To only start snack eating once movie starts?

So, if you are sitting down to watch a movie/ programme and you have your snacks ready, do you wait until it's actually started, everyone has got themselves sorted (if at home) or do you start eating at any time?

If at a cinema, do you start your popcorn in the trailers or wait for the main event?

This is just me thinking about this as dd who I hadn't discussed this with, said to me, "Eating snacks with the film is the best!" I tend to agree with her.

YABU - eat whenever you want
YANBU - eat when the main film/ programme starts

I start before the film, because usually during it I forget. If I don't start before I won't eat anything, although that wouldn't be a bad thing really.

HelloHeathcliffeItsMe · 18/07/2022 11:08

I always have to wait. Growing up we weren't allowed to eat in front of the television so at age 31 it still feels like a huge illicit treat 🤣

Tisyphone · 18/07/2022 11:09

I never eat in the cinema. I like gloomy art house movies with long silences and the chomping would drive me mad, whether it was mine or someone else’s.

At home, I like an Aperol spritz watching a film, but not much of a snacker.

yellowsmileyface · 18/07/2022 11:09

I always wait until the start of the film to eat, both at home and cinema.

It's something I've always been very particular about! Even as a little kid I'd insist that my family couldn't eat any of the popcorn until the movie started.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 18/07/2022 11:10

At home probably during as it doesn't take long before we're ready to start. At cinema I'll be eating as soon as we sit down in seats even before trailers start 😂i can't hear the film over my own munching and cinema doesn't have subtitles so I get it out of the way before.

SunThroughTheCloudsAt6am · 18/07/2022 11:12

I say eat whenever you want.

Eldest is the snack police though, and even rations out what you can eat when during the movie as he likes to be sure there will be snacks throughout :D

mycatisannoying · 18/07/2022 11:14

If I'm at the cinema, I'll probably have cracked open the pick & mix before the trailers Grin
At home, I wait until the start of my film or programme. It's one of my pet hates when something goes awry and disturbs my perfect synchronicity.
I'm weird Grin

FrankLampardsBrokenHand · 18/07/2022 11:16

At the cinema you get a magnum in your little bag so we have that straight away. The rest waits.

At home any bags get opened before it starts.

Palmfrond · 18/07/2022 11:18

It’s dog eat dog in the palmfrond household. If there’s any snacks left after the first five minutes it’s because they’re some novelty snack impulse bought at the checkout of tkmaxx that turned out to be utterly disgusting.

GlumyGloomer · 18/07/2022 11:22

I gave up buying popcorn at the cinema after realising that I only ever ate the top cm during the trailers, and promptly forgot all about it once the film started. I argue snacks are entirely for the trailers, and if you want to snack during the movie then it isn't a very engaging film!

GoldenSpiral · 18/07/2022 11:23

My DH is very much in favour of waiting until the film starts. I like to eat my snacks just before as I want to focus on the film and not hear my own crunching.

rookiemere · 18/07/2022 11:23

Eat before otherwise the rustling and chewing impacts other cinema goers enjoyment.

TheFridayRabbit · 18/07/2022 11:25

This thread made me smile. My son is very particular about not starting snacks until the movie starts. Won’t snack during an ad break at home either 😝

hentheeighth · 18/07/2022 11:25

I wait until the film starts (do the same at home waiting for Netflix to load!) and DH thinks I am nuts. He eats his before he's even sat down!

Glad I have found my people 😁

isitanywonderthat · 18/07/2022 11:26

If I have snacks I've usually chomped the lot before the film starts, but usually I just have a drink from Costa rather than snacks.

Our odeon does a meal deal thing so sometimes we have that instead of dinner and I have nachos, mozarella dippers and a peroni, have to eat it while it's hot so again gone before the movie starts usually.

SunshineAndFizz · 18/07/2022 11:27

Start as soon as I sit down (cinema or home). Snacks usually gone before movie starts Grin

This. Rustling of popcorn/packets of sweets during trailers, I don’t care. Rustling during the film gives me the rage

I did actually ask the person next to me when his popcorn was going to be finished during a film once as it was like Mary Poppins bag - he never quite seemed to get to the bottom of it and made so much noise. To be fair he apologised and didn’t eat anymore. And it was about half way through the film so I put up with it long enough

mydogisthebest · 18/07/2022 11:33

I don't eat in the cinema. I go to watch the film not eat. I hate the noise of people eating in cinemas to be honest

maddiemookins16mum · 18/07/2022 11:34

I’m halfway through a share pack of Aero balls before the trailers have started!

Hugasauras · 18/07/2022 11:38

Cinema popcorn is my fave thing about going. I get a big old bucket and start the minute I sit down and don't stop till it's all gone Grin

DahliaMacNamara · 18/07/2022 11:40

I don't like to eat rustly food in the cinema. It feels rude even to me, and I am a complete barbarian. But at home, if I have a drink, the crisps have to come out. DH will have scoffed his in the time it takes to select the film and get through the opening titles. This is clearly wrongheaded behaviour, especially it he decides my snacks are fair game once the film's on.

ihavespoken · 18/07/2022 11:40

I have always eaten all mine before the trailers have been on Grin but I have voted YANBU as I wish I had your willpower! In theory I would like to save the snacks for the main event but in practice I am a pig

girlfriend44 · 18/07/2022 11:41

Why do you need to eat at tge cinema at all.

TheFridayRabbit · 18/07/2022 11:44

Who said anything about “need”?

ihavespoken · 18/07/2022 11:44

Oh on reading the other replies I have realised I can reframe my greedy nature as consideration for other cinema-goers - obviously I am rushing to get the snacks finished so my crunching doesn't upset others' viewing pleasure Halo

I am agog at those who FORGET THE SNACKS ARE THERE!!! if they don't eat them immediately Shock
