How do I get my new 'friend'out of my house

SummerClean · 19/07/2022 14:54

I was chilling with baby when I heard a big commotion in the dining room blinds, I thought a bird or cat was stuck in there, but it's a huge dragonfly! Honestly the pic doesn't do it justice, it's massive.

How do I get this out bearing in mind my fear of insects, my legs have gone like jelly. I can't get too close, it was flying so erratically earlier I'm worried it's going to land on my head or get caught in my hair or something!

I use carrier bags trao em and let em go

BiddyPop · 19/07/2022 15:24

They only live for a day so while it's his house today, it will be back to being yours tomorrow.

hoorayandupsherises · 19/07/2022 15:18

That is dinosaur sized.

You're going to have to LTB.

Right?? 😳

OP, where do you live, Jurrasic Park?

The only logical way out of this is to gather any loved ones and sentimental belongings, then go find yourself somewhere else to live.

Hilarious, you made me snort my cuppa tea out of my nose 😂

Didactylos · 19/07/2022 15:31

No, its mayflies that live only for one day
The larger dragonflies can live several months in their adult form
And that is LARGE
So I would be looking for alternative accommodation for the next year at least

SummerClean · 19/07/2022 15:31

Huge right?

@BiddyPop do they actually only live for a day? I feel bad for him if so. If he has chosen my house for his final moments perhaps I should just let him.

I've just popped back downstairs and it's still there. It's not moving at all.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 19/07/2022 15:32

You'll know he's gone when you hear him close the front door behind him 😱

Tiani4 · 19/07/2022 15:33

Sheesh that's a large insect I can't even work out what it is. I'd use a large plastic cup or glass and piece of cardboard (cut up a cereal box!) and rescue it to outside that way ...!

Winterfellismyhome · 19/07/2022 14:57

Sorry, thats his house now

Sierra1961 · 19/07/2022 15:35

Wow. That’s really something. I really feel for you, I’d honestly be petrified 🫣 it’s horrible!!!
If I were you, I’d honestly find a kind neighbour and ask them to help me!

@ForTheLoveOfSleep pretty accurate based on its loud entry

OP, I’m really sorry to have to tell you…I think you are going to have to find a new place to live. That monster isn’t going anywhere

You feel bad for Him??? It's a girl and that big girl is going to pop some big babies out very shortly, possibly tonight or tomorrow and that will be your family complete😂.I heard once they get in you'll never get them out

It's a monstress

Herejustforthisone · 19/07/2022 15:41

He’s magnificent. I hope you manage to help him escape. They don’t get long to live as dragonflies. He won’t enjoy spending it inside your house.

Hutchy16 · 19/07/2022 15:41

GoSomewhereThatDoes · 19/07/2022 15:05

Make sure you close the door of the room he’s in or he’ll be gone and you won’t find him again until 3am when he’s crawling up your leg.

Lol…and you’ve given OP nightmares for the next few weeks

Herejustforthisone · 19/07/2022 15:42

I don’t understand why people find creatures like this ‘horrible’. They’re exquisite.

SummerClean · 19/07/2022 15:42

I'd love to ask a neighbour but there are only elderly ladies near me :(

3 hours until DH comes home... 2h59... 2h58...

We get loads since we have a large lake nearby. Put your arm out with your fingers outstretched. Quite often they will land on your hand and you can just take them out.

@WinterMusings Ooh Matron! (Shows her age)

Op, do you know any Australians, they know how to do this stuff, wish i hadn't looked, making me feel a bit queasy

I was thinking this too. I would be trying to get close up pictures of it before tenderly scooping it up and waving it on its way. I am the family insect catcher though.

This is the one method I shall not try 😂

@Herejustforthisone I do actually appreciate its pretty amazing. I would admire it if it was outside but when it's in my house... makes me shudder

Close the door and do not open it for two days, he will have died of old age by then, it is not unkind, he is not going to be eaten by a bird, it is a peaceful death…. Unless he is really desperate to mate or, even worse, is a “she” finding where to lay her eggs.
