How do I get my new 'friend'out of my house

I was chilling with baby when I heard a big commotion in the dining room blinds, I thought a bird or cat was stuck in there, but it's a huge dragonfly! Honestly the pic doesn't do it justice, it's massive.

How do I get this out bearing in mind my fear of insects, my legs have gone like jelly. I can't get too close, it was flying so erratically earlier I'm worried it's going to land on my head or get caught in my hair or something!

Aww, please don't kill it OP (although I don't think you would anyway).

If it dies a natural death though ... well, add some carbs of your choosing and that's dinner sorted for the foreseeable future. It could be like the MN chicken!

What the hell is going on with the enormo-bugs just now?! For solidarity, I was stalked by the biggest, hairiest moth last night. I heard the whirring wings and I was like "nooooooooooo" 😥😥😥. I have 6 dogs, who all pretended not to see it, and DH slept all through the incident, even while the damn thing was trying to carry me back to its people!

I went to get a sheet of paper for it to land on so I could get it back outside, and when I came back in to the room, I kid you not, it was actually sitting in my space on the settee 😂. It did very obligingly hop on to the paper though, and was launched gently released outside.

Be brave OP, be brave 💐

OMG, I’m crying! 🤣🤣🤣. This thread has made my day! I’m hot, and bored and hungry. I needed a smile!

OP, I think they hunt mozzies and what not. By making baskets out of their legs and hooking them out if the sky. I’d be building her a nest. But if you leave the blinds open, she’ll head out towards the light when she’s ready.

Failing that, get mashing up the triceratops.

in the afternoons when it’s super- hot here, the bumble bees are coming into our hall to cool off, poor girls. I’m putting out water for them.

Yup, like that but bigger (it was like a bear on a hang glider), and mine had a Scottish accent 😂

Heistonabike · 19/07/2022 18:21

They are beautiful insects, but only outside and at least 5 metres away!

Something similar flew into my house in Greece years ago. I was frying chicken at the time and completely freaked and ran out of the flat, slamming the door behind me. I was completely locked out, no phone and didn't speak Greek. To prevent the entire building from burning down I went downstairs and switched off the electricity to the entire building. This prompted every other resident in the building to come downstairs to see why the power had gone out. When ex dp finally came home he found me guarding the breaker switches while sobbing and shouting "KATSERIDA!" (cockroach) over and over again at a mob of angry Greeks.

Jellywobblescobbles · 19/07/2022 18:23

Hahahaha cockroach story is brilliant! 😂

I'd open any windows or exterior doors in the room as wide as possible, then approach it with a broom, mop, or anything else with a long handle. You don't have to get as close that way. It might take a few tries to get it to find the exit. Otherwise, just leave the room and wait. They really won't do any harm, though.

😂open the door and windows wide? So her friends will come and find her and decide oh what nice accommodation and maybe we should stay

Hollywolly1 · 19/07/2022 18:35

A giant moth hit me Square in the face this morning in my kitchen in Broad day light, terrified me he came at me at ferocious speed was like getting hit by a helicopter

SummerClean · 19/07/2022 19:40

@Heistonabike that is hilarious, just the kind of crazy overreaction I would have, and then making things worse trying to fix it. Brilliant!

So glad I posted this thread, the responses have made my day, I needed cheering up!

I really liked dragonflies until someone kindly informed me that they bite. Now I only like them far away 🙁 Glad she's gone of her own accord OP 👍

BitchyLittleSpinster · 19/07/2022 20:15

Katserida means cockroach in Greek? I’m sure there was an ANTM contestant with that name.

Summerclean.
I'm an elderly lady, I'd get him for you. Lots of ladies my age wouldn't be scared of it. 🤣

Oh yes I bet they'd be less scared than me! I'd feel too bad bothering them though!

We had one earlier, DH also mistook it for a cat. Happily it left quite quickly of its own accord, before we had to tell DD, who makes us remove dead moths from her bath, that we had a bug the size of a sparrow in the kitchen.

Sorry, thats his house now

10000% this.

Blowthemandown · 19/07/2022 23:06

Turn the lights off, open light in hall, open door, he should head for the light. If you have outside lights switch them on; this will encourage him to fly out.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 19/07/2022 23:53

I had one like that fly in through the car window last summer - was buzzing all over the place at first but then settled on the passenger seat! Luckily I drive a convertible and was driving slowly in town so managed to drop the roof at the next set of lights and it buggered off!
Could have been very dangerous under other circumstances!

Hmm1234 · 20/07/2022 18:25

Hoover it! Highest suction I’m like this even at night when I notice small bugs coming in the house even though I have fly screens on the open windows urghhh

bigmumsymcgraw · 20/07/2022 18:44

OMG Thats like something you see in a zoo insect enclosure Im scared for you good luck

LoisLane66 · 20/07/2022 23:43

Get an old cloth or tea-towel and scoop it up then take it outside and let it go.

Why can't we thumbs up comments? 😂

VeniVidiWeeWee · 21/07/2022 02:04

The only logical way out of this is to gather any loved ones and sentimental belongings, then go find yourself somewhere else to live.

😂😂😂

user1478939671 · 21/07/2022 02:08

Not being funny but I just watched Jurassic Park and this was on it.

Kerrrmieee · 21/07/2022 02:14

Ohhh I had one in once, was huge and beautiful, but dive bombingly terrifying.

My cat ate it 😕

Indoctro · 21/07/2022 02:19

I wouldn't handle it, large dragonfly's can bite and it's painful.

Smaller ones although will bite often won't break the skin.

Also it's crane flys who only live for 24 hours (daddy long legs)

Some dragon flys can live for 6/7 years.
