Energy bill price cap predicted to go to £3850 - 3 x what it was a year ago

There is an AIBU here - but really it's posting for traffic

Russia is having 'maintainance issues' so has reduced the gas flow to Europe to a low level.

Gas prices have soared again.

Price cap prediction - £3850 - about 3 x what it was a year ago.

This is going to affect all of us

My parents and I were talking about this today, we live close by and think in the winter we will largely hunker down at there's and I'll contribute towards the food costs so that they can cook dinner there as its easier and a lot cheaper to cook for 5 (instead of 2 at my house and 3 at there's). Fortunately my brother works for a major supermarket so we get 10% Family discount which is buffering some of the price rises at the minute

That's a sensible idea. Hunker up and share resources.

Why would I screen shot anything? For the people who find it absolutely impossible to read. I live in a 5 bed detached (6 people). I live in a large house. Paying £180 in the summer and not hit by any price rises the prediction for my house is going to be nearly 10k. It’s really not that hard to work it out.

Some one else on here has said they are expecting bills of 6k in Oct. Why are you not being horrible to them? Demanding screenshots off them?

if you can’t apply critical thinking without calling names; that’s not my problem.

Because you are grossly over exaggerating or outright lying, to get people into a froth. Why? For your own weird pleasure or to ‘prove’ your spouting over Brexit hasn’t been in vain (even though people have already told you this is a GLOBAL issue).
If by some stretch you are telling the truth, then I suggest you either downsize or be a little more thrifty with your energy use.

Take it seriously.

Look at rationing so we have enough energy for people to meet their basic needs.

That could be done by price control levels. So you pay a certain amount for so many KWH depending on your situation and then pay more above that.

Radical ideas - it's cheaper to cook, eat and be warm with more people. There is an opportunity for communal living during the day

The tax system - are there people who are wealthy and who don't pay much tax. Or companies.

Look at spending less elsewhere so they can support more people.

Who are the people who are wealthy but don’t pay much tax?

Bloodyel · 27/07/2022 22:08

Hopefully we will get nuked and at least the radiation will provide some energy

PurpleFlower1983 · 27/07/2022 22:09

It’s scary. I’ve just upped my DD to £300 a month from £220 to try and get a head start on what’s coming. It will likely go up another £50 by October though.

Ahh so you don’t like me because of a political statement. I get it. That’s clearer. Wow I never knew how the B word was a swear word on here and would cause such nastiness.

I am telling the truth and I won’t be downsizing as we can afford it. Thanks though. Doesn’t mean I’m not concerned for those who really can’t afford it.

BunsyGirl · 27/07/2022 22:10

@Lipsandlashes we currently pay £177 per month for electricity and £129 for gas (LPG). We have been offered a new fixed rate of around £450 per month for electricity. If our gas goes up to the same amount we will be looking at around £10k in energy charges per year. We are also in a large five bed house. Only four of us but DH and I both work full time from home.

Sexismdoesntrule · 27/07/2022 22:11

Suppose I better stop tumble drying? 🥹

Narwhalelife · 27/07/2022 22:12

It’s shocking because it’s a rise in:

  • energy prices

  • food prices

  • fuel (although have seen in come down a couple of pence last couple of days!)

  • mortgage rates

  • rent prices

  • costs of insurance - for anything!

  • and wages are stagnating at best and falling at worst.

And it doesn’t matter who is in power in any country - they don’t care. It’s a race to the bottom.

I’m training my dogs ready for the impeding collapse of civilisation - ie they can swim, carry a small back pack, hunt and are super obedient - not trained to attack the rich (yet)🤣

belge2 · 27/07/2022 22:17

I pay €600 a month in Belgium for a 5 bed draughty house. It's already doubled. Cannot afford to pay more so not quite sure how that will work out! Belgian energy costs have always been huge compared to UK but they are now totally crazy

Nothing to do with your political stance - you have no bloody clue how I voted. I just don’t like people who sensationalise things to try and frighten other people. And all the time you are sitting pretty without having to worry how you are going to afford any increases

cakeorwine · 27/07/2022 22:18

News sites are just saying we should hope for a mild winter.....

Octopus is predicting we'll be paying £4000 over the next twelve months😧 We're a family of 4 in a 3 bed.
We used to pay approx £1200 a year before the prices started going up.

Ignoring the other poster then who has similar outgoings and forecasts

Thought so.

popcornfrenzy · 27/07/2022 22:23

I currently pay £102 for both gas and electric. I'm on Octopus Agile so the price of electricity goes up and down depending on the time. I set my washing machine and dishwasher to run at the cheaper times. I also overpay so I'll have a buffer for winter. I'm a single parent running a 40's built 3 bedroom house. If it gets too bad in winter then extra jumpers, blankets and socks will come into play.

woodhill · 27/07/2022 22:23

Can't we get the gas out of the North Sea again

Cosmos123 · 27/07/2022 22:25

Try to insulate the house however you can afford now.
Roof
Wall
Floors.
Deal with draughts through windows.
Invest in thick curtains.
Try charity shops, ebay facebook market place.

Get fleece blankets
Thermal underwear
Oodies

Hotwater bottles
Air frier for cheaper cooking.
A dehumdifier. This takes out moisture from the Air when drying clothes. Also if the air is dry in the room it will heat up quickly.

SweetcornFritter · 27/07/2022 22:27

This is the advice from Octopus:

You need to know this 👇

Energy prices are at record highs, and most homes will be better off staying with their current energy supplier right now.

If your fixed term is coming to an end, don't choose a new tariff or switch supplier.

Instead, let your supplier automatically move you to their default tariff, so your prices are protected by the Government's Energy Price Cap.

upliftingtwisting · 27/07/2022 22:28

It’s extremely alarming that the price cap is going up by 78% in a October. Really worrying.

ClassSize2022 · 27/07/2022 22:30

Currently holidaying in France - €2 diesal per litre and food is ridiculously expensive in restaurants and super markets

upliftingtwisting · 27/07/2022 22:30

Outoutoutshout · 27/07/2022 21:31

I genuinely have no idea how people are paying so much. My direct debit is £85 a month and I'm well in credit. I use about £40 a month total (gas and elec) even with the price hikes. My house is relatively small but is old and drafty. Unless people are living in mansions with families of 15 people I honestly don't know how you can use hundreds of pounds of fuel a month.

Sounds like you are still on a fixed deal. Anyone out of a fixed deal, on a variable rate had huge increase if 54% in April. Another 78% is predicted in October plus another increase in January.

supadupapupascupa · 27/07/2022 22:31

78%??? I thought it was 65% :-(

rainingsnoring · 27/07/2022 22:32

Agree @cakeorwine . I don't think a lot of people realise how serious this is and how much impact it will have. It's not just households but businesses who are not protected by the price cap. This is in combination with the cost of everything going up, people wanting higher wages (understandably) and the cost of borrowing rising.
It's not all caused by Putin either. That's obviously what the Tory Party want you to believe but it's not true. The cost of energy was already rising significantly. The sanctions were not going to work in our favour but none of the Western leaders thought about that in their arrogance.
As the OP said, the government need to take this more seriously instead of acting like the muppet show plus hangers on.
