To have pretended not to notice the shaved dog?

PIL are extremely attention seeking. They believe they are practically celebrities in their local area but the truth is they’re largely unliked. I have had many comments along the lines of “poor you, having to put up with those two as in laws” etc

One thing FIL loves to do is get his long haired border collie completely shaved twice a year. He makes out he does it for the dog’s comfort but it’s clearly for attention as he suddenly walks the dog more after it has being shaved and practically invites comments on it. The dog looks ridiculous.

The first time I saw the dog shaved I was horrified and asked what had happened (assumed dog had been shaved by a vet or something). He was grinning from ear to ear and said it was dog’s summer outfit.

The second time I told him border collies are not meant to be shaved. He (again grinning and loving the attention) said “it’s my dog, I’ll do what I want with my dog.” Fair enough. Around this time other people were asking me what on earth he’d done to his dog. I suggested they not ask him about it as he was looking for attention, they agreed with me.

A few weeks ago I popped in and dog was totally shaved again. I patted her on the head and didn’t mention it. FIL then said “have you noticed anything different?” I said “no, what?” And he grinned and pointed to the dog. I looked at the dog and said “no, I don’t see anything different”. He said “how can you not see it! She’s got her summer outfit on!” I replied “oh right, no I never noticed” and changed the subject. He went in a right mood over it and is still bringing it up now saying stuff like “toilet won’t notice our new sofa, she doesn’t notice stuff” etc

Someone in shop came to me laughing asking how I’d managed to upset FIL as apparently he’s been in there fuming about me.

DH is now saying “can’t you just play along and tell him the dog looks great, or stupid or anything just to show him you noticed, just to keep the peace?”

AIBU to carry on not noticing?? The bloke drives me insane.

Please carry on ignoring the fuckwit.

Imthedamnfoolwhoshothim · 22/07/2022 12:25

I would thrive off this :D ask your DH why his father is such a dick and why can't he change?

BlanketsBanned · 22/07/2022 12:28

Why doesnt your dh or mil tell this idiot to stop behaving like a twat. The poor dog doesn't need a shave, is twatface doing it or a groomer. Does he put sunscreen on the dog.

ditavonteesed · 22/07/2022 12:34

I was really worried this might be about me, I have clipped my own dog, he looks a right tit, however he doesn't care and he's not so hot. In my defence he has really bad arthritis and I would worry a groomer might hurt him as he can't stand for long.

Soubriquet · 22/07/2022 12:36

Oh you did the perfect response and I would run with it. Good for you

Scianel · 22/07/2022 12:37

He's actually a cruel cunt. But that's probably no surprise.

Brilliant 🤣 please keep up the ignoring!

Onlyhuman123 · 22/07/2022 12:39

Poor dog. I'm no expert on dogs but is it necessary for a dog to be completely shaved; for their health, I mean? (not for making life easier for the owner or gaining attention from the public) I would have had the same reaction to FIL OP. I'd tell DH to jog on and not 'tell me what to do, thank you very much'. If this had been my FIL and his dog and I knew that shaving the dog completely meant the dog was uncomfortable I wouldn't hesitate to call the RSPCA tbh. Can't bear animal cruelty.

blackgreywhite · 22/07/2022 12:41

He's a fucking simpleton and someone needs to take that dog off him as he obviously doesn't have the ritz to be able to look after it properly.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/07/2022 12:41

How is your DH normal with parents like that??

They sound extremely annoying but also great entertainment value. Please tell us more about them! (And be prepared for this to be picked up by the papers. Although I guess your PIL would love that.)

Scianel · 22/07/2022 12:42

I'm no expert on dogs but is it necessary for a dog to be completely shaved; for their health, I mean?

For some coat types it's a disaster, they never grow back correctly. Dog's coats often regulate their temperature in both cold and hot weather.

blackgreywhite · 22/07/2022 12:42

Wits not ritz!

GayParis · 22/07/2022 12:42

That's absolutely cruel. Does he actually realise what he's doing to the poor bloody dogs coat? She won't be able to regulate her temperature amongst other things.

Remind him he's a cruel cunt. What a dick ffs.

WinterMusings · 22/07/2022 12:52

is he doing it himself or a groomer?

if it's a groomer I'd be asking what the fuck they were doing!! Explain why it shouldn't be done & telling them to up their game as they clearly have no fucking idea what they're doing & if I hear of them doing any other dangerous grooming I'd be reporting them. Sadly any stupid twat can set up as a groomer.

Either way I'd be telling FIL that if I ever seen he's done/had it done again I'd be reporting him for animal abuse.

if he wants to stand out HE can shave his head, wear a pink wig or whatever the duck he likes! But animal abuse will be reported!

MinorWomensWhiplash1 · 22/07/2022 12:57

I’d be reporting that, he sounds like an absolute psychopath.

vivainsomnia · 22/07/2022 12:58

Your behaviour is very childish. I assume by 'shaved', you mean a 2 cut or so, not showing skin.

I agree that it is his dog and with the temperature we had, the dog might indeed be much happier. Why assuming he is doing it for attention?

It's your right not to agree with it but pretending you didn't see a difference is very petty.

CounsellorTroi · 22/07/2022 13:02

Do you mean the dog is actually bald? If so he's a cruel bastard.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 22/07/2022 13:04

Animal cruelty. Shouldnt shave coats as they regulate temperature. Report him.

Bunty55 · 22/07/2022 13:05

So you ignore the blatant obvious and endorse his handiwork on the poor dog ? What a pair you are ! You are no better than him. A good match OP, As they say 'You won't spoil another couple'

Tinkerblonde1 · 22/07/2022 13:05

Can the RSPCA have a wotd this is abuse. I would be making a big thing over the animal abuse and tell everyone.

kimfox · 22/07/2022 13:06

I can't even read the comments - Border Collies should not be shaved - I don't care what else this bloke does but that is unbelievably selfish / stupid / ignorant. Next time say "yes, I have noticed that perhaps you have mistaken your collie for a cockapoo". As to his general twattishness, I kind of think it's a case of "smile and wave" or "avoid, avoid avoid".

WireSkills · 22/07/2022 13:08

Definitely carry on ignoring his attention seeking twattishness. You're providing the rest of the town with a great source of amusement and you will no doubt be hailed as a local hero before the weekend is over. Crack on!

Poor dog though...

CallmeMrsPricklepants · 22/07/2022 13:09

Is it clipped or shaved bald? I get my spaniel clipped as otherwise we have a summer of grass seeds

Scianel · 22/07/2022 12:37

I'd probably report him to the RSPCA. You never know, they might prosecute him for animal cruelty. Probably not, but it's worth a try.

AgathaX · 22/07/2022 13:16

I looked at the dog and said “no, I don’t see anything different”. He said “how can you not see it! She’s got her summer outfit on!”

You should follow this up with "but you do this twice a year so it isn't different any more" - might make him stop it.

Is he shaving it down to the skin, or is the dog left with a very short layer of fur? I hope he's protecting the dog from sunburn if it's down to the skin. Cruel twat.
