How do I get my new 'friend'out of my house

I was chilling with baby when I heard a big commotion in the dining room blinds, I thought a bird or cat was stuck in there, but it's a huge dragonfly! Honestly the pic doesn't do it justice, it's massive.

How do I get this out bearing in mind my fear of insects, my legs have gone like jelly. I can't get too close, it was flying so erratically earlier I'm worried it's going to land on my head or get caught in my hair or something!

Wow, he's a big lad

Do you have a spider catcher you've forgotten about in the shed by any chance?

If not, not much help now but get one, it changed my life

Winterfellismyhome · 19/07/2022 14:57

Sorry, thats his house now

alonglongshot · 19/07/2022 14:58

It will probably settle down now it's found a cool spot.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/07/2022 14:58

We had one that big , huge aren't they? Ds scooped it up with a cake tin 🤣

AryaStarkWolf · 19/07/2022 15:00

Oh those are literally the only creepy crawly I actually like, they look like helicopters

NotKatherineRyan · 19/07/2022 15:00

The only logical way out of this is to gather any loved ones and sentimental belongings, then go find yourself somewhere else to live.

SummerClean · 19/07/2022 15:00

Ohhh we do! Just need to figure out where it is, unfortunately I think it's on the unit right next to that thing. I don't trust it to stay put as I get close arghhh. Also it seems so strong I wonder if it would manage to escape the spider catcher?

Stand on a chair or ladder and put a glass over it. Slide a piece of paper in to cover the glass opening and set it free outside in the shade.

AmyDudley · 19/07/2022 15:02

Do you have a net or possibly a seive you could catch him in then usher him out side? he won't hurt you, he's pretty cool actually. Do you have a neighbour who doesn't mind insects who would come and catch him for you (I am frequently requested to remove spiders and the like for my neighbour as they don't bother me)

🤣🤣

OP
Can you open the windows and pull up the blind and gently encourage to fly back out?
Disturb it with a broom back out to the door
Wait untill it looks like it will settle
if away from the window disturb it again
Good luck!

WinterMusings · 19/07/2022 15:02

I've never seen one that big!!

(carry on films of the 60's/70's)

AmyDudley · 19/07/2022 15:02

I draw the line at wasps though as I am allergic to them.

GoSomewhereThatDoes · 19/07/2022 15:03

He’s beautiful! He’s probably tried to find some shade.

He looks too big to get a pint glass over him without damaging his wings, so have you got a vase or some Tupperware that you can slide a piece of card over?

If not, open your windows wide so he can fly out if he takes off, and see if you can get him to crawl onto a feather duster, which you can then put out of the window.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 19/07/2022 15:03

Friendly neighbour?

GoSomewhereThatDoes · 19/07/2022 15:05

Make sure you close the door of the room he’s in or he’ll be gone and you won’t find him again until 3am when he’s crawling up your leg.

saveforthat · 19/07/2022 15:05

Its beautiful and it won't hurt you. Please be careful if you shoo it out. I would just open the windows as wide as you can and hope it flies out.

SummerClean · 19/07/2022 15:05

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor damn it DS is 10 months, I fear he won't be much help yet.

@NotKatherineRyan thought so!

@AryaStarkWolf I also don't mind dragonflies usually, that was back when I didn't realise they could be this big!

I'm glad people agree it's big, I didn't know if it was overreacting :D.

I might just keep the doors shut and wait for DH, and only go in there like a ninja for the bare necessities such as water!

Move house.
Or nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

Wafflesnsniffles · 19/07/2022 15:10

Do you have perchance a pond dipping net? That would be ideal. Ive been meaning to get one for ages for reasons just like this. "friend" eviction!

SummerClean · 19/07/2022 15:11

@GoSomewhereThatDoes my thought exactly
