There is an AIBU here - but really it's posting for traffic

Russia is having 'maintainance issues' so has reduced the gas flow to Europe to a low level.

Gas prices have soared again.

Price cap prediction - £3850 - about 3 x what it was a year ago.

This is going to affect all of us

The shit will truly hit the fan with this. Schools are looking at 100k plus in bills, hospitals, drs. Businesses which will have less money to pay staff. I can only foresee a massive economic collapse in this country.

Daysy · 27/07/2022 20:46

DH has just told me ours is going to rise 80% from where it is now in October so at least 6k a year.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 27/07/2022 20:46

It’s terrifying and yet all new sites such as the Dm focus on is the Tory Leadership contest. This is unprecedented. I’m surprised this isn’t all over the news to be honest. Why aren’t there any Cobra meetings on this? It’s such a massive threat to so many people. I just can’t understand the lack of action.

The cost to people and to businesses is going to be massive.

Because sadly the media are not on our side.

I am absolutely terrified about these bills. I actually think there needs to be civil unrest

RudsyFarmer · 27/07/2022 20:48

What we need is a way to generate energy from the house with an exercise bike. Then we could get exercise and save money at the same time.

No one will have he energy to exercise because lots of people already can't afford to eat.

TibetanTerrah · 27/07/2022 20:51

I read on Sky News today that January's energy bill will average £500 just for the one month.

Hmmph · 27/07/2022 20:52

No Cobra meetings as noone is actually running the country at the moment.

We are now the worst performing country economically bar Russia - thanks to Brexit. And now this. We are f*cked. I worry about what the future holds for my children and if things carry on as they are I will be encouraging them to emigrate to another country

Thisismynamenow · 27/07/2022 20:55

I feel so sick. I've got a 3 month old and terrified about how to keep him warm over the winter.

cakeorwine · 27/07/2022 20:55

We should be looking at reducing our energy usage now and seeing what gas we can store for winter.

But I don't think we have much gas storage available

It’s really scary. Government needs to act now. We should have invested so much more in being more self sufficient. Germany are considering that they might have to ration energy so presumably that will have to happen in light of today’s news?

nellytheelephant1980 · 27/07/2022 20:56

@Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase Where would you advise them to go? We would like tk leave. This country is an absolute misery

Russia has the whole world over a barrel, i think alot of places are the same

No, they really aren’t. It’s just the Tory owned press have gaslit you to think that because - Brexit.

cakeorwine · 27/07/2022 21:02

It will seem unfair if people can afford to use energy on non essential uses whilst a lot of society struggle to heat their homes or to have energy to cook their food.

I don't know how you ration that.

I read on Sky News today that January's energy bill will average £500 just for the one month.

If they let it reach that level then they can expect civil unrest. I’m fortunate enough to earn a reasonable salary but an energy bill of £6k per year (on the back of food price increases and interest rate rises) will be crippling to so many. Remember the London riots of 2011? I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more of that in the next year. Sunak has just promised a vat cut on energy bills if he gets in as on. What a joke - all that will happen is the energy companies will increase the price by the same amount within days of it coming into effect. Drop in the ocean. If that’s the best that the ruling class can come up with then god help us!

cakeorwine · 27/07/2022 21:03

Indeed. Russia has the gas. We need the gas. The thought was that economically Russia needed us as we brought their gas. It's like a game of chicken at the moment - with severe consequences

cakeorwine · 27/07/2022 21:05

And if people are spending their money on energy, then they aren't spending their money on other things. Which is bad for our economy

I think there is a genuine lack of insight at the highest levels of government, as to the average household budget in this country.
So I don't think they will do anything to attempt to prevent the coming crisis, as they just can't see it. They will react later, when consumer spending has completely crashed through the floor and/or at the first rumblings of civil unrest.

Have you ever heard of the USA? It’s a small province borders Luxembourg I think… 🙄inflation running at 9.6%, people can’t afford food or energy.

stop beating your silly drum and try paying attention to the world at large.

What do you propose the government should do?

MarshaBradyo · 27/07/2022 21:09

Are people fixing their rates?

We got a letter today for first time offering this, it’s double what we usually pay
