derail your thread OP!

No - any fail is recorded. No matter when you have it repaired.

Have a look at any car history - you'll see every single MOT now. Not just the "quickly repaired a fault" passes. You an see by the date of the retest.

Yes all passes!

we are talking about failing mots

i would have failed last three note but garage ring and say what needs to be addressed, I say go ahead, and then they pass. So on my history - all passes

But two different garages here covering three years and both have rung to say “ok this needs to be fixed in order to pass”
I say “please go ahead”
they fix
i pass the mot

i pay for one mot
and on my history I have only had passes for last three years

That's how ours works too.

They tell you it's failed and on what and then give price and retest for free. You don't pay for two MOTS

I think you have a dodgy MOT centre @Ohthatsexciting. That's not the proper protocol.

Ohthatsexciting · 29/07/2022 10:05

Sorry didn’t mean to post it

maybe I have go “lucky” (even though one is a Ford official garage)

as never failed according to my history

but I have always been called to say - this needs to be fixed in order to pass!

Ohthatsexciting · 29/07/2022 10:06

One of the two was a Ford official garage (you know the huge ones that just deal in Ford)

Retirebeforefifty2023 · 29/07/2022 10:08

I do not think your insurance is valid if you do not have your car taxed. Not 100% sure if this is true.

ReallyDoc · 29/07/2022 09:23

Gosh you're all very well behaved and efficient. I would just wing it and do it when you get home. I'm sure the DVLA wish their system was able to catch you the minute your car leaves the house but given the thousands of untaxed vehicles on the roads I doubt that v much.

Me too, wing it and play dumb if caught 😂 But panic the whole time I'm driving though in case I'm caught and thrown in jail 🙄😂

alnawire · 29/07/2022 10:09

@Ohthatsexciting

They sound dodgy if anything. They don't know exactly what it needs to pass an MOT until they do the MOT. Legally that first MOT is a fail, then they fix, then they retest and you get a pass. BOTH should show up online however you would only pay for one MOT, which is standard. If your garage are calling you and telling you it needs work which hasn't been evidenced by a failed MOT I would be questioning the garage.

What if you didn't want that garage to do the work and wanted to shop around? I know people who do that, get the fail, go elsewhere for the work and take their failed MOT slip, as they know a cheaper place and then have a free retest at original place.

How would that work if your garage doesn't fail as they should. If you said you will have the work done elsewhere would they then fail the car?

Mischance · 29/07/2022 10:12

Relax - I discovered mine was out of date when I went to get an MOT and it could not be done! - this was months and months too late. I just did it there and then and all was well. I had driven hundreds of miles by that time in blissful ignorance!

I am glad you are on your last treatment - lots of good luck with that.

Changes17 · 29/07/2022 10:14

Will be fine till the end of Monday at the very least - that will be the last day you are covered. Probably fine for a few days after that too - I've forgotten to renew online for anything up to a week and it's been fine.

The car will not be covered on Monday. Monday is 1st August. The tax will expire 31 July.

That's my understanding too. If you have a known fault, then of course they fix it before doing the MOT. But once they start the MOT any faults discovered at this stage (like my faulty headlight) will register as a fail, will then be fixed and re-MOTed.
