Energy bill price cap predicted to go to £3850 - 3 x what it was a year ago

There is an AIBU here - but really it's posting for traffic

Russia is having 'maintainance issues' so has reduced the gas flow to Europe to a low level.

Gas prices have soared again.

Price cap prediction - £3850 - about 3 x what it was a year ago.

This is going to affect all of us

We should be looking at reducing our energy usage now and seeing what gas we can store for winter.

But I don't think we have much gas storage available

No we don’t, because we got rid of our gas storage. Who on earth thought that was a good idea?!

Have you ever heard of the USA? It’s a small province borders Luxembourg I think… 🙄inflation running at 9.6%, people can’t afford food or energy.

stop beating your silly drum and try paying attention to the world at large.

Are you usually so nasty? The facts are out there. We inflicted a brutal wound on ourselves via Brexit which is making it a whole lot worse.. would hope I’ve heard of America having family out there.

Jog on and go and attempt to patronise someone else. Are you 12?

Honestly - Brexit just adds further shit onto this. We have a really crap situation and Brexit just adds fuel to what is - as you say - an international problem.

But this is not a Brexit thread. This is a thread about massively increased energy costs coming in a few months time - and it's not being talked about much.

It's like Joseph and his dreams or Cassandra - and no one in Government seems concerned over the impending iceberg coming towards us.

Are people fixing their rates?

We got a letter today for first time offering this, it’s double what we usually pay

Fixed until Sept 2023 crystal ball shows increase from 2.5k to 10k

cakeorwine · 27/07/2022 21:15

gryilla · 27/07/2022 21:09

What do you propose the government should do?

Take it seriously.

Look at rationing so we have enough energy for people to meet their basic needs.

That could be done by price control levels. So you pay a certain amount for so many KWH depending on your situation and then pay more above that.

Radical ideas - it's cheaper to cook, eat and be warm with more people. There is an opportunity for communal living during the day

The tax system - are there people who are wealthy and who don't pay much tax. Or companies.

Look at spending less elsewhere so they can support more people.

@Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase Where would you advise them to go? We would like tk leave. This country is an absolute misery

France, possibly. Although from what I can gather there is a lot of political uncertainty in France at the moment. I think it’s good for kids to have a second language to give them the option to do so if the need arises. I will be encouraging both of my children to learn French and Spanish. Even Australia is in a precarious position at the moment due to their location, proximity and ties to Taiwan and the impending threat from China.

We live in very uncertain times it seems.

MasterGland · 27/07/2022 21:19

My concern is the standing charge. If this doubles again, it will be scandalous. It penalises the poorest in society, and limits your ability to reduce your bill by curtailing your usage.

My neighbour was asking me this morning if I knew how to go about being disconnected from the gas network...

RB68 · 27/07/2022 21:19

I think we need a fundamental change in how we cook and heat homes. Our housing stock is terrible and houses built as cheaply as possible rather than with the long term cost of ownership taken into account.

How inefficient is oven and hob cooking - all the wasted heat.

We need to radically look at how we keep food (fridges and freezers) how we cook it and how we heat our homes and provide hot water - it is all very inefficient at the moment.

Then you add on how we use electricity in the home - or rather waste it with hairdryers and stylers, phone charging and other electronics, the way TVs and so on use electricity as well.

I am terrified of the bills and we are having a new more efficient boiler fitted (alth still LPG unfortunately) we will have solar and batteries installed and I will be looking seriously at all our electronic equipment and asking what we can do without.

We have actually been spoilt over the last 30 yrs or so regarding the cost of these essentials.

RainCloud · 27/07/2022 21:20

So worrying.

wonderstuff · 27/07/2022 21:20

There has been a committee on this in parliament, they proposed a massive campaign to insulate homes before the winter. LBC were reporting on it yesterday, maybe day before.

We are now the worst performing country economically bar Russia - thanks to Brexit. And now this. We are f*cked. I worry about what the future holds for my children and if things carry on as they are I will be encouraging them to emigrate to another country

The worst country economically bar Russia?! What, globally? On what basis?

Much as I’d love to be in Scandinavia, and as crap as the next couple of years are going to be, there are many many worse places than the U.K.

roses2 · 27/07/2022 21:23

It's a Europe problem not just UK. Their rates are going up too.

People can complain as much as they want but what's the long term solution? I honestly don't think there is one unless we move to renewable.

As a family we are used to camping so I'm quite good at wearing extra layers and cooking meals on one gas ring, but dear God, its no way to live through a winter 🙄. I can't imagine how the vulnerable will cope.
Meanwhile we concern ourselves with the Tory leadership campaign and pronouns.

GreenLunchBox · 27/07/2022 21:28

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 27/07/2022 20:46

It’s terrifying and yet all new sites such as the Dm focus on is the Tory Leadership contest. This is unprecedented. I’m surprised this isn’t all over the news to be honest. Why aren’t there any Cobra meetings on this? It’s such a massive threat to so many people. I just can’t understand the lack of action.

There was a cobra meeting. Bozo missed it because he was hosting a party at Chequers

I read on Sky News today that January's energy bill will average £500 just for the one month.

I'm a low to average earner with one dd and no mortgage and I wouldn't be able to pay £500 a month. What on earth are people on low incomes going to do - esp re standing charge . People will freeze.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 27/07/2022 21:31

I don’t really understand the bill predictions. I’m on a fixed rate right now, but my energy usage in May was £69 and June was £63, that’s for gas and electric in a 4 bed home…?!

Outoutoutshout · 27/07/2022 21:31

I genuinely have no idea how people are paying so much. My direct debit is £85 a month and I'm well in credit. I use about £40 a month total (gas and elec) even with the price hikes. My house is relatively small but is old and drafty. Unless people are living in mansions with families of 15 people I honestly don't know how you can use hundreds of pounds of fuel a month.

cakeorwine · 27/07/2022 21:31

Where are the ads on TV with ideas on how to save energy?

Take shorter showers
Reduce bath times
Wrap up with a blanket
Insulate your home - there are loads of ways to do this

This is something that is going to be a national crisis

People need to stop moaning on twitter/fb an take it to the streets!!

we can just about manage the rises in October but we would be screwed if they rise any further!

cakeorwine · 27/07/2022 21:34

The UK average use is about 12,000 KWH gas and 2900 KWH electricity

That gives a price level of £1971 at the moment - potentially going to £3850

I genuinely don't understand how your bill is so small.

Regardless. You can't compare unless you post your actual usage per month and then what your price per unit is.

I've nearly halved my usage from July last year (even got a 'congratulations your usage is down' letter!) and yet my bill has doubled. £200 a month. That's zero heating. That's literally just hot showers, hot water, lights, TV, hairdryer etc. Hardly using loads of energy.

How much energy in KWH do you use?
