To have pretended not to notice the shaved dog?

PIL are extremely attention seeking. They believe they are practically celebrities in their local area but the truth is they’re largely unliked. I have had many comments along the lines of “poor you, having to put up with those two as in laws” etc

One thing FIL loves to do is get his long haired border collie completely shaved twice a year. He makes out he does it for the dog’s comfort but it’s clearly for attention as he suddenly walks the dog more after it has being shaved and practically invites comments on it. The dog looks ridiculous.

The first time I saw the dog shaved I was horrified and asked what had happened (assumed dog had been shaved by a vet or something). He was grinning from ear to ear and said it was dog’s summer outfit.

The second time I told him border collies are not meant to be shaved. He (again grinning and loving the attention) said “it’s my dog, I’ll do what I want with my dog.” Fair enough. Around this time other people were asking me what on earth he’d done to his dog. I suggested they not ask him about it as he was looking for attention, they agreed with me.

A few weeks ago I popped in and dog was totally shaved again. I patted her on the head and didn’t mention it. FIL then said “have you noticed anything different?” I said “no, what?” And he grinned and pointed to the dog. I looked at the dog and said “no, I don’t see anything different”. He said “how can you not see it! She’s got her summer outfit on!” I replied “oh right, no I never noticed” and changed the subject. He went in a right mood over it and is still bringing it up now saying stuff like “toilet won’t notice our new sofa, she doesn’t notice stuff” etc

Someone in shop came to me laughing asking how I’d managed to upset FIL as apparently he’s been in there fuming about me.

DH is now saying “can’t you just play along and tell him the dog looks great, or stupid or anything just to show him you noticed, just to keep the peace?”

AIBU to carry on not noticing?? The bloke drives me insane.

He's actually a cruel cunt. But that's probably no surprise.

babybunny123 · 22/07/2022 13:24

He is an absolute tosser but so is the person who shaves the dog !!!

caringcarer · 22/07/2022 13:25

I'd report to RSPCA. See what they thought. It is cruel and not normal to shave a collie. Get it clipped yes but not no hair at all.

Yeah he won’t care. OP has already told him it’s not good for the dog and he carried on because he finds it amusing and gets attention for it

Americano75 · 22/07/2022 13:41

That's top shithousery and I heartily approve.

But yeah, report the prick to the RSPCA.

TheOrigRights · 22/07/2022 13:47

I think you should report him. He's being abusive towards his dog and very much risking its health.

Your behaviour is very childish. I assume by 'shaved', you mean a 2 cut or so, not showing skin.

I agree that it is his dog and with the temperature we had, the dog might indeed be much happier. Why assuming he is doing it for attention?

It's your right not to agree with it but pretending you didn't see a difference is very petty.

As has been pointed out a number of times in the thread, you're not supposed to shave border collies at all.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/07/2022 13:49

Also, OK is not being childish or petty. She is refusing to give him the attention he clearly wants, in the hope that he will stop doing it.

girlmom21 · 22/07/2022 13:52

If your husband wants you to acknowledge it, say "oh yeah you've been a nasty bastard to the poor dog again".

Cherrysoup · 22/07/2022 13:53

Why is your Dh trying to make you give him approval for his arsehole behaviour?

MissingGrandstand · 22/07/2022 13:53

Completely agree with @Americano75 , also excellent use of the word shithousery, my fave comment of the day!

You can't beat a bit of shithousery!

And the way they are going about it is childish. The best way is to totally ignore it. Just answer 'yes, I've noticed', end of.

Something doesn't ring right anyway. It takes almost 4 years for a collie coat to grow back fully, so I doubt the dog is shaved to the skin twice a year. They can however be groomed as long as the two layers remain.

Acheyknees · 22/07/2022 13:59

I have an arsehole attention seeker for a FIL. We arranged to meet up at a lovely pub with SIL, BIL their kids and PIL. FIL turns up wearing a gandalf false beard. Absolutely no one commented on it.

BellePeppa · 22/07/2022 14:04

God he sounds pathetic. Good for you to not pander to him. (Maybe check with a vet that it’s ok to shave the dog?🤷‍♀️)

noirchatsdeux · 22/07/2022 14:04

I have a 'FIL' (not actually married, 13 year relationship) who is a fuckwit as well.

Years ago I had a household emergency and the cats went to stay with my partner (we live in different cities due to his work). My two are indoor cats, have been all their lives and are fine with it...my previous indoor cat lived happily to 19. During the 3 months they were staying with partner, unknown to him, while he was at work his idiot father was going around to his place, and letting them outside... it ended up with one of them going missing for hours....luckily the cat was found.

When I found out I went absolutely berserk. FIL had the nerve to act as if he was doing us a favour by going out to look for the cat! I cut all contact and it's now 8 years since I've had anything to do with the racist, homophobic brexit voting arsehole.

Keep up the good work!

oakleaffy · 22/07/2022 14:06

The two Working Farm Border Collies I know have kept their full coats on and thermoregulate just fine. They are up early when it is cooler, and seek out shade when it's hot.
To shave a BC that is an indoor pet seems nuts.
Can't imagine how strange it must look.

Hmm... I will reserve judgement for now and see whether the OP comes back. The way it's worded suggests the 'shaving' is pretty extreme, so unlikely that both layers are intact, but it's possible we've just fallen for a shaggy dog story (BOOM BOOM).

LadyCatStark · 22/07/2022 14:26

Bunty55 · 22/07/2022 13:05

So you ignore the blatant obvious and endorse his handiwork on the poor dog ? What a pair you are ! You are no better than him. A good match OP, As they say 'You won't spoil another couple'

Have you actually read the thread??

Ignoring him is the best thing you can do in this case in the hope that next time he won’t bother!

diddl · 22/07/2022 14:27

Husband sounds almost as twatty as FIL.

He should be incensed at a dog being treated like this not asking Op to play along as if it's a joke.

Or perhaps it is-on us!

Pibble · 22/07/2022 14:47

I now have "shaved border collie" in my search history...

Yanbu, they sounds totally nuts.

GCMM · 22/07/2022 14:49

Is dog shaving a thing now? I saw a woman sitting on bench by the sea one evening last week, her medium sized dog (don't know what breed) was lying across her lap and she was shaving it with some electric clippers/shaver.

Some dogs do need shaving. Such as poodle and poodle crosses.

Any dog that has a fur that doesn’t shed needs shaving at least once a year.

Usually it’s just to get rid of the ends. The leave the coat on but shorter. If the coat is in a matted condition, they may need to shave down to the skin.
